Development of an areal density imaging for boron and other elements

We developed a method to obtain the areal density distribution of boron, which has a large neutron cross section, by means of an energy resolved neutron imaging. Commonly in a measurement of elements with very high neutron sensitivity, the quantitative measurement becomes more difficult with the amount of element due to the neutron self-shielding effect. To avoid this effect, an energy-resolved method using known cross section data was attempted, and a quantitative imaging of such elements was demonstrated at the MLF of J-PARC. This presentation introduces a measurement of melted simulated-fuel assemblies obtained in the research of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after the severe accident. Energy-dependent neutron transmission rates of the samples were measured by a neutron imaging detector, and were analyzed to obtained the areal density of boron at each position.

We provide detailed theoretical studies of quantities relevant to the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) and nucleus-electron scalar-pseudoscalar interactions in diatomic molecules containing superheavy lawrencium nuclei. The sensitivity to parity and time (or, equivalently, $$CP$$) reversal violating properties is studied for different neutral and ionic molecules. The effective electric fields in these systems are found to be about 3$$sim$$4 times larger than other known molecules on which eEDM experiments are being performed. Similarly, these superheavy molecules exhibit an enhancement of more than 3 times for $$CP$$-violating scalar-pseudoscalar nucleus-electron interactions. Our preliminary analysis using the Woods-Saxon nuclear model also demonstrates that these results are sensitive to the diffuse surface interactions inside the Lr nucleus.

In the decommissioning of the Fukushima-Daiichi (1F) Nuclear Power Plant, it is essential to understand characteristics of the melted core materials. The estimation of boride in the real debris is of great importance to develop safe debris removal plans. Hence, it is required to investigate the amount of boron in the melted core materials with nondestructive methods. Prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA) is one of the useful techniques to determine the amount of borides by means of the 478 keV prompt gamma-ray from neutron absorption reaction of boron. Moreover, it is well known that the width of the 478 keV gamma-ray peak is typically broadened due to the Doppler effect. The degree of the broadening is affected by coexisting materials, and can be recognized by the width of the prompt gamma-ray peak. As a feasibility study, the prompt gamma-ray from boride samples were measured using the ANNRI, NOBORU, and RADEN beamlines at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Complex (J-PARC).

Peak shape analysis was performed for the energy spectra of Doppler-broadened prompt $$gamma$$-rays generated by neutron capture reactions with various boride or boron samples. Significant differences were observed between nonmetallic and metallic borides. Minor differences between the peak shapes of prompt $$gamma$$-rays from zirconium- and ferro-borons were evaluated by a peak fitting method. The identification of zirconium- and ferro-borons and other types of borides was estimated.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Numerical simulation of self-priming phenomena in venturi scrubber by two-phase flow simulation code TPFIT

From the viewpoint of protecting containment and suppressing diffusion of the radioactive materials at severe accidents of nuclear power plant, it is important to install filtered venting devices to permit release of high pressure pollutant gas to the atmosphere by eliminating radioactive materials in the gas. A Multi Venturi Scrubber System (MVSS) is one of the devices for the filtered venting, and is used to realize filtered venting without any power supply. The MVSS is composed of a "Venturi Scrubbers" part and a "bubble column" part. In the Venturi Scrubbers part of the MVSS, there are hundreds of the Venturi scrubbers (VS). In an operation mode of the MVSS, the radioactive materials are eliminated through the gas-liquid interface from the pollutant gas to the liquid phase of a dispersed flow in the VS and a bubbly flow in the bubble column part. In the VS, the dispersed flow is formed from the liquid, which is suctioned through the hole for suction (called self-priming). In previous studies, an evaluation method to evaluate the liquid flow rate by the self-priming was developed. However, to develop evaluation methods of performance of the VSs, the two-phase flow behavior must be investigated, including droplet size and velocity difference of liquid and gas phases. Two-phase flow behavior in the VS is complicated, and it is difficult to estimate two-phase flow behavior of the VS by only experimental procedures. In this study, to investigate the hydraulic behavior of the VS, we tried to apply a detailed numerical simulation method of two-phase flow to the numerical simulation of the VS. In the simulation, TPFIT developed in JAEA was used as the detailed numerical simulation method. In this paper, we performed the numerical simulation air-water two-phase flow in the of the lab scale VS by the TPFIT, and numerical results were compared with experimental results.

