Review of JENDL/HE-2007 neutron-induced fission cross sections of uranium-235 and 238 above 200 MeV

The $$^{235}$$U(n,f) cross section values were not correctly compiled in the ENDF format, and wrong values are disseminated in the JENDL/HE-2007 file. The high energy part of the $$^{235}$$U(n,f) cross section for the JENDL/HE-2007 library was evaluated by using the results of the FISCAL code. The correct $$^{235}$$U(n,f) cross section values of the JENDL/HE-2007 library above 200 MeV is given in this report.

The Joint Evaluated Fission and Fusion nuclear data library 3.3 is described. New evaluations for neutron-induced interactions with the major actinides $$^{235}$$U, $$^{238}$$U and $$^{239}$$Pu, on $$^{241}$$Am and $$^{23}$$Na, $$^{59}$$Ni, Cr, Cu, Zr, Cd, Hf, W, Au, Pb and Bi are presented. It includes new fission yileds, prompt fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons per fission. In addition, new data for radioactive decay, thermal neutron scattering, gamma-ray emission, neutron activation, delayed neutrons and displacement damage are presented. JEFF-3.3 was complemented by files from the TENDL project. The libraries for photon, proton, deuteron, triton, helion and alpha-particle induced reactions are from TENDL-2017. The demands for uncertainty quantification in modeling led to many new covariance data. A comparison between results from model calculations using the JEFF-3.3 library and those from benchmark experiments for criticality, delayed neutron yields, shielding and decay heat, reveals that JEFF-3.3 is excellent for a wide range of nuclear technology applications, in particular nuclear energy.

Dimension-reduced cross-section adjustment method based on minimum variance unbiased estimation

A new formulation of the cross-section adjustment methodology with the dimensionality reduction technique has been derived. This new formulation is proposed as the dimension reduced cross-section adjustment method (DRCA). Since the derivation of DRCA is based on the minimum variance unbiased estimation (MVUE), an assumption of normal distribution is not required. The result of DRCA depends on a user-defined matrix that determines the dimension reduced feature subspace. We have examine three variations of DRCA, namely DRCA1, DRCA2, and DRCA3. Mathematical investigation and numerical verification have revealed that DRCA2 is equivalent to the currently widely used cross-section adjustment method. Moreover, DRCA3 is found to be identical to the cross-section adjustment method based on MVUE, which has been proposed in the previous study.

Recently we have examined KERMA factors and DPA cross section data in the latest official ACE files of JENDL-4.0, ENDF/B-VII.1, JEFF-3.2 and FENDL-3.0 in more detail and we found out the following new problems on the KERMA factors and DPA cross section data. (1) NJOY bugs and incorrect nuclear data generated KERMA factors and DPA cross section data of no increase with decreasing neutron energy in low neutron energy. (2) Huge helium production data caused drastically large KERMA factors and DPA cross section data in low neutron energy. (3) It seemed that NJOY could not adequately process capture cross section data in File 6, not File 12-15. (4) KERMA factors with the kinematics method are not correct for nuclear data libraries without detailed secondary particle data (energy-angular distribution data). These problems should be resolved based on our study.

The 2015 Symposium on Nuclear Data was held at Ibaraki Quantum Beam Research Center, on November 19 and 20, 2015. The symposium was organized by the Nuclear Data Division of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan in cooperation with Nuclear Science and Engineering Center of Japan Atomic Energy Agency and North Kanto Branch of Atomic Energy Society of Japan. In the symposium, there were two tutorials, "Theory of Few-Body Systems and Recent Topics" and "Use of Covariance Data 2015" and four oral sessions, "Recent Research Topics", "Progress of AIMAC Project", "Present Status of JENDL Evaluated Files", and "Nuclear Data Applications". In addition, recent research progress on experiments, evaluation, benchmark and application was presented in a poster session. Among 99 participants, all presentations and following discussions were very active and fruitful. This report consists of total 46 papers including 13 oral and 33 poster presentations.

The 2014 Symposium on Nuclear Data was held at Conference Hall, Hokkaido University, on November 27 and 28, 2014. The symposium was organized by the Nuclear Data Division of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan, Hokkaido Branch of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan, and Nuclear Reaction Data Centre, Faculty of Science, Hokkaido University in cooperation with Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate of Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Nuclear data evaluation of the $$^7$$Li(p,xn) reaction for incident energies up to 200 MeV

Neutron emission from the $$^7$$Li(p,n)$$^7$$Be reaction can be divided into two components: a mono-energetic component for the transition to the ground and the 1st excited states and a continuum component formed by $$^7$$Li breakup processes. For the former, we have obtained the differential cross sections by interpolation based on Legendre fitting of available experimental data up to 45 MeV and apply DWBA calculations above 45 MeV. Next, we have applied the CCONE code to DDX calculations of the continuum component, and adjusted pre-equilibrium model parameters to reproduce experimental data well. Finally, both the results are merged and then the evaluated DDX data are completed.

