Transient ionization of the mesosphere was detected at around 65 km altitude during the isolated auroral expansion occurred at 2221-2226 UT on June 30, 2017. A general-purpose Monte Carlo particle transport code PHITS suggested that significant ionization is possible in the middle atmosphere due to auroral X-rays from the auroral electrons of $$<$$10 keV.

Toward the revision of JENDL-4.0, neutron cross sections of $$^{90,91,92,94,96}$$Zr were calculated in the energy range between 200 keV and 20 MeV. The calculation was carried out by using nuclear reaction models such as the spherical optical model, the distorted wave Born approximation, preequilibrium models, and the multi-step statistical model. The obtained results were almost consistent with the experimental data. The cross sections were also estimated for the metastable states which had not been considered in the JENDL-4.0 evaluation. The experimental cross sections for the reactions $$^{90}$$Zr$$(n,2n)$$$$^{89m}$$Zr, $$^{91}$$Zr$$(n,x)$$$$^{90m}$$Y and $$^{91}$$Zr$$(n,nalpha)$$$$^{87m}$$Sr were well reproduced by the present calculation.

The discussions on scientifically promising site for the geological disposal has been made at the council of studying group on techniques for geological disposal of radioactive wastes, which is held by Resources and Energy Agency. From the aspect of ensuring safety during the transportation of disposal waste, the coastal area is discussed to be a more suitable area. This report shows the result of the first year of this project as following items; Study on the state-of-art technology and remain tasks; laboratory tests on characterization of colloidal silica grout under sea water; Study on the development of grouting technology (design and the evaluation method of influence on the rock mass).

Evaluation of neutron resonance parameters for Zr isotopes

In the Nuclear Data Center of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA-NDC), we are engaged in the evaluation activity for the next version of the Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, JENDL-4.0. Zirconium is an important structural material in nuclear reactors, and zircaloys are being employed in fuel rods. Also, $$^{93}$$Zr is a long-lived fission product (LLFP) with a half-life of 1.61$$times$$10$$^{6}$$ years. At present we are investigating resonance parameters of Zr isotopes using experimental data published after the evaluation of JENDL-4.0. Through this work, a negative resonance of $$^{93}$$Zr in JENDL-4.0 was removed to reproduce the J-PARC/MLF/ANRRI experiment. The resonance parameters for other natural Zr isotopes will be altered by adopting the data obtained at CERN n-TOF experiments.

We revisit the delocalized character of the 4$$f$$ states of CeFe$$_2$$ in the ferromagnetically ordered phase by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with improved data quality using single crystals. Surprisingly, the Ce $$M_{4,5}$$ XMCD spectral shape changes significantly as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field, with no concomitant changes in the spectral shape of the Ce $$M_{4,5}$$ XAS as well as the Fe $$L_{2,3}$$ XAS and XMCD. This unusual behavior is characterized by the $$J=7/2$$ states in a 4$$f^1$$ configuration mixed into the $$J=5/2$$ ground state. Such extreme sensitivity of the Ce 4$$f$$ states to the external perturbations can be related to the magnetic instability toward an antiferromagnetic phase in CeFe$$_2$$. Our experimental data presented here provide valuable insights into the underlying physics in strongly-hybridized ferromagnetic Ce compounds.

With upgraded detectors at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), it has become possible to measure hadrons beyond their ground states in high energy heavy ion collisions. Therefore, heavy ion collisions provide a new method for studying exotic hadrons that are either molecular states made of various hadrons or compact system consisting of muliquarks. Because their structures are related to the fundamental properties of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), studying exotic hadrons is currently one of the most active areas of research in hadron physics. The present review is a summary of the current understanding of a selected set of exotic candidate particles that can be potentially measured in heavy ion collisions.

We report the soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission study for LaNi$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$ to reveal the electronic structures derived from non-4$$f$$ bands of the heavy fermion compound CeNi$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$. The photoemission spectra recorded at the La M$$_{4,5}$$ absorption edges clearly show the enhancement of the La 5$$d$$ components in the valence band spectra. The circular dichroism of photoemission spectra reveals the band-dependent dichroic response due to the orbital symmetry.

Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P) planned in the J-PARC project uses minor actinide (MA) fuels in the experiments. These MA fuels are highly-radioactive, so the fuel handling equipment in TEF-P is necessary to be designed as remote-handling system. This report summarizes fabrication and test results of the testing equipment for fuel loading that is one of components of the testing equipment for remote-handling of MA fuels. The testing equipment which had a remote-handling system for fuel loading was fabricated. And the test in combination with the mock-up core was performed. Through the test, it was confirmed to load/take the dummy fuel pin to/from the mock-up core without failure. It was shown that the concept design of the fuel loading equipment of TEF-P was reasonable.

Radioactive isotope, nuclear fuel material and radiation generators are utilized in research institutes, universities, hospitals, private enterprises, etc. As a result, various low-level radioactive wastes (hereinafter referred to as non-nuclear radioactive wastes) are produced. Disposal site for non-nuclear radioactive wastes have not been settled yet and those wastes are stored in storage facilities of each operator for a long period. The Advanced Volume Reduction Facilities (AVRF) are built to produce waste packages so that they satisfy requirements for shallow underground disposal. In the AVRF, low-level beta-gamma solid radioactive wastes produced in the Nuclear Science Research Institute are mainly treated. To produce waste packages meeting requirements for disposal safely and efficiently, it is necessary to cut large radioactive wastes into pieces of suitable size and segregate those depending on their types of material. This report summarizes activities of pretreatment to dispose of non-nuclear radioactive wastes in the AVRF.

Calculation of cross sections for metastable state production in the $$(n,gamma)$$, $$(n,n')$$, $$(n,2n)$$ and $$(n,3n)$$ reactions of $$^{93}$$Nb

Toward the revision of $$^{93}$$Nb data in JENDL-4.0, we calculated cross sections for metastable state production in the $$(n,gamma)$$, $$(n,n')$$, $$(n,2n)$$ and $$(n,3n)$$ reactions in the incident energy range from 7 keV to 20 MeV. The cross sections were computed on the basis of nuclear reaction models (the spherical optical model, the multi-step statistical model, preequilibrium models, and the distorted-wave Born approximation). By adjusting the parameters in nuclear spin densities and the number of discrete states, we could obtain the metastable state production cross sections which were almost consistent with the measured data. The obtained $$^{93}$$Nb$$(n,n')$$$$^{93m}$$Nb cross section was in good agreement with the experiments in the incident energies below 10 MeV, in comparison with JENDL/A-96.
