The absorption, transport and accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in rice were analyzed quantitatively using the positron-emitting tracer imaging system (PETIS). We developed a method to produce Cd tracer and obtained serial images of Cd distribution in intact rice plants at vegetative stage and grain-filling stage using PETIS. The results suggest that xylem-to-phloem transfer is a pivotal process on the route from the soil to the grains and the nodes are the most likely organ where the transfer takes place.

Cadmium is one of the most serious pollutants for foods over the world. In this study, we newly developed carrier-free Cd (half-life: 6.5 hr) tracer and successfully obtained movies of cadmium transport in intact rice (
L.), oilseed rape (
L.) and sorghum (
) using the Positron Emitting Tracer Imaging System (PETIS). The difference of mobility of cadmium between rice and sorghum plants was suggested. We analyzed the time-activity curves from some regions on the serial image data, and determined the speed of cadmium transport between the nodes in grain-filling rice plants. A quantitative analysis of cadmium absorption from the culture and deposition into the nodes at the basal region of rice plants was also made, and the model of cadmium absorption and transport via xylem and phloem will be discussed.
