The dismantling activities, which consist of removal of the glove panel, dismantling of the interior equipment and dismantling of the GB body and made up about 45% of the dismantling of the GB in GBDF, could be performed by remote control.

In order to prevent spread of contamination, glovebox dismantling activity is usually performed in a confined enclosure with personal radioactive protective equipment. Since large potion of these materials is made of vinyl acetate, there exist potential risks of fire, damage and injury to the environment and workers during the dismantling (cutting or melting) operation. It is therefore important to establish standard for proper use of equipment and hazard controls in such a specific environment. Working Group composed of Tokai Works and O-arai Works has examined and developed the operational standard for cutting work in glovebox dismantlement. The result is reflected to the Tokai Works Safety Operational Standard.

The glove-box dismantling facility in the Plutonium Fuel Production Facility is developed to dismantle after-service glove-boxes with remote-controlled devices such as an arm-type manipulator. An abrasive wheel cutter, which is used to size reduce the gloveboxes, generates sparks during operation. This dispersing spark was a problem from the fire prevention point of view. A suitable spark control measures for this operation were required. We developed panels to minimize spark dispersion, shields to prevent the income of sparks to the pre-filter, and incombustible pre-filters. The equipment was tested and effectiveness was confirmed. This report provides the results of these tests.

A huge volume of contaminated soils and wastes has been generated by off-site decontamination works in Fukushima and has been stored at temporary storage sites located near or at decontamination sites. The soils and wastes will be sequentially transferred to the Interim Storage Facility (ISF). According to a relevant law, the soils and wastes will be disposed at a final disposal site outside Fukushima within the next 30 years. The total volume of the contaminated soils which will be stored in the ISF is estimated to be up to 20 million cubic meters, thus reduction of its final disposal volume is vital to minimize various impacts of final disposal. In order to optimize final disposal outside Fukushima, the government will commence research and development on soil treatment techniques and use application of less-contaminated soil. As the one and only institution dedicated to the comprehensive R&D of nuclear energy-related technology in Japan, we will support the government efforts.

JAEA is working the decontamination activity for the environmental remediation of Fukushima. In this activity, I support the decontamination activity for local governments to devise a decontamination plan and actually decontaminate. In this report, 1 introduce the technical knowhow for the decontamination activity of a house.

JAEA supports the decontamination activity that the local government of Fukushima carries out. In addition, JAEA carries out instruction and the advice about decontamination. I explain the concrete-based decontamination method of the house which polluted by the accident of the nuclear power plant.
