The Role of collision ionization of K-shell ions in nonequilibrium plasmas produced by the action of super strong, ultrashort PW-class laser pulses on micron-scale argon clusters with intensity up to 5 $$times$$ 10$$^{21}$$ W/cm$$^{2}$$

Skobelev, I. Yu.*; Ryazantsev, S. N.*; Kulikov, R. K.*; Sedov, M. V.*; Filippov, E. D.*; Pikuz, S. A.*; Asai, Takafumi*; Kanasaki, Masato*; Yamauchi, Tomoya*; Jinno, Satoshi; et al.

It is challenging to clearly distinguish the impacts of the optical field and collisional ionization in the evolution of the charge state of a plasma produced when matter interacts with high-intensity laser pulses. In this work, time-dependent calculations of plasma kinetics are used to show that it is possible only when low-density gaseous targets with sufficiently small clusters are used. In the case of Ar plasma, the upper limit of the cluster radius was estimated to be $$R_0 = 0.1 mu$$m.

Simultaneous determination of the U-Pb age of zircon and concentration of titanium in a single analysis spot, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with laser ablation sample introduction, produces paired age and temperature data of zircon crystallisation, potentially revealing time-temperature ($$t-T$$) histories for evolved magma. The Kurobegawa granite, central Japan, contains abundant mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs). We applied this method to evaluate MMEs and their host (enclosing) granites. Cooling behaviour common to both MMEs and host rocks was found between 1.5 and 0.5 Ma. Rapid cooling from the zircon crystallisation temperature to the closure temperature of biotite K-Ar system was within $$sim$$1 million year. Combining the obtained $$t-T$$ paths of MMEs and host rocks with petrological information can provide insights into magma chamber processes. This suggests that MME flotation, migration, and spread through the magma chamber ceased at 1.5-0.5 Ma, indicating the emplacement age of the Kurobegawa granitic pluton, as no large-scale reheating episodes have occurred since then.

The decommissioning is currently in progress at the prototype fast breeder reactor Monju. Fuel assemblies will be taken out of its core for the first step of the great task. Fuel assemblies stand on their own spike plugged into a socket on the core support plate and support with adjacent assemblies through their housing pads each other, resulting in steady core structure. For this reason, some substitutive assemblies are necessary for the purpose of discharging the fuel assemblies of the core. Monju side commissioned, therefore, Plutonium Fuel Development Center to manufacture the substitutive assemblies and the Center accepted it. This report gives descriptions of design, manufacture, and shipment in regard to the substitutive assemblies.

To compare and assess the creep-fatigue life evaluation methods for stress concentration point, a series of creep-fatigue test was performed with notched specimens made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel. Mechanical creep-fatigue tests and thermal creep-fatigue test were performed. A series of Finite Element Analysis was also carried out to predict the number of cycles to failure by the several creep-fatigue life evaluation methods. Then these predictions were compared with the test results. Several types of evaluation methods such are stress redistribution locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up method and the methods described in the JSME FRs code were applied. Through the comparisons, it was appeared that SRL method gave rational conservative prediction of the creep-fatigue life for all conditions tested in this study. The JSME FRs code gave an evaluation over 70 times conservative lives comparing with the test results.

To clarify the failure mode of a semispherical tubesheet structure originally designed for SG in the JSFR, a cyclic thermal loading test was performed using a tubesheet model test structure. The tubesheet model made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel was subjected to 1,873 cycles of severe thermal transient loads using a large-scale sodium loop, in which sodium heated to 600$$^{circ}$$C and 250$$^{circ}$$C was flowed repeatedly with periods for each transient of 2 and 1 h, respectively. After the test, the test model was inspected by PT. Then, observation using a SEM and hardness testing were performed. A thermal-hydraulic analysis was also performed to validate the measured temperature history during the thermal transient. Through these examinations and evaluation with thermal-hydraulic analysis, the manner of failure in the tubesheet under cyclic thermal loading is discussed.

In this study, the strength of a tubesheet test model simulating a semispherical tubesheet structure subjected to cyclic thermal transients was evaluated using the finite element analysis (FEA). A test model made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel was subjected to 1,873 cycles of severe thermal transient loading using a large-scale sodium loop, in which elevated-temperature sodium at 600$$^{circ}$$C and 250$$^{circ}$$C was flowed repeatedly and kept at the final temperature for 2 and 1 h, respectively. Heat transfer analysis and stress analysis were performed using the sodium temperature data measured during the test. Then, the elastic and inelastic stress analysis results were used to investigate the failure mechanism by creep-fatigue damage and evaluate the failure strength. The evaluation based on the results of inelastic analysis estimated the number of cycles to failure within a factor of 3.

