Extraordinary hardening-by-annealing in bulk ultrafine grained magnesium with ultra-low yttrium addition

Hall-Petch law fails when grains smaller than a critical size, due to grain boundary (GB) kinetics-dominated plasticity. To enhance strength, improving GB stability is a consideration. However, this often requires a significant amount of alloying elements, posing resource challenges. Additionally, practical fabrication of extremely fine grains is still an issue. In our study, we firstly demonstrate a remarkable hardening-by-annealing phenomenon in magnesium (Mg) with relatively large grain sizes of 0.2-0.5 $$mu$$m, even with ultra-low yttrium (Y) addition. We reveal that annealing induces GB segregation/relaxation, effectively limiting the GB kinetics and promoting dislocation-dominated plasticity. Furthermore, the accompanying dislocation annihilation hinders deformation due to dislocation scarcity. As a result, we discovered extraordinary hardening in bulk ultrafine grained Mg-Y ultra-dilute alloy. This work offers a promising avenue for developing energy- and resource-efficient sustainable Mg alloys with superior mechanical properties.

Competition between mass-symmetric and asymmetric fission modes in $$^{258}$$Md produced in the $$^{4}$$He + $$^{254}$$Es reaction

In spontaneous fission (SF) it is found that the mass-asymmetric fission of well-known actinides suddenly changes to the symmetric fission when nucleus has a mass number $$A_{c}$$ larger than 257. We have measured for the first time fission-fragment mass and total-kinetic-energy (TKE) distributions of the excited compound nucleus $$^{258}$$Md, populated in the reaction $$^{4}$$He+$$^{254}$$Es, using the rare isotope $$^{254}$$Es with a short half-life, $$T_{1/2}$$=276 days. The fission of $$^{258}$$Md can be interpreted as involving 3 fission modes: an mass-asymmetric mode and two modes of mass-asymmetric fissions, the latter two are manifested by different TKE values. Predominantly symmetric fission was obtained at the excitation energy of 15.0 MeV. By increasing the energy to 18.0 MeV, the asymmetric fission mode dominates. Both such a strong change of fission modes within a small increase of excitation energy and the enhancement of asymmetric split are new phenomena in fission.

Nonreciprocal resonant surface acoustic wave absorption in Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$

Ferrimagnet insulator yttrium iron garnet (Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$, YIG) attracts much interest in magnonics and microwave applications due to its relatively low magnetic damping and long magnon relaxation time. The magnetoelastic interaction between YIG magnetization and surface acoustic waves (SAWs) has been the basis in the development of acoustic-surface-wave isolators. However, the investigation of SAW-driven magnetic resonance in YIG is limited by the low compatibility of YIG and SAW devices. In this work, we demonstrate nonreciprocal resonant SAW absorption in an on-chip YIG-SAW device integrated by the focused ion beam technique. We observed two distinct SAW absorption signals attributed to the perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSW). Furthermore, the large observed nonreciprocity is compared to theoretical predictions incorporating the influence of asymmetric surface conditions on PSSW mode profiles and nonreciprocal magnon-SAW coupling. The strongly nonreciprocal SAW attenuation in YIG offers a promising opportunity for highly efficient rf signal processing technologies.

Enhanced cryogenic mechanical properties of heterostructured CrCoNi multicomponent alloy; Insights from ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction

Heterostructured materials (HSMs) improve the strength-ductility trade-off of alloys, but their cryogenic performance under real-time deformation is unclear. We studied heterostructured CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy via ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction at 77 K and 293 K. A significant mechanical mismatch between fine and coarse grains led to an exceptional yield strength of 918 MPa at 293 K, increasing to 1244 MPa at 77 K with a uniform elongation of 34%. This strength-ductility synergy at 77 K is attributed to high dislocation pile-up density, increased planar faults, and martensitic transformation. Compared to homogeneous alloys, HSMs show promise for enhancing cryogenic mechanical performance in medium-/high-entropy alloys.

Gamma-ray spectroscopy of $$^{55}$$Sc

理化学研究所のRIビームファクトリーにて$$^{56}$$Sc($$p$$,$$pn$$)$$^{55}$$Sc反応によって$$^{55}$$Scの励起状態を生成し、そこからの脱励起ガンマ線の放出を測定することによってその原子核のエネルギー準位を構築した。1510(30)keVの励起準位など、いくつかの新しい準位を見つけた。その結果を大規模殻模型計算の結果と比較し、ガンマ崩壊様式を考慮した結果、1510(30)keVの準位は$$7/2^-$$の可能性が高いことがわかった。

JSNS$$^2$$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that searches for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $$bar{nu}_{mu} to bar{nu}_{e}$$ appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. The JSNS$$^2$$ experiment performed data taking from 2021. In this manuscript, a study of the accidental background is presented. The rate of the accidental background is (9.29$${pm}$$0.39)$${times}$$10$$^{-8}$$ / spill with 0.75 MW beam power and comparable to the expected number of signal events.

