Global fixed point potential approach to frustrated antiferromagnets

We revisit the critical behavior of classical frustrated systems using the nonperturbative renormalization group (NPRG) equation. Our study is performed within the local potential approximation of this equation to which is added the flow of the field renormalization. Our flow equations are functional to avoid possible artifacts coming from the field expansion of the fixed point potential which consists in keeping only a limited number of coupling constants. We explain in detail our numerical implementation, its advantages and the difficulties encountered in the vicinity of $$d=2$$. For N-component spins, the function $$N_c(d)$$ separating the regions of first and second order transitions in the $$(d,N)$$ plane is computed for d between 4 and 2.3. Our results confirm what was previously found with cruder approximations of the NPRG equation and contradict both the fixed dimension perturbative approach and some of the results obtained within the conformal bootstrap approach.

フランス放射線防護・原子力安全研究所(IRSN)と日本原子力研究開発機構(JAEA)は、臨界安全分野において長年のパートナーシップを築いている。今回の共同研究でIRSNとJAEAは、JAEAが更新する新しい臨界実験装置STACYを用いた共同実験を計画している。STACY実験の計画で両機関が使用するコード(MVP3, MORET6など)や核データ(JENDL, JEFF)を比較するため、両機関がかつて所有していた臨界集合体であるApparatus BとTCAのICSBEPハンドブックからのベンチマーク、新しいSTACYの計算モデルについて計算結果の比較が実施された。新STACYの計算モデルを含め、数種類の中性子減速条件と臨界水高さを含む計算を行い、その計算結果には、核データライブラリの処理や形式に起因すると思われるわずかな系統的な差異があった。しかし、新しいコードと新しい核データを含む計算結果は、概して実験値とよく一致することがわかった。したがって、双方の有する計算ツールを新STACYの実験設計に利用することに問題はない。加えて、JENDL-5に含まれる新しいTSLデータが実効増倍率に与える影響についても計算解析で調査した。これらの計算結果に対する実験的検証は、両研究機関共同による新STACYの臨界実験によって行われる予定である。

福島第一原子力発電所(1F)の損傷した原子炉の廃止措置における重要な課題である燃料デブリの切断作業における放射性エアロゾルの発生と飛散を評価する目的で行われたURASOLプロジェクトにおいて、模擬燃料デブリの加熱および機械的切断に伴い生成するエアロゾルの質量濃度、リアルタイム数密度、質量基準の粒径分布、形態、および化学的特性の観点からの特性評価について報告する。加熱試験においては温度上昇に伴う粒径増大が観察され、粒子数密度に関しては劣化ウランを用いた模擬燃料デブリを用いた例がHf含有模擬燃料デブリを用いた試験よりも小さい数密度であった。機械的切断においてはエアロゾルの空気動力学的質量中央径は、放射性試料と非放射性試料でほぼ同程度(約3.7$$sim$$4.4$$mu$$m)であった。

福島第一原子力発電所(1F)における燃料デブリ取出しを安全に実施するためには、燃料デブリの切断時に発生する放射性微粒子の定量評価が必要である。我々はウラン含有のIn/Ex-Vessel組成を持つ模擬燃料デブリを作製し、それらを加熱した際に生じるエアロゾルの物理、化学的特性を評価した。それらを基に1F-Unit2の燃料デブリを加熱法の代表例であるレーザー切断した際に生じるエアロゾルの同位体組成と放射能を推定したところ、$$^{238}$$Pu、$$^{241}$$Am、$$^{244}$$Cmを主とするプルトニウムが$$alpha$$核種として、$$^{241}$$Pu、$$^{137}$$Cs-Ba、$$^{90}$$Sr-Yが$$beta$$核種としての着目核種であることが分かった。