For the safety design in which heat is properly removed from the molten fuel after the core disruptive accident in a sodium-cooled fast reactor, the estimation of the breakup behavior of molten fuel discharged into the coolant like a jet is desired. In order to investigate the influence of viscocity on the jet behavior, we simulated a jet discharged into a coolant using the three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model for two-phase fluid, and examined the influence of Ohnesorge number and Reynolds number on the jet behavior. As a result, we made clear that it is necessary to consider viscosity of the coolant as well as that of the jet for the estimation of jet behavior.

The Breath-Mass was put in practical use in the development of the gas analysis technology with quadrupole mass specrometer. Features of the Breath-Mass are measurement at short time, high sensitivity and reproducibility. Moreover, on-site measurement was added to features and application of the Breath-Mass in various fields was aimed at. In development of application, lectures of operation with the instrument were required. This report was summarized as operation manual whose contents ware handling, measurement and maintenance.

Reduced activation ferritic steel is one of the leading structural material candidates for a nuclear fusion reactor. Since the solute impurities have an effect on the embrittlement through segregation under irradiation, the stability of impurity elements should be elaborated. In the present study the segregation characteristics of tungsten and some general solute impurities in bcc iron were investigated nonempirically by first principle calculations, where the equilibrium segregation was considered via a regular solution model and the change in enthalpy for segregation were directly evaluated for comparison. Subsequently the energetic stabilities of impurity-impurity and impurity-vacancy pair were evaluated. The segregation enthalpy is influenced by the electronic interaction between the d-electron of Fe and the outer electron of the impurity element, and molybdenum and tungsten tend to prevent from the impurity segregation.

This study focused on more reproducible pumping time constant of vacuum devices. The mass spectrum measured in non-steady state was corrected with a mathematical technique corresponding to constant pressure in steady state. The correction mass spectrum was evaluated from the viewpoint of the gas analysis. In measuring the sample gas was a pulse gas injection. After injection the gas pressure decreases exponentially. Here was confirmed reproducible pumping time constant by pulsing gas injection and investigated influence of the pumping time constant to the correction mass spectrum. N$$_{2}$$, O$$_{2}$$, Ar, CO$$_{2}$$ were measured the above method and analyzed. The correction mass spectrum showed use from the comparison with mass spectrum in The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) mass spectra library as for the analysis enough.

The research and development plan in Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory are summarized according to the 2nd Midterm Plan till 2014 fiscal year of JAEA. In this midterm, galleries and the infrastructures for the research and development up to the depth of 350 m are constructed by Private Financial Initiative (PFI). Additionally Phase 3: Operation phase at the galleries begins in parallel to Phase 2: Construction phase. In these phases various research and development including collaboration with other institutes are conducted at the galleries. Generallic applicable techniques on the subject of the investigation of geological environment, facility construction in deep underground and the reliability of geological deposal are developed during the phase. The feasibility and reliance of various technologies concerning geological disposal is demonstrated by widely opening the outcome to the public in the society.

In the quantitative measure of air pollution gas and impurity gas in the aluminum recycle material etc, it is requested to show the amount of the gas directly by the weight value from the viewpoint of global standard. Therefore, standard gas sources expressed in units of weight are needed. The vapor-liquid equilibrium type of gas permeation sources (hereafter "P-tube") is used well in the atmosphere as calibration gas of the measuring equipment and a standard gas source for low concentration of gas. The study aims to estimate performance of P-tubes in the vacuum. Specifically, weight change of P-tubes were measured with the vacuum balance and at the same time concentration of gas constituents were also measured by Electron Ionization-Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (hereafter, EI-QMS). The relation of both was examined. The prospect was obtained that the P-tube was able to be used as a standard gas source in the vacuum though the warming was needed.