Observation of gamma rays up to 320 TeV from the middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula HESS J1849-000

Gamma rays from HESS J1849-000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $$4.0sigma$$ and $$4.4sigma$$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively. The energy spectrum measured between 40 TeV $$<$$ E $$<$$ 320 TeV for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of dN/dE = $$(2.86pm1.44)times10^{-16}(E/40mathrm{TeV})^{-2.24pm0.41} mathrm{TeV^{-1} cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV to sub-PeV ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, Inverse Compton Scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849-0001, but the scenario requires sophisticated theoretical modeling. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can be simply modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $$E_{mathrm{p,cut}}$$ is estimated at $$log _{10}(E /mathrm{TeV})=3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study proposes that HESS J1849-000 should be further investigated as a new candidate for a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, or "PeVatron".

Excited states in $$^{78}$$Cu were observed for the first time following the $$beta$$ decay of $$^{78}$$Ni created by in-flight fission of $$^{238}$$U. Based on the coincidences with the observed $$gamma$$-ray transitions, a level scheme comprising eight excited states was constructed, with tentative spin assignments for 5 of them. In addition to the $$gamma$$-decaying states, an isomeric state with a lifetime of 3.8(4) ms was also found to decay by internal conversion.

Observation of a threshold cusp at the $$Lambdaeta$$ threshold in the $$pK^-$$ mass spectrum with $$Lambda_c^+ to pK^-pi^+$$ decays

We observe a narrow peaking structure in the $$pK^{-}$$ invariant-mass spectrum near the $$Lambdaeta$$ threshold. The peak is clearly seen in 1.5 million events of $$Lambda_{c}^{+} rightarrow p K^{-} pi^{+}$$ decay using the $$980~{rm fb^{-1}}$$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $$e^{+}e^{-}$$ collider. We try two approaches to explain this structure: as a new resonance and as a cusp at the $$Lambdaeta$$ threshold. The best fit is obtained with a coherent sum of a Flatt$$rm{acute{e}}$$ function and a constant background amplitude with the $$chi^2/{rm n.d.f}=257/243$$ ($$p = 0.25$$), while the fits to Breit-Wigner functions are unfavored by more than 7$$sigma$$. The best fit explains the structure as a cusp at the $$Lambdaeta$$ threshold, and the obtained parameters are consistent with the known properties of $$Lambda(1670)$$. The observation gives the first identification of a threshold cusp in hadrons from the spectrum shape.

Chiral symmetry restoration at high matter density observed in pionic atoms

According to quantum chromodynamics, vacuum is not an empty space, because it is filled with quark-antiquark pairs. The pair has the same quantum numbers as the vacuum and forms a condensate because the strong interaction of the quantum chromodynamics is too strong to leave the vacuum empty. This quark-antiquark condensation, the chiral condensate, breaks the chiral symmetry of the vacuum. The expectation value of the chiral condensate is an order parameter of the chiral symmetry, which is expected to decrease at high temperatures or high matter densities where the chiral symmetry is partially restored. Head-on collisions of nuclei at ultra-relativistic energies have explored the high-temperature regime, but experiments at high densities are rare. Here we measure the spectrum of pionic $$^{121}$$Sn atoms and study the interaction between the pion and the nucleus. We find that the expectation value of the chiral condensate is reduced at finite density compared to the value in vacuum. The reduction is linearly extrapolated to the nuclear saturation density and indicates that the chiral symmetry is partially restored due to the extremely high density of the nucleus.

First measurement of differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries for photoproduction of the $$f_0$$ (980) meson decaying into $$pi^0 pi^0$$ at $$E_gamma <$$ 2.4 GeV

For the first time, differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries were measured for the reaction $$gamma p to f_0 (980) p to pi^0 pi^0 p$$ by using a linearly polarized photon beam up to 2.4 GeV and a liquid hydrogen target. The $$f_0$$ (980) photoproduction signal was clearly observed owing to the absence of contributions from vector-meson photoproduction. The results indicate the $$t$$-channel exchange of vector mesons as a mechanism of the $$f_0$$ (980) photoproduction at $$E_gamma$$ approximate to 2.1 GeV, putting constraints on the nature of $$f_0$$ (980).

Recent progress and future prospects of hyperon nucleon scattering experiment

A new hyperon-proton scattering experiment, dubbed J-PARC E40, was performed to measure differential cross sections of the $$Sigma^+ p$$, $$Sigma^- p$$ elastic scatterings and the $$Sigma^- p to Lambda n$$ scattering by identifying a lot of $$Sigma $$ particles in the momentum ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 GeV/$$c$$ produced by the $$pi^{pm}p to K^+Sigma^{pm}$$ reactions. We successfully measured the differential cross sections of these three channels with a drastically improved accuracy with a fine angular step. These new data will become important experimental constraints to improve the theories of the two-body baryon-baryon interactions. Following this success, we proposed a new experiment to measure the differential cross sections and spin observables by using a highly polarized $$Lambda$$ beam for providing quantitative information on the $$Lambda N$$ interaction. The results of three $$Sigma p$$ channels and future prospects of the $$Lambda p$$ scattering experiment are described.