非常に中性子が過剰な原子核$$^{28}$$Oは、陽子、中性子ともに魔法数であることから古くからその性質に興味が持たれていたが、酸素の最後の束縛核$$^{24}$$Oよりも中性子が4個も多いため、これまで観測されてこなかった。この論文では、理化学研究所RIBFにて$$^{29}$$Fからの1陽子ノックアウト反応によって$$^{28}$$Oを生成し、そこから放出される中性子を測定することによって初めてその観測に成功した。核構造の観点からは、$$^{28}$$Oでは二重閉殻が保たれているか興味が持たれていたが、実験で得られた分光学的因子が殻模型計算で予言されて程度の大きいことから、閉殻構造をもたない可能性が高いことがわかった。

Ultralow thermal conductivity and fast ionic diffusion endow superionic materials with excellent performance both as thermoelectric converters and as solid-state electrolytes. Yet the correlation and interdependence between these two features remain unclear owing to a limited understanding of their complex atomic dynamics. Here we investigate ionic diffusion and lattice dynamics in argyrodite Ag$$_{8}$$SnSe$$_{6}$$ using synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering techniques along with machine-learned molecular dynamics. We identify a critical interplay of the vibrational dynamics of mobile Ag and a host framework that controls the overdamping of low-energy Ag-dominated phonons into a quasi-elastic response, enabling superionicity. Concomitantly, the persistence of long-wavelength transverse acoustic phonons across the superionic transition challenges a proposed 'liquid-like thermal conduction' picture. Rather, a striking thermal broadening of low-energy phonons, starting even below 50 K, reveals extreme phonon anharmonicity and weak bonding as underlying features of the potential energy surface responsible for the ultralow thermal conductivity ($$<$$ 0.5 Wm$$^{-1}$$K$$^{-1}$$) and fast diffusion. Our results provide fundamental insights into the complex atomic dynamics in superionic materials for energy conversion and storage.

$$^{29}$$Neからの1中性子除去反応を用いて、$$^{28}$$Neの詳細な$$gamma$$線分光を行った。平行運動量分布の解析に基づき、$$^{28}$$Neの準位構造とスピンパリティを決定し、初めて負のパリティ状態を同定した。測定された断面積と運動量分布から、N=20とN=28のシェルギャップの消失の証拠となる有意なintruder p-wave強度が明らかになった。束縛状態については、弱いf-waveの可能性のある強度が観測された。いくつかの有効相互作用を用いた大規模殻模型計算では、実験的に観測された大きなp-wave強度と小さなf-wave強度は再現されず、Ne同位体に沿った反転の島への遷移の完全な理論的記述への挑戦が続いていることを示している。

We show that at $$N=infty$$ and below its upper critical dimension, $$d<d_{rm up}$$, the critical and tetracritical behaviors of the O$$(N)$$ models are associated with the same renormalization group fixed point (FP) potential. Only their derivatives make them different with the subtleties that taking their $$Ntoinfty$$ limit and deriving them do not commute and that two relevant eigenperturbations show singularities. This invalidates both the $$epsilon$$- and the $$1/N$$- expansions. We also show how the Bardeen-Moshe-Bander line of tetracritical FPs at $$N=infty$$ and $$d=d_{rm up}$$ can be understood from a finite-$$N$$ analysis.

One of the important challenges for the decommissioning of the damaged reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) is the fuel debris retrieval. The URASOL (URAnium and aeroSOL) project has been undertaken by the French consortium laboratories consisting of ONET, CEA, and IRSN for JAEA. It aims at acquiring basic data on the generation and characteristics of radioactive aerosols from the thermal or mechanical processing of fuel debris simulant. Prototypic fuel debris samples were fabricated based on the average of the lower head compositions computed in the OECD/BSAF benchmark. Samples were heated in an induction furnace to simulate thermal cutting and released aerosols were collected during three temperature ramps using impactors. The collected aerosols were chemically analyzed by ICP-AES and ICP-MS. Iron and tin are the major elements found in these aerosols, followed by chromium and silicon. Significant releases of tellurium, barium and cerium were observed.

