A High energy component of the intense laser-accelerated proton beams detected by stacked CR-39

A precise measurement has been made utilizing a stacked CR-39 detectors unit for laser accelerated high intensity protons. The proton beams are derived from a thin polyimide target exposed to an high intense Ti:sapphire laser 8 J energy and 40 fs duration. The sample sets, stacked radiochromic film and CR-39 detectors covered with 13 $$mu$$m aluminum filter, are irradiated under vacuum condition. By analyzing the etch pits on the last layer of CR-39 which recorded etchable tracks, the proton energy in high energy region is evaluate more precisely than in the past. The residual ranges for each particle in the last layer has been obtained from etch pit growth curves with multi-stepetching technique. The maximum energy of proton is 14.39$$pm$$0.05 MeV. This method allows us to measure the maximum energy of proton precisely, which is obtained up to the hundredth place in unit of MeV in the laser-driven particle acceleration experiment.

CR-39 solid state nuclear track detector, which was developed for optical lens, has been applied for various field such as radon surveys, measurement of galactic cosmic ray, cell irradiation experiment and so on. The CR-39 detectors have the great advantages of being insensitive to high energy photons and electrons and capable of detecting only ions in the mixed fields such as laser driven relativistic plasmas. Though there are some analytical methods of CR-39 to diagnose ion beam, unfortunately, only few researchers in the field of plasma know the methods. This article looks at how to use CR-39 detectors and introduce the accomplishment of the joint study JAEA and Kobe Univ. for application of CR-39 detectors to ion beam diagnosis.

EARLY FLOWERING 3 (ELF3) is a circadian clock protein with a major role in maintaining circadian rhythms in plants. In this work, ${it elf3-101}$ was mutagenized by EMS in plants of the Lansberg ${it erecta}$ background to isolate suppressors of ${it elf3}$ and to understand the molecular mechanisms of flowering time controlled by ELF3. Two suppressors, ${it sel106}$ obtained from this screen and ${it sel5}$ from a precious study, were chosen for further analysis. Genetic mapping, gene expression analysis, and sequencing identified ${it sel106}$ and ${it sel5}$ as new alleles of ${it gi}$ and ${it fca}$, respectively. Genetic interactions between ${it elf3}$ and ${it gi}$ and between ${it elf3}$ and ${it fca}$ in the control of the floral activator ${it FLOWERING LOCUS T}$ were also investigated. Six suppressor of ${it elf3}$ were classified at least into four subgroups based on the expression of such floral regulators as GI, CO, FT, SVP, and FLC, and on their flowering times under LL, LD, and SD. This classification scheme is useful for the characterization of unidentified suppressor mutations.

The Data Acquisition System of Beam Position Monitors (BPMs) in J-PARC Main Ring are consist of 186 Linux-based Data Processing Circuits (BPMCs) and 12 EPICS IOCs. They are important tool to see the COD and turn-by-turn beam positions. This report describes the process of the data reconstruction which include how the various calibration constants are applied.

A phase transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter was developed for the energy dispersive measurement of LX-ray photons emitted from transuranium elements. The phase transition temperature of the TES was designed to be 200 mK by using bilayer structure of Au of 120 nm thick and Ti of 50 nm thick. The Au layer of 5.0 $$mu$$m thick was deposited on the Au/Ti bilayer for absorption efficiency of 50% and counting rate of 100 counts per second in the detection of LX-ray photons with the energy from 10 to 20 keV. The TES microcalorimeter was operated for the detection of LX-ray photons emitted from $$^{241}$$Am, $$^{238}$$Pu and $$^{239}$$Pu sources. The decay time constant of 180 $$mu$$s of detection signal pulses allowed the TES microcalorimeter operating with the counting rate higher than 100 counts per second. The energy resolution was obtained to be 50 eV of FWHM value for a peak corresponding to $$^{237}$$Np L$$beta$$$$_{1}$$ X-ray of 17.75 keV.

J-PARC is a large scale facility of the proton accelerators for the multi-purpose of scientific researches in Japan. This facility consists of three accelerators and three experimental stations. Now, J-PARC is under construction, and LINAC is operated for one year, 3GeV synchrotron has just started the commissioning in this October the 1st. The completion of this facility will be next summer. The control system of accelerators established fundamental performance for the initial commissioning. The most important requirement to the control system of this facility is to minimize the activation of accelerator devices. In this paper, we show that the performances of each layer of this control system have been achieved in the initial stage.

In the laser-driven ion acceleration experiment, fast electrons and X-rays also generated and these particles could cause significant contaminants to the ion detectors an a background noise. In the present study, to minimize the noise signals, we have optimized thickness of ZnS(Ag) fluorescent screen, which is much sensitive for ions, through Monte Carlo particle transport code PHITS. And we have also evaluate the response of the fluorescent screen as a function of fluence using rf-accelerator.

PADC, poly(allyl diglycol carbonate), is well-known as CR-39 track detector and it performs the highest sensitivity for protons and heavy ions in track detectors. In order to diagnose ion beams precisely, we have to check environmental effect of irradiation for their sensitivity. Then, we have focused on the vacuum effect, which means that the storage of PADC in vacuum before and during irradiation decreases the track sensitivity. The vacuum effects had been studied on the case of protons and alpha-particles. In the present study, we have carried out quantitative evaluation of vacuum effect for carbon ion irradiation, and we have found the vacuum effect is also observed in the case of heavy ion irradiation.

CR-39 is one of the most reliable ion detector in mixed field with high energy electrons and X-rays. In order to diagnose the ion beams with CR-39 more precisely in the mixed field such as Laser-driven ion acceleration experiment, it is required to evaluate the response considered the irradiation environment such as the storage time in vacuum condition. Therefore, we have quantitatively evaluate the reduction rate of the detection sensitivity as a function of storage time in vacuum, which is called "vacuum effect". In the past study, the vacuum effect was reported only for protons and helium ion. In the present study, we have found the vacuum effect is also appear in case of heavy ions such as carbon ion.

In laser-driven ion acceleration experiments applying cluster-gas target, along with high energy ions, a significant amount of well-collimated high energy electrons with several hundreds of MeV are produced. Such fast electrons could produce high energy photons via bremsstrahlung processes. Furthermore, such photons could produce photo-neutrons in a series of ($$gamma$$,n) reactions. If CR-39 detectors, which can detect only ions and it is insensitive to high energy photons and electrons, is exposed to such photo-neutrons, it can record recoiled protons and other heavy ions generated by the nuclear reactions. In order to precisely diagnose only for laser accelerated ions, we have to keep the photo-neutron flux level as low as possible, because it could cause significant contaminant effects to the CR-39 as a background noise. In the present study, to minimize the flux of photo-neutrons, we have considered the geometry of the stacked CR-39 detector unit by using Monte Carlo simulation.
