Impurity patterns of rare earth elements (REEs) are expected to remain invariable when the materials undergo industrial processes owing to the similarity in their chemical properties to each other. Therefore, the REE patterns in a uranium material can be used to make conclusions about the origin of uranium. ICP-MS has been widely applied to the REE measurements because highly sensitive and multi-element measurement is available. In this study, a solid sample introduction technique with laser ablation (LA) has been applied to minimize the preparation procedure of the ICP-MS measurement for obtaining the REE patterns. Cation-exchange resin particle was employed as a substrate to preconcentrate the REEs on solid phase. The count ratios of the REEs in the REE-adsorbed resin particles obtained by the LA-ICP-MS give close agreement with the concentration ratios of the REEs in the elemental ratios in the initial REE solution.