Incompleteness of the large-$$N$$ analysis of the $$O(N)$$ models; Nonperturbative cuspy fixed points and their nontrivial homotopy at finite $$N$$

We summarize the usual implementations of the large-$$N$$ limit of $$O(N)$$ models and show in detail why and how they can miss some physically important fixed points when they become singular in the infinite $$N$$. Using Wilson's renormalization group in its functional nonperturbative versions, we show how the singularities build up as $$N$$ increases. In the Wilson-Polchinski version of the nonperturbative renormalization group, we show that the singularities are cusps, which become boundary layers for finite but large values of $$N$$. The corresponding fixed points being never close to the Gaussian, are out of reach of the usual perturbative approaches. We find four new fixed points and study them in all dimensions and for all $$N$$ and show that they play an important role for the tricritical physics of $$O(N)$$ models. Finally, we show that some of these fixed points are bi-valued when they are considered as functions of $$d$$ and $$N$$ thus revealing important and nontrivial homotopy structures.

福島第一原子力発電所(1F)の事故炉廃止措置における重要な課題の一つが、燃料デブリの取り出しである。ONET Technologies, CEA, IRSNからなるフランスのコンソーシアムがJAEA/CLADSのために実施したURASOLプロジェクトは、燃料デブリ模擬物質の熱的・機械的加工による放射性エアロゾルの生成と特性に関する科学的基礎データの取得に取り組んでいる。VITAE施設で行われる加熱試験はレーザーによる熱的切断の代表的な条件を模擬している。機械的切断では、FUJISAN施設においてコアボーリング試験を実施した。燃料デブリ模擬物質は、非放射性試験と放射性試験のために開発されている。化学的特性評価と粒径情報の取得は、デブリ取り出しで発生する可能性のある放射性粒子の特性推定のために実施された。これらの情報は1Fにおける燃料デブリ取り出し作業において放射線防護上の対策を評価するうえで重要な情報である。

Spin and lattice are two fundamental degrees of freedom in a solid, and their fluctuations about the equilibrium values in a magnetic ordered crystalline lattice form quasiparticles termed magnons (spin waves) and phonons (lattice waves), respectively. In most materials with strong spin-lattice coupling (SLC), the interaction of spin and lattice induces energy gaps in the spin wave dispersion at the nominal intersections of magnon and phonon modes. Here we use neutron scattering to show that in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals honeycomb lattice ferromagnetic CrGeTe$$_{3}$$, spin waves propagating within the 2D plane exhibit an anomalous dispersion, damping, and breakdown of quasiparticle conservation, while magnons along the c axis behave as expected for a local moment ferromagnet. These results indicate the presence of dynamical SLC arising from the zero-temperature quantum fluctuations in CrGeTe$$_{3}$$, suggesting that the observed in-plane spin waves are mixed spin and lattice quasiparticles fundamentally different from pure magnons and phonons.

シビアアクシデントに関する日仏共同実験の一環として、ナトリウム冷却高速炉の原子炉容器内下部プレナムへ溶融燃料が流出した時の燃料-冷却材相互作用について、その解明に向けた研究を実施している。MELT施設では、ナトリウム中へ流出したキログラム単位の模擬溶融炉心物質が急冷される様子をX線で可視化することができる。現在準備中のSERUA施設では、融体と冷却材の接触境界面温度が上昇した場合の沸騰熱伝達を評価するためのデータ取得を予定している。この論文では、これらの施設を活用した実験協力の現状について紹介する。

The use of Neutron Resonance Transmission Analysis to characterize homogeneous samples not fulfilling good transmission geometry conditions is discussed. Analytical expressions for such samples have been derived and implemented in the resonance shape analysis code REFIT. They were validated by experiments at the time-of-flight facility GELINA using a set of metallic natural copper samples. The expressions were used to derive sample characteristics by a least squares adjustment to experimental transmission data. In addition, the resonance parameters of Cu for energies below 6 keV, which are reported in the literature and recommended in evaluated data libraries, were verified. This research was implemented under the subsidiary for nuclear security promotion of MEXT.

