spinel induced by swift heavy ions. SAXS indicates the formation of ion tracks with cylindrical shape with a diameter of 5 nm. XANES indicates the cationic disordering between tetrahedral and octahedral sites by the irradiation. Quantitative analysis of XANES also reveals that cations preferably occupy the octahedral sites at high fluence.

spinel induced by swift heavy ions was investigated using the X-ray absorption near edge structure. With changes in the irradiation fluences of 200 MeV Xe ions, the Mg K-edge and Al K-edge spectra were synchronously changed. The calculated spectra based on density function theory indicate that the change in the experimental spectra was due to cationic disorder between Mg in tetrahedral sites and Al in octahedral sites. These results suggest a high inversion degree to an extent that the completely random configuration is achieved in MgAl
O
induced by the high density electronic excitation under swift heavy ion irradiation.

In this study, first, an analysis method to predict the behaviour of residual stress distribution on shot peening process was proposed. In the proposed method, the load distribution on the collision of shots was modelled, and it was integrated with the dynamic analysis method based on the idealized explicit FEM (IEFEM). The accuracy of the proposed analysis system was confirmed by comparing the stress distribution on the collision of a single shot with the results analyzed by ABAQUS. The thermal elastic plastic analysis method using IEFEM was applied to the analysis of residual stress distribution of multi-pass welded pipe joint. The calculated residual stress distribution was compared with the measured residual stress distribution using X-ray diffraction (XRD). As a result, it was shown that the both welding residual distribution agree well with each other. Considering the calculated welding residual stress distribution, the modification of stress distribution due to shot peening was predicted by the proposed analysis system. As a result, the similar stress distribution with measurement by XRD was obtained in case that a large number of collisions are considered.

However, the reliable technique to reduce substantially rice Cd contamination has not been offered so far. Here, we report the ion-beam irradiated rice mutants that do not nearly accumulate Cd in the grains and the mutant gene responsible for the Cd limitation. We found three mutants in which a favorable low-Cd trait is expressed by the different mutations on the same gene (
), and the transporter encoded by the mutant gene
had a defective function of root Cd influx. The mutants adapted well in the Cd-polluted paddy fields by exhibiting nearly non-detectable Cd concentrations in their grains in accordance with no adverse economic traits. The DNA marker has been developed to breed new cultivars carrying
. Our findings would be useful for greatly reducing the Cd level of paddy rice.

In this study, a residual stress distribution in a dissimilar plate butt-welded joint was simulated by a thermo-elastic finite element method. The base metal was the austenitic stainless steel SUS316L. The other base metal was nickel super-alloy NCF600, and the weld metal was the alloy 82 (YNiCr-3). The dimensions of the plate butt-welded joint were a width of 200 mm, a length of 250 mm and a thickness of 25 mm. The welding joint was fabricated by TIG welding with 22 passes. For comparison, the residual stress distribution for the similar butt-welded joint of SUS316L was simulated as well as the dissimilar welded joint. According to the simulated results, there was not the difference in the thermal field between the similar and the dissimilar welded joints. The residual stress distribution in the similar welded joint became symmetrical to the welding center after removal of the weld bead. For the dissimilar welded joint, the peak of the residual stresses moved to the NCF600 side a little. The residual stress level of the dissimilar welded joint was large compared with the similar welded joint. The residual stress of the welding direction was larger than that of the transverse direction.

We investigated the solubility of the crystals of a DNA hexamer d(CGCGCG) and their melting temperature, at which the thermal conversion occurs. The results obtained suggest that the conversion from a dsDNA to ssDNAs results in an increase in solubility. It was shown that using this temperature-controlled technique, high-grade single crystals of the DNA hexamer could be obtained from a small amount of DNA samples. This easy-to-apply technique would be superior to the conventional vapor diffusion technique in that it allows the solubility of DNA crystals to be controlled with no need for expensive setups.

Since quality control issues for vitrified waste are defined mainly with the focus on the transport and storage of the waste rather than the long-term safety of geological disposal, they do not cover inventories of long-lived nuclides which are of most interest in the safety assessment of geological disposal. Therefore we suggest a flow chart for assessment of inventories of long-lived nuclides in the vitrified waste focusing on measured value. We started a programme to examine the applicability as well as to improve reliability of nuclide generation/decay code and nuclear data library using liquid waste from spent fuel with clear irradiation history. To solve the issue of quality control for vitrified waste, comprehensive study is needed in aspects not only of geological disposal field but also of operation of nuclear power plant, reprocessing of spent fuel and vitrification of liquid waste. This study is a pioneering study to integrate them.
