We report an inelastic X-ray scattering investigation of phonons in FeSe superconductor. Comparing the experimental phonon dispersion with density functional theory (DFT) calculations in the non-magnetic state, we found a significant disagreement between them. A better overall agreement was obtained by allowing for spin-polarization in DFT calculations, despite the absence of magnetic order in FeSe. This calculation gives a realistic approximation, at DFT level, of the disordered paramagnetic state of FeSe, in which strong spin fluctuations are present.

Five intercomparisons of in situ $$gamma$$ spectrometry by 6-7 participating teams have been conducted between December 2011 and August 2015 at sites in Fukushima prefecture which affected by the fallout of FDNPS accident occurred in March 2011. The evaluated deposition densities agreed within 5-6% in terms of coefficient of variation (CV) for radiocesium ($$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs), by our best achievement, and the ratio of $$^{134}$$Cs/$$^{137}$$Cs in deposition density agreed within 1-2% in CV, through five intercomparisons. These results guarantee the accuracy of the measurements of the mapping project. Two different methods for intercomparison were conducted: (1) sequential measurements at an identical point; and (2) simultaneous measurements in a narrow area within 3 m radius. In a comparison between the two methods at a site, no significant difference was observed between the results. The standard protocols for the two different intercomparison methods were proposed based on our experience.

This paper focuses on the formation mechanism of fractures induced by excavation of a gallery in soft sedimentary rocks in the Horonobe area of Japan. Detailed fracture mapping of the gallery indicates that the fractures consist of both pre-existing fractures (shear fractures) and EDZ fractures (extension fractures). EDZ fractures correspond to bedding planes or potential joints inferred by paleo-stress field, and the EDZ fractures terminate against pre-existing fractures. Therefore, even for excavations in soft sedimentary rocks, formation of the EDZ fractures are controlled by pre-existing fractures and weakness planes associated with bedding planes and potential joints.

As a part of the aging and structural integrity research for LWR components, new PFM (Probabilistic Fracture Mechanics) analysis code PASCAL-SP (PFM Analysis of Structural Components in Aging LWR - Stress Corrosion Cracking at Welded Joints of Piping) has been developed. This code evaluates the failure probabilities at welding lines of aged piping by a Monte Carlo method. PASCAL-SP treats stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in piping, including approaches of NISA and JSME FFS Code. The development of the code has been aimed to improve the accuracy and reliability of analysis by introducing new analysis methodologies and algorithms considering the latest knowledge in the SCC assessment and fracture criteria of piping. In addition, the accuracy of flaw detection and sizing at in-service inspection and residual stress distribution were modeled based on experimental data and introduced into PASCAL-SP. This report provides the user's manual and theoretical background of the code.

Distributions of air dose rate and inventory of radioactive cesium deposited on ground were investigated in 2013, within 80-km radial area centered around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. We revealed the characteristics of the time-dependent change of the air dose rate and the inventory by comparison with the measurement results of the past investigations.

We report the first IXS study of single crystals of SrFe$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$ that have been detwinned via application of in-plane uniaxial stress. Our results clearly show anisotropy in phonon structure below $$it T_{s}$$ = $$it T_{N}$$ characterized by mode splitting at tetragonally-equivalent momentum transfers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of phonon anisotropy in iron-pnictides at finite momentum transfers. We obtain good agreement with our results using calculations that are modified to account for a reduced magnetic moment and fluctuating magnetism. Previous efforts using either non-magnetic calculations or static magnetism tend to either get the dispersion wrong from non-magnetic calculations or strongly over-estimate the phonon mode splitting when static magnetism is included. Our model for the response below $$it T_{N}$$ incorporates a phenomenological reduction in force constant anisotropy, by about 65%, that can be attributed to residual fast magnetic fluctuations. Above $$it T_{N}$$, all fluctuations are assumed to be fast and the response becomes the average of the results from the static magnetism. This serves as a starting point for a general model of phonons in iron-pnictides applicable to both non-magnetic and magnetic phases.

In the design of the next generation sodium fast reactor (SFR), reinforcement of the design in terms of independency, diversity and multipleness is required. To meet this requirement, optimal configuration of emergency power supply system for next generation SFR is investigated and concept of this configuration is established.