Neutron resonance transmission analysis for measurement of nuclear materials in nuclear fuel

In fields of nuclear safeguards and nuclear security, non-destructive assay (NDA) techniques are needed in order to quantify special nuclear materials (SNMs) in nuclear fuels. Among those techniques, active NDA ones would be preferable to passive ones. One candidate of active NDA techniques is neutron resonance transmission analysis (NRTA). In fact, experiments done at GELINA have shown that NRTA has high potential enough to quantify SNMs in complex materials. Currently, such a NRTA system requires a large electron accelerator facility to generate intense neutron sources. In other words, it is very difficult to perform NRTA at various facilities that need to measure SNMs. Thus, downsizing a NRTA system would be one solution of its difficulty. In order to realize a compact NRTA system, we develop a prototype with a D-T neutron generator that has a pulse width of 10 $$mu$$s. For this aim, numerical calculations to optimize the compact NRTA system were done. In addition, NRTA measurements with simulated fuel pins were made at neutron time-of-flight facilities such as GELINA. In this presentation, we present results of the numerical calculations and the experimental results. On the basis of those results we discuss a future prospect of a compact NRTA system that would be applicable to SNM quantification. This research was implemented under the subsidiary for nuclear security promotion of MEXT.

Development of active neutron NDA system for nuclear materials

Nuclear material accountancy is of fundamental importance for nuclear safeguards and security. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no established technique that enables us to accurately determine the amount of Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) and Minor Actinides (MA) in high radioactive nuclear materials. Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission Collaboration Action Sheet-7 started in 2015. The purpose of this project is to develop an innovative non-destructive analysis (NDA) system using a D-T pulsed neutron source. Active neutron NDA techniques, namely Differential Die-Away Analysis (DDA), Prompt Gamma-ray Analysis (PGA), Neutron Resonance Capture Analysis (NRCA), Neutron Resonance Transmission Analysis (NRTA) and Delayed Gamma-ray Analysis (DGA) have been studied and developed. The different methods can provide complementary information which is particularly useful for quantification of SNM and MA in high radioactive nuclear materials. The second phase of the project has started. In the second phase, we will continue to conduct additional research to improve the methodology and develop an integrated NDA system. This presentation gives an overview of the project and the NDA system and reports the recent results. This research was implemented under the subsidiary for nuclear security promotion of MEXT.

CIELO国際協力では、原子力施設の臨界性に大きな影響を与える重要核種($$^{235}$$U, $$^{238}$$U, $$^{239}$$Pu, $$^{56}$$Fe, $$^{16}$$O, $$^{1}$$H)の中性子断面積データの精度を改善し、これまで矛盾していると考えられた点を解消することを目的として研究が行われた。多くの研究機関が参加したこのパイロットプロジェクトは、IAEAの支援も受けて、OECD/NEAの評価国際協力ワーキングパーティ(WPEC)のSubgroup 40として組織された。本CIELOプロジェクトは、新たな実験研究や理論研究を行う動機付けとなり、測定データを正確に反映し臨界性の積分テストに優れた新たな一連の評価済みライブラリとして結実した。本報告書は、これまでの研究成果と、本国際協力の次の段階の計画概要をまとめたものである。

Neutron-induced reactions can be used to study the properties of nuclear materials in the field of nuclear safeguards and security. The elemental and isotopic composition of these materials can be determined by using the presence of resonance structures in the reaction cross sections as fingerprints. This idea is the basis of two non-destructive analytical techniques which have been developed at the GELINA neutron time-of-flight facility of the JRC-IRMM: Neutron Resonance Capture Analysis (NRCA) and Neutron Resonance Transmission Analysis (NRTA). A full quantitative validation of the NRTA technique was obtained by determining the areal densities of enriched reference samples used for safeguards applications with an accuracy better than 1%. Moreover, a combination of NRTA and NRCA has been proposed for the characterisation of particle-like debris of melted fuel formed in severe nuclear accidents. In order to deal with the problems due to the diversity in shape and size of these samples and the presence of strong absorbing matrix materials, new capabilities have been implemented in the resonance shape analysis code REFIT. They have been validated by performing a blind test in which the elemental abundance of a combined sample composed of unknown quantities of materials such as cobalt, tungsten, rhodium or gold was determined with accuracies better than 2%.
