Mean-field study of the Bose-Hubbard model in the Penrose lattice

We examine the Bose-Hubbard model in the Penrose lattice based on inhomogeneous mean-field theory. Since the averaged coordination number in the Penrose lattice is four, the mean-field phase diagram consisting of the Mott insulator (MI) and superfluid (SF) phase is similar to that of the square lattice. However, the spatial distribution of the Bose condensate in the SF phase is significantly different from uniform distribution in the square lattice. We find a fractal structure in its distribution near the MI-SF phase boundary. The emergence of the fractal structure is a consequence of the cooperative effect between quasiperiodicity in the Penrose lattice and criticality at the phase transition.

We investigate the dynamical spin and charge structure factors of the $$t$$-$$t'$$-$$J$$ four-leg ladder by using dynamical density-matrix renormalization group. The dynamical charge structure factor along the momentum direction from $$q=(0,0)$$ to $$(pi,0)$$ clearly shows low-energy excitations corresponding to the stripe order in hole doping. On the other hand, the stripe order weakens in electron doping, resulting in less low-energy excitations in the charge channel. In spin channel, we find incommensurate spin excitations near $$q=(pi,pi)$$ forming a hour-glass behavior in hole doping, while in electron doping we find clearly spin-wave-like dispersions starting from $$q=(pi,pi)$$. Along the $$(0,0)$$-$$(pi,0)$$ direction, the spin excitations are strongly influenced by the stripes in hole doping, resulting in two branches that form a discontinuous behavior in the dispersion. In contrast, the electron-doped systems show a downward shift in energy toward $$(pi,0)$$.

Magnetic phase diagram of a frustrated spin ladder

Frustrated spin ladders show magnetization plateaux depending on the rung-exchange interaction and frustration defined by the ratio of first and second neighbor exchange interactions in each chain. This paper reports on its magnetic phase diagram. Using the variational matrix-product state method, we accurately determine phase boundaries. Several kinds of magnetization plateaux are induced by the frustration and the strong correlation among quasiparticles on a lattice. The appropriate description of quasiparticles and their relevant interactions are changed by a magnetic field. We find that the frustration differentiates the triplet quasiparticle from the single tone in kinetic energy.

Theoretical study of electronic states and excitation spectra in Ni-substituted cuprates

銅酸化物高温超伝導物質における不純物置換効果の研究がこれまで世界中で数多く研究されている。Ni不純物置換に対してキャリアがNi不純物近傍へ局在化するといった興味深い現象が実験及び理論的研究により明らかになってきている。本研究ではクラスター計算によって、不純物濃度に比べてホール濃度が高い場合の電子状態を議論し、共鳴非弾性X線散乱スペクトルの予見を行った。

Spin-spin correlation enhanced by impurities in a frustrated two-leg spin ladder

We theoretically study a spin-spin correlation enhanced by non-magnetic impurities in a frustrated two-leg spin ladder. The frustration is introduced by the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction in the leg direction in the antiferromagnetic two-leg spin ladder. The spin-spin correlation function around impurity site is calculated by the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We find that the spin-spin correlation is enhanced around impurity site with the wavenumber reflecting the frustration. As increasing the frustration, the wavenumber is shifted from commensurate to incommensurate. We discuss several experimental results on BiCu$$_{2}$$PO$$_{6}$$ in the light of our theory.

High-energy spin and charge excitations in electron-doped copper oxide superconductors

We combine X-ray and neutron inelastic scattering measurements to track the doping dependence of both spin and charge excitations in electron-doped materials. Copper $$L_3$$ resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectra show that magnetic excitations shift to higher energy upon doping. Their dispersion becomes steeper near the magnetic zone center and they deeply mix with charge excitations, indicating that electrons acquire a highly itinerant character in the doped metallic state. Moreover, above the magnetic excitations, an additional dispersing feature is observed near the $$Gamma$$-point, and we ascribe it to particle-hole charge excitations. These properties are in stark contrast with the more localized spin-excitations (paramagnons) recently observed in hole-doped compounds even at high doping-levels.