JAEA has been performing dose rate mapping in air using a car-borne survey system KURAMA-II. The KURAMA system is a GPS-aided mobile radiation monitoring system that has been newly developed by Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute in response to the nuclear disaster. The KURAMA system is composed of an energy-compensated scintillation survey meter for measuring dose rate, electric device for controlling both the dose rates and the position data from a GPS module, a computer server for processing and analyzing data from KURAMA, and client PCs for providing for end users. The KURAMA-II has been improved in small-packaging, durability, and automated data transmission. In consequence, dose rate mapping in wide area has become possible in shorter period of time. This report describes the construction of KURAMA-II, its application and a suggestion of how to manage a large number of KURAMA-II.

To validate the failure mode and assess creep-fatigue damage evaluation, a thick cylinder test model made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel was subjected to 1,873 cycles of accelerated thermal transient loading using a large-scale sodium loop through which liquid sodium at 600$$^{circ}$$C and 250$$^{circ}$$C flowed repeatedly, with the period of each transient being 2 h and 1 h, respectively. After completion of the test, liquid penetrant testing, a surface observation and hardness testing were performed to characterize failure mode. Based on the finite element analysis, creep-fatigue life was evaluated by applying the JSME FRs code. The failure cycles evaluated by rules described in the JSME FRs code was shown to have a safety margin of greater than 300 times for this system.

To verify the methods of estimating strain range for discontinues structures, low cycle fatigue tests were carried out with notched specimens. All the specimens were made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo. Displacement control fatigue tests and thermal fatigue tests were performed by ordinary uni-axial push pull test machine and equipment generating the thermal gradient in the notched plate by induction heating. Elastic and inelastic finite element analysis were also performed to estimate strain range for predicting fatigue life. Then these predictions were compared with the test results. Several methods such as stress reduction locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up (SEF) method, Neuber's law and the procedures employed by elevated temperature design codes were applied. Through these comparisons, the applicability and conservativeness of these strain range estimation methods are discussed.

The effect of ratcheting deformation on fatigue and creep-fatigue life in Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel was investigated. Uniaxial fatigue and creep-fatigue testing with superimposed strain were performed to evaluate the effect of ratcheting deformation on the failure cycle. In the fatigue tests with superimposed strain at 550$$^{circ}$$C, slight reductions of failure lives were observed. All of the numbers of cycles to failure in the fatigue tests with superimposed strain were within a factor of 1.5 of that of the fatigue test without superimposed strain at 550$$^{circ}$$C. The apparent relationship between failure cycles and testing parameters was not observed. It was assumed that suppression of mean stress generation by cyclic softening reduces the effect of ratcheting strain. In the creep-fatigue tests with superimposed strain, test results indicated that the accumulated stain was negligible.

Effect of pre-strain and ratcheting strain on fatigue and creep-fatigue lives in Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel

Ando, Masanori; Isobe, Nobuhiro*; Date, Shingo*; Kikuchi, Koichi*; Enuma, Yasuhiro*

Zairyo, 61(4), p.377 - 384, 2012/04

The effect of ratcheting deformation and pre-strain on fatigue and creep-fatigue life in Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel was investigated. Uni-axial fatigue and creep-fatigue tests with pre-strain and progressive strain were performed to evaluate the effect of pre-strain and ratcheting strain on the failure cycle. In the fatigue tests with pre-strain, failure lives were not declined. In the fatigue tests with progressive strain, slight reductions of failure lives were observed, however, they were within a factor of 1.5 of the failure life in normal fatigue test. In the creep-fatigue tests with progressive strain, the same conclusion of the fatigue tests was obtained. In both kinds of tests, maximum mean stresses during the tests were insignificant and/or generated in early cycle in the tests, and this character is considered as a reason of that the effect of ratcheting deformation on the fatigue and creep-fatigue lives are insignificant.

To verify the strain prediction method of discontinues structures at evaluated temperature, low cycle fatigue tests were carried out with notched specimens made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo. Deformation control fatigue tests and thermal fatigue tests were performed by ordinary uni-axial push-pull test machine and equipments generating the thermal gradient in the notched plate by induction heating. Crack initiation and propagation process during the fatigue test were observed by the digital micro-scope and replica method. Then the ranges of several strain predictions and estimations were compared with the test results. Stress Reduction Locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up method, Neuber's rule method and the methods supplied by elevated temperature design standards were applied. Through these results, the applicability and conservativeness of these strain prediction and estimation methods is discussed.
