The impacts of oxygen in rhizosphere on the symbiotic nitrogen fixation in real-time was evaluated under various O partial pressure. Soybean nodules were treated with mixed gas containing N
labeled with a radioisotope
N and various concentrations of O
, and the nitrogen fixation activity in the nodules was visualized by the positron-emitting tracer imaging system (PETIS). The results showed that under normal condition the nitrogen fixation ability of soybean plant was higher compared to that of under the other conditions (0% O
and 10% O
). There was no significant difference in the nitrogen fixation activity between 0% O
and 10% O
.

= alkaline earth, rare earth, actinide;
= Fe, Ru, Os;
= pnictogen: P, As, Sb) exhibit a variety of physical properties such as superconductivity, magnetic ordering, heavy-Fermion behavior, and metal-insulator transition. Among them, YbFe
Sb
shows a heavy-Fermion or intermediate-valence behavior in the magnetic, electrical transport, and thermal properties, which might be associated with a valence instability of Yb atom. In this study, the electronic structure of YbFe
Sb
have been investigated by the high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy, using He discharge lamp and synchrotron radiation as an excitation sources. The bulk and surface components of the Yb
signal is clearly divided in the spectra. The relation of the energy position between them is anomalous compared to that of the conventional mixed-valent Yb compounds.

We developed an experimental system to evaluate photosynthetic activities of individuals using
CO
tracer gas and a positron-emitting tracer imaging system (PETIS). Two petri dishes each containing nine Arabidopsis plants (16 days or 20 days after sown) were placed into an airtight cabinet, and approximately 40 MBq of
CO
was introduced with normal air. The gas in the cabinet was flushed out after 10 minutes of contact, then the dishes were mounted on the center of field of view of the imaging system, and the dynamic image of carbon distribution in the plants was acquired for 1 hour. As a result, the rates of carbon fixation and of carbon translocation in the respective individuals were estimated through quantitative analysis of the image data. Furthermore, the source and sink strength were visualized as a pixel-by-pixel map. Our method is valuable for quantitative analysis of effects of specific genes or substances on photoassimilation and partitioning.