クロム金属は代表的な多軌道反強磁性金属である。われわれは多軌道ハバード模型の平均刃近似により整合反強磁性クロムのバンド構造と状態密度を数値的に求め、その結果をもとに光学伝導度を計算した。得られた結果は実験データと対応することがわかり、このことからわれわれの模型化が妥当であることがわかった。

Spin dynamics and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering in chromium with commensurate spin-density wave order

多軌道系反強磁性金属であるクロム金属のスピン励起スペクトルと共鳴非弾性X線散乱スペクトルを理論的に予見した。スペクトルの計算に際し、多軌道ハバード模型に対する平均場近似及び乱雑位相近似を行い、またX線散乱プロセスに対して高速衝突近似を行った。その結果、スピン励起に関しては、0.6eV以上で集団励起であるマグノン励起がほとんど強度を持たず、代わりに個別励起のエネルギー的に広がったスペクトルが支配的になることがわかった。

Effects of frustration on magnetic excitations in a two-leg spin-ladder system

高温超伝導体と関連して、低次元量子スピン系の研究が近年盛んに行われている。この新しい候補物質として、BiCu$$_{2}$$PO$$_{6}$$が注目を集めている。この物質は、梯子系高温超伝導体と非常に近い構造を持つことが分かっているが、古典的な幾つかの状態が相競合するような、幾何学的フラストレーションを持つという点で異なる。また、この模型は別の見方をすれば、フラストレーションを持った1次元鎖に、鎖間相互作用を導入したものに対応する。本研究では、上記の2つの視点に基づいて、磁気的な励起スペクトルの解析を行った。特に、梯子系の素励起に与えるフラストレーションの効果について詳細な議論を行った。この結果と中性子散乱実験を比較することで、BiCu$$_{2}$$PO$$_{6}$$の低温状態が明らかになると期待される。

Inelastic X-ray scattering studies of electronic excitations

Inelastic X-ray Scattering (IXS) has developed as one of the most powerful momentum-resolved spectroscopies. Especially in the last decade, it achieved significant progress by utilizing brilliant X-rays from third generation synchrotron radiation facilities. Simultaneously, theoretical efforts have been made to predict or interpret the experimental spectra. One of the scientific fields studied intensively by means of IXS is strongly correlated electron systems, where the interplay of charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom determines their physical properties. IXS can provide a new insight into electron dynamics of the systems through the observation of charge, spin, and orbital excitations. Focusing on the momentum-resolved electronic excitations in strongly correlated electron systems, we review IXS studies and present capabilities of IXS for the study of dynamics of materials.

La$$_{2-x}$$Sr$$_x$$NiO$$_4$$はホール・ドープしたS=1の二次元反強磁性絶縁体であり、銅酸化物高温超伝導体の参照物質として調べられてきている、この物質において、光学伝導度では$$x$$=0の時電荷移動型ギャップが観測され、ホール・ドープによってギャップ内にエネルギー的に広がった吸収スペクトルが現れる。われわれは以前に光学伝導度のギャップ内に現れるスペクトルが、Niサイトにおける高スピン状態から低スピン状態への励起であることを示したが、共鳴非弾性X線散乱においても光学伝導度と同様な励起が現れるかどうかが興味深い。そこで本研究では、光学伝導度の計算と同じく、$$e_g$$軌道の2バンド・ハバード模型に対する数値的厳密対角化法によって、共鳴非弾性X線散乱スペクトルを計算し、その励起の起源を議論する。

Electronic excitations around the substituted atom in La$$_2$$Cu$$_{1-y}$$N$$_y$$O$$_4$$ as seen via resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

We perform a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of Ni-substituted La$$_2$$CuO$$_4$$ and Cu-substituted La$$_2$$NiO$$_4$$.Resonantly enhanced charge-transfer excitations are successfully observed by tuning the incident photon energy to the $$K$$-edge of the substituted element. These excitations display a very weak momentum dependence, evidencing their local character. We find a shift in the energy of the onset edge of these features compared with the non-substituted compounds La$$_2$$CuO$$_4$$ and La$$_2$$NiO$$_4$$. This shift is quantitatively reproduced by exact diagonalization calculations of the RIXS spectra. RIXS is shown to be a powerful tool to probe the electronic states of substituted elements and to understand their interaction with surrounding atoms.

Relaxation dynamics of photocarrieres in one-dimensional Mott insulators coupled to phonons

We examine recombination processes of photocarriers in one-dimensional Mott insulators coupled to phonons. Performing density matrix renormalization group calculations, we find that, even for small electron, phonon coupling, many phonons are generated dynamically, which cause initial relaxation process after the irradiation. At the same time, spin charge coupling coming from mixing of high- and low-energy states by the irradiation is suppressed. We discuss differences between Mott and band insulators in terms of relaxation dynamics.

Nonequilibrium interplay between charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom on a square lattice is studied for a single charge carrier doped in the $$t$$-$$J$$-Holstein model. In the presence of a static electric field we calculate the quasistationary state. With increasing electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling the carrier mobility decreases; however, we find increased steady state current due to e-ph coupling in the regime of negative differential resistance. We explore the distribution of absorbed energy between the spin and the phonon subsystem. For model parameters as relevant for cuprates, the majority of the gained energy flows into the spin subsystem.

