Ice IV is a metastable high-pressure phase of ice in which the water molecules exhibit orientational disorder. Although orientational ordering is commonly observed for other ice phases, it has not been reported for ice IV. We conducted ${it in situ}$ powder neutron diffraction experiments for DCl-doped D$$_{2}$$O ice IV to investigate hydrogen ordering in ice IV. We found abrupt changes in the temperature derivative of unit cell volume, dV/dT, at about 120 K, and revealed their slightly ordered structure at low temperatures based on the Rietveld method. The occupancy of the D1 site deviates from 0.5; it increased when samples were cooled at higher pressures and reached 0.282(5) at 2.38 GPa, 58 K. Our results evidence the presence of a low-symmetry hydrogen-ordered state corresponding to ice IV. It seems, however, difficult to experimentally access the completely ordered phase corresponding to ice IV by slow cooling at high pressure.

The hydrogen absorption and diffusion mechanisms on cube-shaped Pd nanoparticles (NPs) which are important hydrogen-storage materials were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and DFT calculations. In the surface region, hydrogen absorption showed almost similar behavior regardless of the NPs size. It was found that the octahedral sites are more favorable than the tetrahedral sites for hydrogen occupation. We also clarified that the hydrogen atoms absorbing on the smaller-sized Pd NPs diffuse to the subsurface more actively because of the weakened Pd-H bond by the surface disordering, which plays an important role in hydrogen adsorption at a low H$$_{2}$$ pressure.

We have upgraded a 3-MeV linac at J-PARC. The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the old 30-mA RFQ is replaced by a spare 50-mA RFQ, therefore, the beam energy is 3 MeV and the nominal beam current is 50 mA. The main purpose of this system is to test the spare RFQ, but also used for testing of various components required in order to keep the stable operation of the J-PARC accelerator. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and measurement programs have been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

An unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes solver with a structured overset grid method has been developed. Velocity pressure coupling is achieved using an artificial compressibility approach, spatial discretization is based on a FVM. Body motions are considered using the grid deformation technique and grid velocities in the convective term. The full multigrid (FMG) method is applied to obtain fast convergence. The cell flag on a coarse grid level is determined using the cell flag on a fine grid level. In the coarse and fine grid level calculations at the FMG stage, the data are interpolated until the finest grid level is achieved at an overset update interval. Then, the data are updated based on the overset relations at the finest grid level and then transferred to a coarser grid level. The computations for flows around a hull form, including an unsteady simulation with regular waves, are demonstrated.

One of important research targets in the development of cesium isotope separation system is design of recovery process of cesium atom. Relevant to this research target, the reaction cross section and reaction rate constant of a cesium exchange reaction through collision of the cesium iodide molecules with cesium atoms are calculated by a quasi-classical trajectory calculation based on a potential energy surface obtained by quantum chemistry calculations. Consequently, the rate constant is calculated to be 3.6 $$times$$ 10$$^{-10}$$ cm$$^{3}$$molecule$$^{-1}$$s$$^{-1}$$, as large as collision rate in the present condition. In addition, slightly positive temperature dependence is observed in the rate constant. This behavior is explained with the long-range attractive force and effect of subsequent dissociation process.

A Quasi-classical trajectory calculation for the cesium exchange reaction of $$^{133}$$CsI (v = 0, j = 0) + $$^{135}$$Cs $$rightarrow$$ $$^{133}$$Cs + I$$^{135}$$Cs

Kobayashi, Takanori*; Matsuoka, Leo*; Yokoyama, Keiichi

Nihon Enerugi Gakkai-Shi, 96(10), p.441 - 444, 2017/10

To investigate the reaction cross section of the cesium exchange reaction of $$^{133}$$CsI (v = 0, j = 0) + $$^{135}$$Cs $$rightarrow$$ $$^{133}$$Cs + I$$^{135}$$Cs, we performed quasi-classical trajectory calculations on the potential energy surface calculated by the ab initio molecular orbital theory. The potential energy surface shows that intermediate Cs$$_{2}$$I is formed without entrance barrier and has two equivalent Cs-I bonds. The reaction cross sections decrease monotonically with increasing collision energy. The rate constant k (v = 0, j = 0) was estimated to be about 3$$times$$10$$^{-10}$$cm$$^{3}$$ molecule$$^{-1}$$s$$^{-1}$$ at temperatures ranging from 500 to 1200K and a slight negative temperature dependence was observed.

In order to reduce the influence on a plant schedule of the MONJU by the maintenance of dew point hygrometers, The JAEA examined a capacitance type dew point hygrometer as an alternative dew point hygrometer for a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer which had been used at the CV-LRT in the MONJU. As a result of comparing a capacitance type dew point hygrometer with a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer at the CV-LRT (Atmosphere: nitrogen, Testing time: 24 hours), there weren't significant difference between a capacitance type dew point hygrometer and a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer. As a result of comparing a capacitance dew point hygrometer with a high-mirror-surface type dew point hygrometer for long term verification (Atmosphere: air, Testing time: 24 months), the JAEA confirmed that a capacitance type dew point hygrometer satisfied the instrument specification ($$pm$$2.04$$^{circ}$$C) required by the JEAC4203-2008.

