Double-notch specimens with various notch separation distances were coated with photo-plastic film. Arbitrary combined axial tensile and bending loads were applied to the specimens. Changes in the photo-plastic fringe pattern were observed during the tests to investigate the plastic collapse behavior. The plastic collapse strength was evaluated using a model based on an elastic-perfectly plastic body. The photo-plastic fringe patterns at the experimental plastic collapse point differed based on the loading history. Thus, the plastic collapse behavior depends on the loading history. In addition, the plastic collapse strength differed based on the loading history and hardly depended on the notch separation distance. The experimental plastic collapse occurred before reaching the theoretical plastic point for only some pure-tension loading tests. Thus, the model analysis based on an elastic-perfectly plastic body used in this study might give an unconservative estimate for the plastic collapse of a stainless steel pipe subjected to a pure tension load.

Practical energy is successfully generated in both synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements under controlled conditions and real engine dynamometer experiments. The main generating origin is revealed as a combination of a crystal structure change and dipole change phenomenon corresponds to the temperature variation. In particular, the electric field induced 180 domain switching extremely improves generating power, and the true energy breakeven with temperature variation is firstly achieved.

The progress in structural analytical techniques of polymer crystals have been reviewed at first. The structural models proposed so far were reinvestigated and new models have been proposed for various kinds of polymer crystals including polyethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(lactic acid) and its stereocomplex etc. The hydrogen atomic positions were also clarified by the quantitative analysis of wide-angle neutron diffraction data, from which the physical properties of polymer crystals have been evaluated theoretically. The bonded electron density distribution has been estimated for a polydiacetylene single crystal on the basis of the so-called X-N method or by the combination of structural information derived from X-ray and neutron diffraction data analysis. Some comments have been added about future developments in the field of structure-property relationship determination.

However, the reliable technique to reduce substantially rice Cd contamination has not been offered so far. Here, we report the ion-beam irradiated rice mutants that do not nearly accumulate Cd in the grains and the mutant gene responsible for the Cd limitation. We found three mutants in which a favorable low-Cd trait is expressed by the different mutations on the same gene (), and the transporter encoded by the mutant gene had a defective function of root Cd influx. The mutants adapted well in the Cd-polluted paddy fields by exhibiting nearly non-detectable Cd concentrations in their grains in accordance with no adverse economic traits. The DNA marker has been developed to breed new cultivars carrying . Our findings would be useful for greatly reducing the Cd level of paddy rice.

A reactor installed at the center part of the nuclear ship "Mutsu" has been stored safely and exhibited in a reactor room building since 1996. The reactor vessel and its internals are key components because of main radioactive wastes for the reasonable decommissioning plan in the future. This report describes the one-piece removal method as the one package of the reactor vessel with its internals intact with a shipping container or additional shields. The reactor vessel package (Max. 100 ton) will be classified acceptable for burial at the low level radioactive waste (LLW), which will be buried at a LLW pit facility under waste disposal regulations. And also, the package will be classified as an IP-2-equivalent package according to the requirement for Shipments and Packagings.

A Si-crystal analyzer backscattering spectrometer DNA is planned to be installed at the pulsed neutron source of the Material and Life Science Facility (MLF), J-PARC, and the construction has partially begun in the summer of 2010. The field of expected scientific research on the DNA spectrometer is very wide including the soft matter dynamics, the bio-molecular dynamics, the chemical molecular dynamics, the characterizations of the functional materials and the spin dynamics in the magnetism.

We are beginning the construction of the near backscattering Si crystal analyzer spectrometer DNA in the pulsed neutron source of the Material and Life Science Facility (MLF) at J-PARC. This is the spectrometer to cover the area of the micro-eV energy range in the several spectrometers which are in the construction or planned the construction in MLF. The field of expected scientific research on the DNA spectrometer is very wide including the soft matter dynamics, the bio-molecular dynamics, the chemical molecular dynamics, the characterizations of the functional materials and the spin dynamics in the magnetism. We will report the present status of the construction schedule on DNA.