梯子格子系銅酸化物の銅K吸収端共鳴非弾性X線散乱スペクトルを、数値的厳密対角化法を用いて計算した。これまでに梯子格子系における散乱スペクトルの運動量依存性に、基底状態におけるスピン・シングレット状態の形成状態と関係していることが示唆された。一方で梯子の対角方向に沿ったホールの飛び移りの符号により、スピン・シングレット状態の形成強度が劇的に変化することが明らかになっている。そこで本研究では共鳴非弾性X線散乱スペクトルの形状とスピン・シングレット状態の関係をより明確にするために、梯子の対角方向に沿ったホールの飛び移りを加えてスペクトルの変化を調べた。その結果、実際に状態とスペクトルが関係することを明らかにした。

Substitution of a specific element for a component is often used to elucidate its role in the superconductors. For a complete understanding of the substitution effect not only on the superconductivity but also on the electronic states, element-selective experiments are required. In this respect, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has proven to be a powerful experimental technique enabling element-selective diagnosis of charge excitations. By tuning the incident photon energy to a given absorption edge of the element, the excitations involving the element are resonantly enhanced. In addition, RIXS has the advantage that momentum dependence can be measured. Using RIXS, we have measured the electronic excitations at the substituting sites in La$$_2$$Cu$$_{0.95}$$Ni$$_{0.05}$$O$$_4$$ and La$$_2$$Ni$$_{0.95}$$Cu$$_{0.05}$$O$$_4$$. Near the absorption edge of the substituting element, namely the Ni $$K$$-edge for La$$_2$$Cu$$_{0.95}$$Ni$$_{0.05}$$O$$_4$$ and the Cu $$K$$-edge for La$$_2$$Ni$$_{0.95}$$Cu$$_{0.05}$$O$$_4$$, charge transfer excitations from the 2$$p$$ level of neighboring oxygen to the upper Hubbard band of the substituted Ni/Cu are observed. Experimental spectra are qualitatively reproduced by a theoretical calculation based on a $$d$$-$$p$$ model.

Temperature dependence of the electronic structure of Sr$$_{14}$$Cu$$_{24}$$O$$_{41}$$ studied by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

Sr$$_{14-x}$$Ca$$_x$$Cu$$_{24}$$O$$_{41}$$ (SCCO), which is composed of two-leg ladders and edge-sharing chains, is the first superconducting cuprate without CuO$$_2$$ planes. By substituting Ca for Sr, holes are transferred from the chains to the ladders. It was recently shown that charge ordering (CO) along the leg direction in the ladder occurs at $$x=0$$ and the periodicity is five times the unit length along the c axis. In order to investigate the electronic excitations associated with the CO, we carried out resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments for SCCO ($$x=0,6$$). Cu-$$K$$ RIXS can directly probe the momentum-dependent electronic excitations related to the Cu site, which are resonantly enhanced by tuning the incident photon energy to the Cu $$K$$-edge. We measured the q dependence of the intraband excitations, which is associated with the dynamics of doped holes in the Zhang-Rice singlet band. The intensity is enhanced at the momentum $${bf q}=(q_{rm rung},q_{rm leg})=(0,2pi/5)$$ corresponding to the periodicity of the CO in $$x=0$$, while the temperature dependence of the enhancement is different for $$x=0$$ and $$x=6$$. We discuss the relationship between our experimental results and the occurrence of the CO.

Enhanced pairing correlations near oxygen dopants in cuprate superconductors

Recent experiments on Bi-based cuprate superconductors have revealed an unexpected enhancement of the pairing correlations near the interstitial oxygen dopant ions. Here we propose a possible mechanism - based on local screening effects - by which the oxygen dopants do modify the electronic parameters within the CuO$$_{2}$$ planes and strongly increase the super exchange coupling J. This enhances the spin pairing effects locally and may explain the observed spatial variations of the density of states and the pairing gap.

Effect of Fermi surface topology on inter-layer magnetoresistance in layered multiband systems; Application to LaFeAsO$$_{1-x}$$F$$_x$$

In layered single band systems, the interlayer conductivity depends on the orientation of the in-plane magnetic field and takes maximum values when the magnetic field is perpendicular to flat regions of the Fermi surface. Extending this known results to multi-band systems, we propose an experiment to extract information about their Fermi surface topology. We discuss application of the formula to a FeAs-based superconductor, LaFeAsO$$_{1-x}$$F$$_x$$. We show that the magnetically ordered state in the parent compound is clearly distinguished from the paramagnetic state by the oscillation period in the interlayer conductivity. We demonstrate that evolution of the Fermi surface topology by changing the doping concentration is reflected to the interlayer conductivity oscillation patterns.
