Development of hydrogen oxidation reaction catalysts to overcome CO poisoning and elucidation of reaction mechanism

Passive autocatalytic recombiner (PAR) represents a potential technology for ensuring process safety in the hydrogen society. PARs function through the catalytic oxidation of generated or leaked hydrogen, facilitating its conversion into water and effectively mitigating the risk of hydrogen explosions. CO is recognized as a catalyst poison that hampers surface catalytic reactions. To investigate the negative effects of CO on the local structure of platinum metal nanoparticle catalysts during water formation, in situ and time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses were conducted. The results revealed that the Pt-Fe/CZY catalyst exhibited notable hydrogen oxidation activity even in the presence of CO. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the combined effects of Pt-Fe alloy composition and CZY support materials.

The catalyst called a Passive Autocatalytic Recombiner (PAR) is required to have robustness that can maintain its activity for more than 30 years in an environment where temperature, humidity, gas concentration, etc. cannot be controlled. Here, it is expected that "An Intelligent Catalyst" for automotive emissions control exhibits excellent performance even in such a harsh environment. The intelligent catalyst is the nanostructure designed perovskite catalyst that has the rejuvenating function instead of preventing aging. The authors emphasize that the technology developed as a catalyst for automobiles is expected to be useful not only in other industries but also as a relief technology from the national crisis.

A Concept of intermediate heat exchanger for high-temperature gas reactor hydrogen and power cogeneration system

A new conceptual design of intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) is proposed for application to the gas turbine high temperature reactor system (GTHTR300C) which is being developed by JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Agency). The GTHTR300C cogenerates hydrogen using the iodine-sulfur (IS) hydrogen production process and electric power using gas turbine. The IHX is used to transport high temperature heat from the nuclear reactor to the hydrogen plant. The IHX proposed in this paper is a horizontal design as opposed to conventional vertical design. Therefore, JAEA investigated the advantage of the horizontal IHX and the economic evaluation when scaling up to GTHTR300C. To meet the performance requirement, both thermal and structural designs were performed to select heat transfer tube length, tube bundle diameter, tube header arrangement, and tube and shell support in a horizontal pressure vessel. It is found that the length of the heat exchanger tube can be shortened and the superalloy-made center pipe structure can be eliminated, which results in reducing the quantity of construction steel by about 30%. Furthermore, the maximum stress concentration in the tubes is found to be significantly reduced such that the creep strength to withstand continuous operation is extended to 40 years, equaling the nuclear reactor life time, without replacement.

200GeVと62.4GeVでの陽子陽子の中心衝突からの$$pi, K, p$$の横運動量分布及び収量をRHICのPHENIX実験によって測定した。それぞれエネルギーでの逆スロープパラメーター、平均横運動量及び単位rapidityあたりの収量を求め、異なるエネルギーでの他の測定結果と比較する。また$$m_T$$$$x_T$$スケーリングのようなスケーリングについて示して陽子陽子衝突における粒子生成メカニズムについて議論する。さらに測定したスペクトルを二次の摂動QCDの計算と比較する。

重いフレーバーのメソンの崩壊からの電子の測定は、このメソンの収量が金金衝突では陽子陽子に比べて抑制されていることを示している。われわれはこの研究をさらに進めて二つの粒子の相関、つまり重いフレーバーメソンの崩壊からの電子と、もう一つの重いフレーバーメソンあるいはジェットの破片からの荷電ハドロン、の相関を調べた。この測定は重いクォークとクォークグルオン物質の相互作用についてのより詳しい情報を与えるものである。われわれは特に金金衝突では陽子陽子に比べて反対側のジェットの形と収量が変化していることを見いだした。
