鉛ビスマス共晶(LBE)合金は加速器駆動システム(ADS)の核破砕中性子ターゲットや冷却材として用いられ、核破砕生成物として多くの元素が生成するため、その放出および輸送挙動を評価することが重要である。そこで、J-PARCのADSターゲット試験施設(TEF-T)のLBEループについて、LBE中に生成する核破砕生成物のインベントリおよび物理化学的組成について検討した。LBE内の核破砕生成物インベントリは、PHITSコードを使用して評価した。LBE中の核破砕生成物の物理化学的組成は、350$$^{circ}$$C$$sim$$500$$^{circ}$$CのLBE運転温度及びLBE中の酸素濃度10ppb$$sim$$1ppmの条件下、Thermo-Calcコードを用いて計算した。計算の結果、Rb, Tl, Tc, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Hgの8元素がすべての条件下でLBEに可溶であり、化合物は形成されなかった。Ce, Sr, Zr及びYの酸化物はLBE中でCeO$$_{2}$$, SrO, ZrO$$_{2}$$およびY$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$として安定であることが示唆された。

J-PARC核変換実験施設のADSターゲット試験施設において、250kW出力ビーム運転時に ターゲットとして使用される鉛ビスマスが鉛ビスマス循環系から漏洩し、放射性物質が排気筒か ら外部へ放出された場合の事業所境界における公衆が受ける被ばく線量について、様々な保守的 仮定を想定しながら評価した。その結果、事業所境界における被ばく量は約660$$mu$$Svであり、その大部分は鉛ビスマスから核破砕生成物として発生する水銀, 希ガスおよびヨウ素による寄与であることがわかった。保守的な事象想定にもかかわらず、被ばく量の合計は一般公衆が受ける年間被ばく量よりも低い値であり、本施設が放射性物質の漏洩に対して十分な安全裕度を持つことが示された。

Quantum spin fluctuation in a low-dimensional or frustrated magnet breaks magnetic ordering while keeping spin correlation. Such fluctuation has been a central topic in magnetism because of its relevance to high-Tc superconductivity and topological states. However, utilizing such spin states has been quite difficult. In a one-dimensional spin-1/2 chain, a particle-like excitation called a spinon is known to be responsible for spin fluctuation in a paramagnetic state. Spinons behave as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid at low energy, and the spin system is often called a quantum spin chain. Here we show that a quantum spin chain generates and carries spin current, which is attributed to spinon spin current. This is demonstrated by observing an anisotropic negative spin Seebeck effect along the spin chains in Sr$$_{2}$$CuO$$_{3}$$. The results show that spin current can flow even in an atomic channel owing to long-range spin fluctuation.


Impact of PHITS spallation models on the neutronics design of an accelerator-driven system

The impact of different spallation models and parametrisations of nucleon-nucleus interactions in PHITS on nuclear characteristics of an accelerator-driven system (ADS) is investigated. Cut-off neutrons below 20 MeV calculated by a current default option of the spallation model (i.e., Li${`e}$ge Intranuclear Cascade (INC) model version 4.6, INCL4.6) are found to be 14% less than those by the old spallation model (it i.e. Bertini INC model). This decrease increases the proton beam current that drives the 800-MW thermal power, and impacts various ADS parameters, including material damage, nuclear heating of the proton beam window (PBW), and the inventory of spallation products. To validate these options based on the ADS neutronics design, we conduct benchmark calculations of the total and nonelastic cross sections, thick target neutron yields, and activation reaction rate distributions. The results suggest that Pearlstein-Niita systematics, which is a default option of the nucleon-nucleus interaction parametrisation, would be best option and that the Bertini INC is better suited for cut-off neutrons than INCL4.6. However, because of the difficulty in making a definite conclusion on the spallation models, we conclude that relatively large uncertainty in the cut-off neutrons, which is the difference between the two spallation models (i.e. 14%), should be considered.


Strong suppression of the spin hall effect in the spin glass state

We have measured spin Hall effects in spin glass metals, CuMnBi alloys, with the spin absorption method in the lateral spin valve structure. Far above the spin glass temperature $$T_{g}$$ where the magnetic moments of Mn impurities are randomly frozen, the spin Hall angle of a CuMnBi ternary alloy is as large as that of a CuBi binary alloy. Surprisingly, however, it starts to decrease at about 4$$T_{g}$$ and becomes as little as 7 times smaller at 0.5$$T_{g}$$. A similar tendency was also observed in anomalous Hall effects in the ternary alloys. We propose an explanation in terms of a simple model considering the relative dynamics between the localized moment and the conduction electron spin.