Theoretical investigation for the adsorption of the cesium atom (Cs), the cesium iodide molecule (CsI), the iodine atom (I), the cesium cation (Cs$$^+$$), and the iodide anion (I$$^-$$) onto the surface of a single fullerene molecule (C$$_{60}$$) are reported. A hybrid exchange-correlation functional using the Coulomb-attenuating method (CAM-B3LYP) is employed. The adsorption energies, i.e., the opposite of enthalpy change through adsorption, are calculated to be 34, 3, 2, 11, and 12 kcal mol$$^{-1}$$ for Cs, CsI, I, Cs$$^+$$, and I$$^-$$, respectively. The equilibrium constant for Cs is calculated to be 7$$times$$10$$^3$$ atm$$^{-1}$$ at the temperature of 1000 K and is seven orders of magnitude higher than that for CsI, indicating that the C$$_{60}$$ molecule adsorb the Cs atom highly selectively against the CsI molecule.

JAEA-Research 2015-014, 7 Pages, 2015/12

JAEA-Research-2015-014.pdf:2.46MB

To discuss the exchange reaction of Cs isotope by CsI + Cs'$$rightarrow$$ Cs + ICs', the structure and chemical properties of Cs$$_2$$I intermediate and potential energy surface are calculated using M06/def2-TZVPPD density functional calculation. The calculation shows that the reaction to the intermediate has no barrier and the two Cs-I bonds of Cs$$_2$$I are chemically equivalent. Thus, the collision of CsI + Cs' results in Cs exchange with the high probability.

The loss of the retaining split pins (four pieces) for clevis pin were confirmed at the inspection of the pipe supports in the Monju prototype fast-breeder reactor in May, 2014. The split pins (two pieces) of ROD RESTRAINT and CONSTANT HANGER were fallen off. The split pins (two pieces) of MECHANICAL SNUBBER were broken at both ends of them. As a result of investigation, a dimple pattern was observed in a fracture surface of broken split pin. This observation result showed that fracture morphology is ductile fracture. A reproduction test, whether split pin was broken by loading the external force to the clevis pin, also gave the same fracture morphology. As the result of all cause investigation, the reason of the broken split pins is that the split pins were loaded shearing stress by the external force loaded to the clevis pin axial direction. The result of the cause investigation and a recurrence prevention measure of this trouble was be reported by this report.

I confirmed a leak of the effluent gas from cylinder part during a load examination after the check of the emergency generator C unit on December 28, 2010 of the facilities check average and confirmed crack in No.8 cylinder liner part. As a result, because it was not performed oil pressure management properly without attaching an oil pressure gauge when I removed cylinder liner about the cause, crack occurred by having been able to write excessive stress for the cylinder liner and reached damage. By a process of this investigation, a fall of the materials strength of some cylinder liner was confirmed, but because a lead ingredient got mixed with materials by a casting process at the time of the production of the cylinder liner, as for this, Widmannst tten graphite occurred, and it became clear that materials strength fell. In addition, I performed inspection by the supersonic wave velocity measurement as technique to distinguish this Widmannst tten graphite easily and confirmed that I was effective.

The first driver fuel of the HTTR (High Temperature Engineering test Reactor) was loaded in 1998 and the HTTR reached first criticality state in the same year. The HTTR has been operated using the first driver fuel for a decade. In Fuel elements assembling, 4770 of fuel rods which consist of 12 kinds of enrichment uranium are loaded into 150 fuel graphite blocks for HTTR second driver fuel elements. Measures of prevention of fuel rod miss loading, are employed in fuel design. Additionally, precaution of fuel handling on assembling are considered. Reception of fuel rods, assembling of fuel elements and storage of second driver fuels in the fresh fuel storage rack in the HTTR were started since June, 2008. Assembling, storage and pre-service inspection were divided into three parts. The second driver fuel assembling was completed in September, 2008. This report describes concerns of fuel handling on assembling and storage work for the HTTR fuel elements.

This report summarizes the progress of research and development on geological disposal during the surface-based investigation phase (2001-2005) in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory project (HOR), of which aims are to apply the design methods of geological disposal and mass transport analysis to actual geological environments and derive future subjects based on the results. The design methods of geological disposal were reviewed based on the recent knowledge and the advertences were identified. Then the parameters for virtual design of engineered barrier system, backfill deposition hole and tunnel were set up based on actual geological conditions obtained from the surface-based investigations in HOR as an example of actual geological environment. The conceptual structure from site investigation and evaluation to mass transport analysis was represented as a work flow at first. Then following this work flow a series of procedures for mass transport analysis were carried out based on actual geological conditions obtained from the surface-based investigations in HOR to illustrate the functioning of the work flow and the applicability of this methodology. Consequently, knowledge that will help follow-up or future execution and planning activities was obtained.
