We extended the dynamical Kubo-Toyabe model to resolve inconsistencies in a conventional protocol for $$mu$$SR-based analysis of ion dynamics in solids. Our new model not only provides a means for quantitative analysis based on the immobile-muon assumption, but also offers a method to evaluate the validity of this assumption.

Conceptual study of J-PARC Proton Beam Irradiation Facility

Based on the design of the ADS Target Test Facility (TEF-T) at the J-PARC Transmutation Experimental Facility, a conceptual study was conducted on the J-PARC proton beam irradiation facility. This research was carried out based on the recommendations of the Nuclear Transmutation Technology Evaluation Task Force of the MEXT. The recommendations state that it is desirable to consider facility specifications that can make the most of the benefits of using the existing J-PARC proton accelerator while also solving the engineering issues of the ADS. We considered facilities that could respond to a variety of needs while reducing the facilities that were not needed in the TEF-T design. In order to clarify these diverse needs, we investigated the usage status of representative accelerator facilities around the world. As a result, it became clear that the main purposes of these facilities were (1) Material irradiation, (2) Soft error testing of semiconductor devices using spallation neutrons, (3) Production of RI for medical use, and (4) Proton beam use, and we investigated the facilities necessary for these purposes. In considering the facility concept, we assumed a user community in 2022 and reflected user opinions in the facility design. This report summarizes the results of the conceptual study of the proton irradiation facility, various needs and responses to them, the roadmap for facility construction, and future issues.

Multiple DNA damages induced by water radiolysis demonstrated using a dynamic Monte Carlo code

Radiation DNA damage is formed from direct and indirect effects. The direct effect is the interaction between DNA and a radiation, while the indirect effect is the chemical reaction between DNA and radiolytic chemical species. We believed that when the direct effect is induced, multiple lesions are formed within 10 base pairs (about 3.4 nm) of DNA. The damage reduces repair efficiency and induces biological effects. In this study, DNA damage induced by only indirect effects was quantitatively evaluated. Our results indicated that the multiple damage is formed when only 10s of eV energy is deposited to water in the vicinity of DNA, although its formation probability is less than 1%. In other words, the possibility of late biological effects cannot be excluded simply by imparting energy to water in the extreme vicinity of DNA without direct interaction between radiation and DNA. Our results are one of the most important findings for understanding low-dose radiation risk.

Lacustrine deposits have 30-fold higher As abundance than the average crustal deposit. Arsenic is mostly concentrated as discrete horizons deposited in spring and autumn. As-rich layers contain FeAsS, AsS, and As$$_{2}$$S$$_{3}$$ but As-rich hotspots mostly contain FeAsS. As accumulation to sediment is controlled by redox potential with organic matter.

The uranium enrichment facilities at the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) were constructed sequentially to develop uranium enrichment technology with centrifugal separation method. The developed technologies were transferred to Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited until 2001. And the original purpose has been achieved. Wastewater Treatment Facility, one of the uranium enrichment facilities, was constructed in 1976 to treat radioactive liquid waste generated at the facilities, and it finished the role in 2008. In accordance with the Medium/Long-Term Management Plan of JAEA Facilities, interior equipment installed in this facility had been dismantled and removed since November 2021 to August 2023. This report summarizes the findings obtained through the work related to dismantling and removal of interior equipment for decommissioning of Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Study on the effect of radiation-resistant resin on water radiolysis

In recent years, the use of radiation-resistant resins of polyimide and polyether ether ketone becomes increasing as vessels for irradiation and unsealed radioisotope experiments. However, in our radiolysis experiments, the possibility of interaction between radiolysis products of water and the resin was found, suggesting concerns that the resin may affect reactions in water in radiation fields. To clarify the interaction, dichromate (Cr$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$$$^{2-}$$) reduction and hydrogen peroxide (H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$) formation in $$gamma$$-radiolysis of water were compared with and without the resin. The Cr$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$$$^{2-}$$ reduction amount in aqueous solution with the resin became larger than that without the resin at the same dose, indicating the promotion of Cr$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$$$^{2-}$$ reduction by the resin. On the other hand, the H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ formation in pure water with and without an electron scavenger were almost independent of the presence of resin. These suggested the interaction between hydroxyl radical and the resin in contact with water in radiation fields.

Real-time monitoring method for gadolinium concentration in a water Cherenkov detector

Among various analytical methods for liquid samples, time-resolved laser-induced luminescence spectroscopy enables real-time measurements of Gd ion concentrations in aqueous solution without sample introduction into the spectrometer. In this work, we have developed a real-time monitoring method for Gd concentration in water. The detection limit was determined to be $$sim$$60 ppb for Gd sulfate in ultrapure water. This value is about two orders of magnitude better than the reported value using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and is close to that using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry which requires sample introduction into the spectrometer.

The effects of strain rate on tensile properties of irradiated modified 316 stainless steel (PNC316) claddings were investigated. PNC316 claddings were irradiated at the experimental fast reactor Joyo using CRT402 control rod assembly at 400$$^{circ}$$C up to 25 dpa. Post-irradiation ring tensile tests were carried out at strain rates of 3.3$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$, 3.3$$times$$10$$^{-7}$$ and 3.3$$times$$10$$^{-8}$$ s$$^{-1}$$ at a test temperature of 350$$^{circ}$$C. The results showed no obvious dependence of all strain rates on tensile properties, although a slight decrease in total elongation was observed at the slowest strain rate of 3.3$$times$$10$$^{-8}$$ s$$^{-1}$$. In addition, only a part of fracture surface at the slowest strain rate showed intergranular type region in the inner surface area, although the grain boundary separation occurred on inner surfaces near the fracture region at all strain rates. It is suggested that presence of a high content of helium near the inner surfaces would be related to the fracture behavior.
