The optimum conditions for grafting were studied in terms of % degree of grafting (Dg). Conversion of the ester groups present in poly(methyl acrylate)-grafted-cassava starch copolymer into hydroxamic acid was carried out by treatment with hydroxylamine in the presence of alkaline solution. The adsorbent of 191%Dg had total adsorption capacities of 2.6, 1.5, 1.4, 1.2 and 1.6 mmol/g-adsorbent for Cd, Al, UO, V, and Pb, respectively, in the batch mode adsorption.

A new adsorbent containing hydroxamic acid groups was synthesized by radiation induced graft polymerization. First, methyl acrylate (MA) was grafted onto nonwoven fabric composed of polyethylene-coated polypropylene fiber. The resultant polymer was immersed in the hydroxylamine solution to convert the methoxy groups to hydroxamic acid groups. Graft polymerization was carried out in MA emulsion solution with sodium dodecyl sulfate as a surfactant. The adsorbent was treated by NaOH before adsorption test. The adsorbent containing hydroxamic acid groups can adsorb 94% of Al, 96% of V, 97% of Pb, and 97% of U at pH 6 after contacted with 100 ppb metal mixture solution for 24 hours. The distribution co-efficiencies were 1.610, 2.410, 3.210 and 3.210 for Al, V, Pb and U, respectively. The hydroxamic acid adsorbent is concluded to be a excellent affinity towards chelation with various metals.