Composition-tunable magnon-polaron anomalies in spin Seebeck effects in epitaxial Bi$$_x$$Y$$_{3-x}$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ films

We have investigated hybridized magnon-phonon excitation (magnon polarons) in spin Seebeck effects (SSEs) in Bi$$_x$$Y$$_{3-x}$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ (BixY$$_{3-x}$$xIG; x=0, 0.5, and 0.9) films with Pt contact. We observed sharp peak structures in the magnetic field H; dependence of the longitudinal SSE (LSSE) voltages, which appear when the phonon dispersions are tangential to the magnon dispersion curve in BixY$$_{3-x}$$IG. By increasing the Bi amount x, the peak fields in the LSSE shift toward lower H values due to the reduction of the sound velocities in BixY$$_{3-x}$$IG. We also measured the SSE in a nonlocal configuration and found that magnon-polaron anomalies appear with different signs and intensities. Our result shows composition-tunability of magnon-polaron anomalies and provides a clue to further unravel the physics of magnon-polaron SSEs.

Search for the decay $$B_s^0 to eta^prime K_S^0$$

We report the results of the first search for the decay $$B_s^0 to eta^prime K_S^0$$ using $$121.4,{rm fb}^{-1}$$ of data collected at the $$Upsilon(5S)$$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $$e^+ e^-$$ collider. We observe no signal and set a 90% confidence-level upper limit of $$8.16 times 10^{-6}$$ on the $$B_s^0 to eta^prime K_S^0$$ branching fraction.

Fine structure in the $$alpha$$ decay of the 8$$^{+}$$ isomer in $$^{216,218}$$U

The extremely neutron-deficient even-even uranium isotopes $$^{216,218}$$U were produced in the complete-fusion reactions induced by impinging $$^{40}$$Ar and $$^{40}$$Ca ions on $$^{180,182,184}$$W targets. Fusion evaporation residues were separated in flight by the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS (Spectrometer for Heavy Atoms and Nuclear Structure) and subsequently identified using the recoil-$$alpha$$-correlation method. In this paper, we report on new $$alpha$$-decay activities with $$E_{alpha} = 10163(27)$$ keV for $$^{216}$$U and $$E_{alpha} = 10073(16)$$ keV for $$^{218}$$U, which decay from the 8$$^{+}$$ isomeric states of $$^{216,218}$$U into the 2$$^{+}$$ states of their daughter nuclei $$^{212,214}$$Th, respectively. The new results extend the systematics of the $$alpha$$-decay fine structure for the $$N$$ = 124 and 126 even-even isotones.

$$phi$$ meson production in $$p$$$$+$$Al, $$p$$$$+$$Au, $$d$$$$+$$Au, and $$^3$$He$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV

Small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the $$phi$$ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured $$phi$$ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems $$p$$$$+$$Al, $$p$$$$+$$Au, and $$^3$$He$$+$$Au, as well as $$d$$$$+$$Au, at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. Comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of $$phi$$ mesons at midrapidity may be different in $$p$$$$+$$Al versus $$p/d/$$$$^3$$He$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in $$p/d/$$$$^3$$He$$+$$Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in $$p$$$$+$$Al collisions.

Search for charged lepton flavor violating decays of $$Upsilon(1S)$$

We present a search for the charged lepton-flavor-violating decays $$Upsilon(1S)rightarrowellell^prime$$ and radiative charged lepton-flavour-violating decays $$Upsilon(1S)rightarrowgammaellell^prime$$ [$$ell,ell^prime = e, mu, tau$$] using the 158 million $$Upsilon(2S)$$ sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. This search uses $$Upsilon(1S)$$ mesons produced in $$pi^+pi^-Upsilon(1S)$$ transitions. We do not find any significant signal, so we provide upper limits on the branching fractions at the 90% confidence level.

An Improved search for the electric dipole moment of the $$tau$$ lepton

We report a measurement of the electric dipole moment of the $$tau$$ lepton ($$d_tau$$) using an 833~fb$$^{-1}$$ data sample collected near the $$Upsilon(4S)$$ resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $$e^+ e^-$$ collider. Using an optimal observable method, we obtain the real and imaginary parts of $$d_tau$$ as $${rm Re}(d_tau) = (-0.62 pm 0.63) times 10^{-17} ~e{rm cm}$$ and $${rm Im}(d_tau) = (-0.40 pm 0.32) times 10^{-17} ~e{rm cm}$$, respectively. These results are consistent with null electric dipole moment at the present level of experimental sensitivity and improve the sensitivity by about a factor of three.

Search for $$B^0$$ meson decays into $$Lambda$$ and missing energy with a hadronic tagging method at Belle

We present a search for the decays of $$B^0$$ mesons into a final state containing a $$Lambda$$ baryon and missing energy. These results are obtained from a 711 fb$$^{-1}$$ data sample that contains 772 $$times$$10$$^{6}$$ $$B$$$$overline{B}$$ pairs and was collected near the $$Upsilon(4S)$$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $$e^+e^-$$ collider. We use events in which one $$B$$ meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode and require the remainder of the event to consist of only a single $$Lambda$$. No evidence for these decays is found and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range 2.1-3.8 $$times$$ 10$$^{-5}$$. This measurement provides the world's most restrictive limits, with implications for baryogenesis and dark matter production.