The spin Hall effect (SHE) and its inverse have key roles in spintronic devices as they allow conversion of charge currents to and from spin currents. The conversion efficiency strongly depends on material details, such as the electronic band structure and the nature of impurities. Here we show an anomaly in the inverse SHE in weak ferromagnetic NiPd alloys near their Curie temperatures with a shape independent of material details, such as Ni concentrations. By extending Kondo's model for the anomalous Hall effect (AHE), we explain the observed anomaly as originating from the second-order nonlinear spin fluctuation of Ni moments. This brings to light an essential symmetry difference between the SHE and the AHE, which reflects the first-order nonlinear fluctuations of local moments. Our finding opens up a new application of the SHE, by which a minuscule magnetic moment can be detected.

本報告では、東日本大震災の発生時におけるJ-PARC物質・生命科学実験施設(MLF)の中性子源ステーションの挙動、被害状況を調査する。大震災発生時、MLFでは幾つかの機器で大きな揺れを検知した後、外部電源が喪失し、全循環システムが自動停止した。水素は設計通り屋外に放出され、機器異常による水銀, 水素, 放射性ガスの漏えいも生じなかった。一方、激しい揺れは遮蔽体ブロックのずれ、建屋周辺の地盤沈下による外部供給配管の破断を引き起こした。この配管破断による圧縮空気の喪失は、圧空シリンダーを用いた固定装置や空気操作弁などに影響を及ぼしたが、主要機器の大きな破損までは至らなかった。これらの結果は、本ステーションの緊急事態に対する安全設計の妥当性を実証した。

We report a Cu $$K$$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of orbital excitations in KCuF$$_3$$. By performing the polarization analysis of the scattered photons, we disclose that the excitation between the $$e_g$$ orbitals and the excitations from $$t_{2g}$$ to $$e_g$$ exhibit distinct polarization dependence. The polarization dependence of the respective excitations is interpreted based on a phenomenological consideration of the symmetry of the RIXS process that yields a necessary condition for observing the excitations. In addition, we show that the orbital excitations are dispersionless within our experimental resolution.

Sr$$_{14-x}$$Ca$$_x$$Cu$$_{24}$$O$$_{41}$$ (SCCO), which is composed of two-leg ladders and edge-sharing chains, is the first superconducting cuprate without CuO$$_2$$ planes. By substituting Ca for Sr, holes are transferred from the chains to the ladders. It was recently shown that charge ordering (CO) along the leg direction in the ladder occurs at $$x=0$$ and the periodicity is five times the unit length along the c axis. In order to investigate the electronic excitations associated with the CO, we carried out resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments for SCCO ($$x=0,6$$). Cu-$$K$$ RIXS can directly probe the momentum-dependent electronic excitations related to the Cu site, which are resonantly enhanced by tuning the incident photon energy to the Cu $$K$$-edge. We measured the q dependence of the intraband excitations, which is associated with the dynamics of doped holes in the Zhang-Rice singlet band. The intensity is enhanced at the momentum $${bf q}=(q_{rm rung},q_{rm leg})=(0,2pi/5)$$ corresponding to the periodicity of the CO in $$x=0$$, while the temperature dependence of the enhancement is different for $$x=0$$ and $$x=6$$. We discuss the relationship between our experimental results and the occurrence of the CO.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) in the hard X-ray regime is a new spectroscopic technique to measure electronic excitations utilizing brilliant synchrotron radiation. It has the great advantage that the momentum dependence can be measured unlike conventional optical methods. As inelastic neutron scattering gives spin or lattice dynamics, inelastic X-ray scattering can be a tool to measure charge dynamics in solids through the coupling of photon to the charge of the electron. Here, I would like to present our RIXS studies on high-$$T_c$$ cuprates and related materials which were performed in close collaboration with theorists. In doped Mott insulators, an interband excitation across the Mott gap and an intraband excitation below the gap are observed in the low energy region of RIXS spectra. Momentum and carrier-doping dependence of the excitations will be discussed.
