The fifth version of Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, JENDL-5, was developed. JENDL-5 aimed to meet a variety of needs not only from nuclear reactors but also from other applications such as accelerators. Most of the JENDL special purpose files published so far were integrated into JENDL-5 with revisions. JENDL-5 consists of 11 sublibraries: (1) Neutron, (2) Thermal scattering law, (3) Fission product yield, (4) Decay data, (5) Proton, (6) Deuteron, (7) Alpha-particle, (8) Photonuclear, (9) Photo-atomic, (10) Electro-atomic, and (11) Atomic relaxation. The neutron reaction data for a large number of nuclei in JENDL-4.0 were updated ranging from light to heavy ones, including major and minor actinides which affect nuclear reactor calculations. In addition, the number of nuclei of neutron reaction data stored in JENDL-5 was largely increased; the neutron data covered not only all of naturally existing nuclei but also their neighbor ones with half-lives longer than 1 day. JENDL-5 included the originally evaluated data of thermal scattering law and fission product yield for the first time. Light charged-particle and photon induced reaction data were also included for the first time as the JENDL general purpose file.

A $$beta$$-decay unstable isomer with a half-life of 14.1 y at 264 keV in $$^{113}$$Cd is a branching point in the $$s$$ process, from which a weak branch reaches to a rare tin isotope $$^{115}$$Sn whose astrophysical origin has been an open problem. We have measured $$gamma$$ rays decaying to the ground state or the isomer in the $$^{112}$$Cd($$n,gamma$$)$$^{113}$$Cd reaction using high-energy resolution detectors in conjunction with a time-of-flight method. The relative production ratios of the isomer to the total following the neutron capture reactions on $$^{112}$$Cd have been evaluated in an energy region of up to 9 keV, and the spin and parity of several resonances have been assigned.

The independent and cumulative fission product yields (FPYs) and their covariance matrices were newly evaluated for thermal- and fast-neutron induced fission and spontaneous fission. We principally evaluated the independent isobaric charge distributions by taking account of available experimental data, especially putting emphasis on the shell and even-odd staggering in the fission yields by applying a Boltzmann factor including the shell and the pairing correction energies for the mass of fission products. Furthermore, the isomeric ratios of FPY were obtained by a systematic calculation based on the Hauser-Feshbach theory. Normalization of the FPY and associated covariance matrices of independent FPY were determined based on the generalised least-square method to make them consistent with important physical constraints. Especially, the FPYs were normalized to be consistent with the mass chain yield of England and Rider. The cumulative FPYs were calculated by following the relevant $$beta$$-decay chain by using the decay data from JENDL/DDF-2015. Finally, we verified the FPYs evaluated presently by considering experimental decay heats, delayed neutron yields, aggregate antineutrino spectra and results from post-irradiation examination. All the results have shown that the present set of FPYs were consistent with these data, and free from trivial problems present in JENDL/FPY-2011.

The validity of the multinucleon transfer (MNT) approach for deduction of fission barrier heights was investigated in an experiment carried out at the JAEA tandem accelerator facility. By using the $$^{18}$$O+$$^{237}$$Np reaction, fission barrier heights were inferred from fission probabilities of the nuclei $$^{239}$$Np and $$^{239,240}$$Pu produced in the $$2n$$ and $$pn/p2n$$ transfer channels, respectively. The deduced values of fission barriers agree well with the literature data, thus demonstrating the potential of the MNT reactions for obtaining fission-barrier data for nuclei not accessible for fission studies via neutron- or light charged particle-induced reactions.

We developed a four-dimensional (4D) Langevin model, which can treat the deformation of each fragment independently and applied it to low-energy fission of $$^{236}$$U, the compound system of the reaction n + $$^{235}$$U. The potential energy is calculated with the deformed two-center Woods-Saxon (TCWS) and the Nilsson-type potential with the microscopic energy corrections following the Strutinsky method and BCS pairing. The transport coefficients are calculated by macroscopic prescriptions. It turned out that the deformation for the light and heavy fragments behaves differently, showing a sawtooth structure similar to that of the neutron multiplicities of the individual fragments $$nu$$(A). Furthermore, the measured total kinetic energy TKE(A) and its standard deviation are reproduced fairly well by the 4D Langevin model based on the TCWS potential in addition to the fission fragment mass distributions. The developed model allows a multi-parametric correlation analysis among, e.g., the three key fission observables, mass, TKE, and neutron multiplicity, which should be essential to elucidate several longstanding open problems in fission such as the sharing of the excitation energy between the fragments.

We are promoting a study of fission using multi-nucleon transfer (MNT) reactions, where excited states in neutron-rich actinide nuclei, which cannot be accessed by particle capture and/or fusion reactions, are populated. Also, the excited states in the fissioning nucleus are widely populated by the MNT reactions, from which effects of excitation energy on fission properties can be investigated. Experiments were carried out at the JAEA tandem facility in Tokai, Japan. We studied reactions using the $$^{18}$$O beam and several actinide target nuclei such as $$^{232}$$Th, $$^{238}$$U, $$^{237}$$Np, $$^{248}$$Cm. Ejectile nucleus was identified by a silicon $$Delta$$E-E telescope to identify transfer channel and hence the compound nucleus. Fission fragments were detected by multi-wire proportional counters, and fission fragment mass distributions (FFMDs) were measured for each isotope. Measured FFMDs are reproduced by a calculation based on the fluctuation-dissipation model, and importance of multi-chance fission concept is investigated. Fission fragment angular distribution relative to the recoil direction suggested the increase of the spin of the fissioning nucleus with the number of transferred nucleons.

We are promoting a fission study using multi-nucleon transfer reactions, where excited states in neutron-rich actinide nuclei, which cannot be accessed by particle capture and/or fusion reactions, are populated. This allows us to study fission in the new region of chart of nuclei. Also, the excited states in the fissioning nucleus are widely populated in the reactions, thus the effects of excitation energy on fission can be investigated. Experiments were carried out at the JAEA tandem facility in Tokai, Japan. We studied reactions using the $$^{18}$$O beam ($$sim$$9MeV/u) and several actinide target nuclei such as $$^{232}$$Th, $$^{238}$$U, $$^{237}$$Np, $$^{248}$$Cm. Ejectile nuclei and thus the transfer channels were identified by a newly developed silicon $$Delta$$E-E detectors. The produced nuclei in one experiment reached more than fifteen. Fission fragment mass distributions (FFMDs) were measured for each isotopes. Measured FFMDs are reproduced by a calculation based on the fluctuation-dissipation model (Langevin-type calculation), where effects of multi-chance fission were included. We also started to measure the prompt neutrons accompanied by fission.

A theoretical study of $$beta$$ decay and delayed neutron has been carried out with a global $$beta$$-decay model: the gross theory. In a fissioning nucleus, neutrons are produced by the $$beta$$ decay of neutron-rich fission fragments. This is known as delayed neutrons. The gross theory of the $$beta$$ decay is based on a consideration of the sum rule of the $$beta$$-strength function, and gives reasonable results of $$beta$$-decay rates and delayed neutron in the entire nuclear mass region. We re-analyze and improve the theory on the strength functions and one-particle level densities. We focus on the spin-parity of decaying nucleus, and a hindrance treatment is introduced for the allowed transition on parity-mismatching nuclei. By using the improved gross theory, the ability of theoretically reproduction (and also prediction) on $$beta$$-decay rates, delayed-neutron emission probabilities, decay heat, will be discussed. In the process, we make a new code of the gross theory of $$beta$$- decay including the improved parts. We will show the code, which can be distributed for the nuclear data community.