Development of multi-group neutron activation cross-section library for decommissioning of nuclear facilities

In the safety assessment concerning disposal of radioactive wastes generated in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, it is necessary to evaluate the radionuclide inventory produced by the activation of structured materials. For this purpose, we have to pay much attention to the activation of many impurities irradiated in various neutron spectra depending on their positions and materials. Therefore, accurate activation cross-section data are necessary for many nuclides and reactions. A new multi-group neutron activation cross-section library (MAXS) was developed based on the recent nuclear data JENDL-4.0 and JEFF-3.0/A to apply it to the activation calculations for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The library contains cross-sections and isomeric ratios for many reactions such as (n,$$gamma$$), (n,f), (n,2n), (n,3n), (n,p), (n,$$alpha$$), (n,d), (n,t), (n,n$$alpha$$), (n,np), and so on, for 779 nuclides, in the 199-energy group structure of VITAMIN-B6.

In order to measure the neutron capture cross section of minor actinides, we have proposed the use of a 4$$pi$$ Ge spectrometer. A Time-of-Flight neutron beam line for the experiment has been constructed at the KURRI electron LINAC. The assembling of the 4$$pi$$ Ge spectrometer is in progress. We are also developing a new data acquisition system based on a digital processing technique.

The Fusion Neutronics Source (FNS) of JAERI currently carries out the measurements of energetic charged particles emitted from fusion materials irradiated with a well-collimated 14 MeV neutron beam. At the beginning, the double differential cross section beryllium was measured. We have measured proton, triton and a particle emitted from a beryllium sample of 100 $$mu$$m in thickness.The a particle and triton were produced by $$^{9}$$Be(n,$$alpha$$)$$^{6}$$He, $$^{9}$$Be(n,2n)2$$alpha$$ and $$^{9}$$Be(n,t)$$^{7}$$Li reactions respectively. Measured total reaction rates from the counts of a particles and tritons were 2.7$$times$$10$$^{-24}$$ and 6$$times$$10$$^{-27}$$/atom/neutron, respectively, which were consistent with the calculated values from the nuclear data JENDL-3.2.

Program POD-P; A Computer code to calculate cross sections for neutron-induced preequilibrium nuclear reactions

The computer code, POD-P, was developed to calculate energy spectra and angular distributions of emitted particles for the neutron-induced preequiliblium nuclear reactions. The energy-differential cross sections are computed with the classical one-component exciton model for the nucleon and composite-particle emissions. Along with this, the semi-empirical exciton models are also used for the composite-particle emissions. The double-differential cross sections are derived from those model calculations plus the angular-distribution systematics. The computational method and explanation of input parameters are given with some output examples.

Nuclear data for photonuclear reactions are required in the field of shielding design of high-energy electron accelerators and high-energy $$gamma$$-ray therapy. The JENDL Photonuclear Data File was prepared by a working group on nuclear data evaluations for photonuclear reactions in Japanese Nuclear Data Committee. From a survey of many literatures, it is difficult to construct the photonuclear data file by using only measured data, since there are not sufficient experimental data. We were therefore evaluating with theoretical calculations based on statistical nuclear reaction models. The photonuclear cross sections that are to be contained in the file are as follows: photoabsorption cross sections, yield cross sections and DDX for neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, $$^{3}$$He-particles and alpha-particles, and isotope production cross sections. For the actinide nuclides, photofission cross sections are also included. The maximum energy of incident photons is 140 MeV and stored are the photonuclear data for 68 nuclides from $$^{2}$$H to $$^{237}$$Np.

Neutron cross-section evaluations for $$^{70,72,73,74,76}$$Ge

Entirely new evaluations for all the Ge isotopes, from thermal energy to 20 MeV, has been performed with focus on photon production. In the resonance region, parameters were improved considerably compared to earlier evaluations. In the fast region, code EMPIRE-2.19 was used. Validation was done against photon data on Fe and Nb. Isotopic evaluations for Ge were summed up and compared with available measurements on natural Ge. Various quantities related to photon production, showing strong dependence on neutron incident energy, are discussed.

Production of MVP neutron cross section libraries based on the latest evaluated nuclear data files

The 2nd version of code system, LICEM-2, has been developed to produce neutron cross section libraries for the MVP continuous energy Monte Carlo code from an evaluated nuclear data library in the ENDF format. The code system can process nuclear data in the latest ENDF-6 format and produce cross section libraries for MVP's capability of transport calculation at arbitrary temperature. By using the present system, MVP neutron cross section libraries have been prepared from the latest evaluations of JENDL, ENDF/B and JEFF data bases. This report describes the specification of MVP neutron cross section library, the details of each code in the code system, how to use them and MVP neutron cross section libraries produced with the code system.
