Prompt -ray analysis and time of flight elemental analysis uses the energy of the rays and the energy of neutron resonances, respectively. In both analyses, a sample is irradiated with neutrons and rays are detected. Thus, these methods are similar and could be replaced by a single measurement. However, these methods have never been applied simultaneously before. We have first developed a novel technique which combines these methods by using an intense pulsed neutron beam. It allows us to obtain the results from both methods at the same time. Moreover, significant synergy has been achieved. Specifically, it will be used to quantify elemental concentrations in the sample that neither of these methods can be applied. Here, we demonstrate how it can be used to extract reliable information from unresolved peaks in the spectra.

The neutron-capture cross-section measurements by the time-of flight method were performed using an apparatus called "Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI)" installed at the neutron Beam Line No.4 of the Materials and Life science experimental Facility (MLF) in the J-PARC. The neutron-capture cross sections of Pd and Pd have been measured in the neutron energy range from thermal to 300 eV. Some new information was obtained for resonances of these Pd nuclei.

A neutron time-of-flight method was adopted for the measurements with a 4 Ge spectrometer installed at the Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI) in the J-PARC Material and Life science experimental Facility (MLF). The -ray pulse-height spectra corresponding to the 27-eV resonance of Se and the 113-, 212-, 291-, 342-, 690- and 864-eV resonances of Se were obtained by gating on the TOF regions, respectively. The relative intensities of those primary transitions were derived and compared with the previous experimental data. For the 27-eV resonance of Se, a strong primary transition to the 293-keV state was observed. As for Se, the quite differences of the decay pattern were found between the resonances.

The cross section was obtained relative to that of the B reaction. The absolute value of the cross section was deduced by normalizing the relative cross section to the JENDL-4.0 evaluation at the first resonance. The thermal cross section was obtained to be (176.74.7)b. The Maxwellian-averaged cross section for = 25.3 meV was derived as (174.65.1)b by referring the cross section from JENDL-4.0 below 10 meV. These results lead to the Westcott's -factor of 0.9880.010.

The 315 -rays have been placed in the Ni level scheme of which 272 placements are new. We have determined excitation energies with 0.2-0.8 keV error and branching ratios of 62 bound levels in Ni, including 30 new levels. The Q-value of the Ni (n,) Ni reaction amounts to 6837.75 (18) keV. A large-scale shell-model calculation has been performed and the energies of the low-lying Ni states are successfully reproduced. A mean-field statistical model calculation has been also made by using a self-consistent interaction between the Hartree-Fock + BCS method and the statistical calculation. The calculation result is consistent with the experimental level density of Ni.

Therefore, this method can improve the signal-to-noise ratio, and provide a rapid screening method of toxic elements. We developed a neutron beam line and a detector system for MPGA, which consists of eight Clover Ge detectors, was constructed at the cold neutron guide C2-3-2 of JRR-3. Protein is an important nutrient in foods. The classical total protein analysis method is the Kjeldahl technique, which is time-consuming and inconvenient. As a convenient method to quantify total protein content in biological samples, the feasibility of application of MPGA to the quantification was studied. The results obtained with reference materials are in good agreement with the certified value. MPGA provides a tool for the rapid and non-destructive quantification of total protein content.
