Oxide particles in oxide dispersion strengthened steel neutron-irradiated up to 158 dpa at Joyo

We investigated the stability of oxide nano particles in oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) steel, which is a promising candidate material for next-generation reactors, under neutron irradiation at high temperature to high doses. MA957, a 14Cr-ODS steel, was irradiated with Joyo in Japan Atomic Energy Agency under irradiation conditions of 130 dpa at 502$$^{circ}$$C, 154 dpa at 589$$^{circ}$$C, and 158 dpa at 709$$^{circ}$$C. Three-dimensional atom probe (3D-AP) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation were performed to characterize the oxide particles in the ODS steels. A high number density of Y-Ti-O particle was observed in the unirradiated and irradiated samples. Almost no change in the morphology of the oxide particles, i.e. average diameter, number density, and chemical composition, has been observed in the samples irradiated to 130 dpa at 502$$^{circ}$$C and to 154 dpa at 589$$^{circ}$$C. A slight decrease in number density was observed in the sample irradiated to 158 dpa at 709$$^{circ}$$CC. The hardness of any of the irradiated samples was almost unchanged from that of the unirradiated sample. It was revealed that the oxide particles existed stable, and the strength of the material was sufficiently maintained even after being neutron irradiated to high dose of $$sim$$160 dpa at high temperature up to 700$$^{circ}$$C. Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments under high pressure in the frustrated antiferromagnet CuFeO$$_{2}$$

The frustrated antiferromagnet CuFeO$$_{2}$$ exhibits pressure-induced complex magnetic phase transitions from the commensurate collinear (CM1) phase to several incommensurate noncollinear phases. To study the effect of high pressure on magnetic interactions, we performed neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments under high-pressure conditions. With increasing pressure, the CM1 ground state becomes less stable against application of a magnetic field even below the critical pressure ($${P}$$ $$leqq$$ 3 GPa), as proved by the significant reduction in the critical magnetic field from $${H_{c1}}$$ =7.5 T to 4.5 T at 2.1 GPa. Additionally, the energy gap in the spin-wave dispersion relation is reduced from 1.0 to 0.88 meV by the application of a pressure of $${P}$$ = 2.1 GPa. Comparing the experimental results with spin-wave calculations revealed that the change in the spin-wave excitation can be explained by the reduction in either the uniaxial anisotropy term or the degree of separation in the nearest-neighbor exchange interactions.

In probabilistic risk assessment against earthquakes (seismic PRA), one of the important issues is the development of a realistic response analysis method for evaluating the fragility of equipment and piping systems subject to input ground motions exceeding design assumption. Particularly, piping systems have complex plant-specific three-dimensional geometries. The arrangement and rigidity of piping support structures have significant impact on the response characteristics of the entire piping system. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a seismic response analysis method for piping systems, including piping support structures. To this end, the authors have been working on the development of elasto-plastic analysis method for piping support structures in order to establish a realistic response analysis method for piping systems including piping support structures. In this study, parametric studies on important analytical parameters were conducted to understand the influence of the analytical parameters on the deformation in the elasto-plastic analysis of piping support structures. At first, a three-dimensional finite element analysis model was created for cyclic loading tests of a gate type piping support structure assuming large deformations. Using the model, parametric studies were conducted for analysis parameters such as yield stress, secondary stiffness and element size. As the result, the influences of the analysis parameters on the analysis results were quantitatively clarified, which provided insight into the methodology for setting appropriate analysis parameters on elasto-plastic analysis for piping support structures.

In order to investigate the cause of the increase in differential pressure in the primary helium circulator filter that occurred during the RS-14 cycle, a clogged filter was investigated. As a result of the investigation, deposits caused by silicone oil were confirmed on the surface of the filter element. These results revealed that the cause of filter clogging was silicone oil mixed into the primary system due to performance deterioration of the charcoal filter in the gas circulator of primary helium purification system. As a measure to prevent the recurrence of this event, in addition to the conventional management based on operating hours for replacing of charcoal filter in the gas circulator of primary helium purification system, we have established a new replacement plan for every three years.

Given that conventional methods of high-dose sample analysis pose substantial exposure risks and generate large amounts of secondary radioactive waste, faster procedures allowing for decreased radiation emission are highly desirable. To address this need, we developed a $$^{90}$$Sr$$^{2+}$$ quantitation technique that is based on liquid scintillation counting-coupled capillary transient isotachophoresis (ctITP) with two-point detection and relies on the rapid concentration, separation, and fractionation of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA)-complexed $$^{90}$$Sr$$^{2+}$$ in a single run. This method, which allows for the handling of high-dose radioactive specimens at the microliter level and is substantially faster than conventional ion-exchange protocols, was used to selectively quantify $$^{90}$$Sr$$^{2+}$$ in real high-dose waste. The successful concentration-separation in ctITP was ascribed to the inertness of the Sr-DOTA complex to dissociation.

The effects of fast neutron irradiation on tensile properties of modified 316 stainless steel (PNC316) claddings and wrappers for fast reactors were investigated. PNC316 claddings and wrappers were irradiated in the experimental fast reactor Joyo at irradiation temperatures between 400 and 735 $$^{circ}$$C to fast neutron doses ranging from 21 to 125 dpa. The post-irradiation tensile tests were carried out at room and irradiation temperatures. Elongations of PNC316 measured by the tensile tests were maintained at an engineering level, although the material incurred significant irradiation hardening and softening. The maximum swelling of PNC316 wrappers was about 2.5 vol.% at irradiation temperature between 400 and 500$$^{circ}$$C up to 110 dpa. Japanese 20% cold-worked austenitic steels, PNC316 and 15Cr-20Ni, had sufficient ductility and work-hardenability even after above 10 vol.% swelling, while they had very weak plastic instabilities.
