Soil microbial community responding to moderately elevated nitrogen deposition in a Japanese cool temperate forest surrounded by fertilized grasslands

We analyzed the relationships between nitrogen deposition (deposition of nitrate and ammonium ions) and soil microbial properties in a cool temperate forest surrounded by normally fertilized pasture grasslands in northern Japan. The aim of the present study was to gain the primary information on soil microbial response to moderately elevated nitrogen deposition ($$<$$ 10 kg N ha$$^{-1}$$ y$$^{-1}$$). We established three experimental plots in the forest edge adjacent to grasslands and other three plots in the forest interior at least 700 m away from the grasslands. During May to November 2018, nitrogen deposition in each plot was measured. In August 2018, litter and soil (0-5 cm depth) samples were collected from all plots to measure net nitrogen mineralization and nitrification rates as indicators of microbial activity, and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen and various gene abundances (i.e. bacterial 16S rRNA, fungal ITS, bacterial amoA, and archaeal amoA genes) as indicators of microbial abundance and structure. Nitrogen deposition in the forest edge was 1.4-fold greater than that in the forest interior, even while the maximum deposition was 3.7 kg N ha$$^{-1}$$. Nitrogen deposition was significantly correlated to the net nitrogen mineralization and nitrification rates and the 16S rRNA and bacterial amoA gene abundances. Microbial community structures were different between litter and soil samples but were similar between the forest edge and interior. Significant correlations of nitrogen deposition to the soil carbon to nitrogen ratio, and the nitrate and ammonium contents were also observed. Thus, our results show that moderately elevated nitrogen deposition in nitrogen-limited forest edges can stimulate microbial activities and abundances in soils.

A quasifree ($$p$$,$$pn$$) experiment was performed to study the structure of the Borromean nucleus $$^{17}$$B, which had long been considered to have a neutron halo. By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for $$1s_{1/2}$$ and $$0d_{5/2}$$ orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)% was determined for $$1s_{1/2}$$. Our finding of such a small $$1s_{1/2}$$ component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in $$^{17}$$B. The present work gives the smallest $$s$$- or $$p$$-orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features and implies that the dominant occupation of $$s$$ or $$p$$ orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of a neutron halo.

By employing quasi-free $$alpha$$-cluster-knockout reactions, we obtained direct experimental evidence for the formation of $$alpha$$ clusters at the surface of neutron-rich tin isotopes. The observed monotonous decrease of the reaction cross sections with increasing mass number, in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction, implies a tight interplay between $$alpha$$-cluster formation and the neutron skin.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and post-closure performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, based on some examples of developing method of hydro-geological structure model, acquired knowledge are arranged using the tree diagram, and model uncertainty and its influence on the evaluation items were discussed. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the developed approach for "defining conditions" has been reevaluated and improved from practical viewpoints. In addition, the uncertainty evaluation for the effect of use of cementitious material, as well as glass dissolution model, was conducted with analytical evaluation. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, based on survey of precedent procedures, multiple-approach for distribution coefficient of rocks was established, and the adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to sedimentary rock and granitic rock. Besides, an approach for solubility setting was developed including the procedure of selection of solubility limiting solid phase. The adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to key radionuclides.

Following FY2011, JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, the tree diagram of methodology of groundwater travel time has been extended for crystalline rock, in addition, tree diagram for sedimentary rock newly has been organized. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the existing approach has been improved in terms of a practical task, and applied and tested for near field focusing on the buffer. In addition, the uncertainty of some important processes and its impact on safety functions are discussed though analysis. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, the approaches for parameter setting have been developed for sorption for rocks and solubility, and applied and tested through parameter setting exercises for key radionuclides.

Monitoring of the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) by geophysical methods during the test tunnel excavation at a depth of 140 m and 250 m

To evaluate the excavated damaged zone (EDZ) is one of the important factors to conduct high level radioactive waste disposal. We have conducted resistivity and acoustic tomography to evaluate EDZ during the excavation of the test tunnel at a depth of 140 m and 250 m. As a result, a few meters extent of high resistivity and low P-wave velocity zone were detected at a depth of 140 m. This suggests that EDZ by excavation of horizontal tunnel was estimated by resistivity and acoustic tomography. On the other hand, high resistivity zone were not detected at a depth of 250 m.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation phase. The topics and the conducted research are follows; (1) Study on selection of host rock: in terms of hydraulic properties, items for assessing rock property, and assessment methodology of groundwater travel time has been organized with interaction from site investigation. (2) Study on development of scenario: the existing approach has been embodied, in addition, the phenomenological understanding regarding dissolution of and nuclide release from vitrified waste, corrosion of the overpack, long-term performance of the buffer are summarized. (3) Study on setting nuclide migration parameters: the approach for parameter setting has been improved for sorption and diffusion coefficient of buffer/rock, and applied and tested for parameter setting of key radionuclides. (4) Study on ensuring quality of knowledge: framework for ensuring quality of knowledge has been studied and examined aimed at the likely disposal facility condition.

Summer schools for future experts have successfully been completed under Japan Actinide Network (J-ACTINET) for the purpose of development of human resources who are expected to be engaged in every areas of actinide-research/engineering. The first summer school was held in Ibaraki-area in August 2009, followed by the second one in Kansai-area in August 2010. Two summer schools have focused on actual experiences of actinides in actinide-research fields for university students and young researchers/engineers as an introductory course of actinide-researches. Several quasi actinide-handling experiences at the actinide-research fields have attracted attentions of participants at the first school in Ibaraki-area. The actual experiments using actinides-containing solutions have been carried out at the second school in Kansai-area. Future summer schools will be held every year for the sustainable human resource development in various actinide-research fields.

Extraction behavior and separation of lanthanides with a diglycol amic acid derivative and a nitrogen-donor ligand

The extraction and separation of lanthanides have been investigated using CHON type extractants, which are composed of only C, H, O, and N atoms. N, N-dioctyldiglycol amic acid (DODGAA) shows the high extraction and separation performances for heavier lanthanides compared with typical CHON type extractants. On the other hand, N, N, N', N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) provides the unprecedentedly high selectivity for lighter lanthanides. Furthermore, it was found that the combination of DODGAA and TPEN under suitable conditions enables the mutual separation of light, middle, and heavy lanthanides.

J-PARC is a large scale facility of the proton accelerators for the multi-purpose of scientific researches in Japan. This facility consists of three accelerators and three experimental stations. Now, J-PARC is under construction, and LINAC is operated for one year, 3GeV synchrotron has just started the commissioning in this October the 1st. The completion of this facility will be next summer. The control system of accelerators established fundamental performance for the initial commissioning. The most important requirement to the control system of this facility is to minimize the activation of accelerator devices. In this paper, we show that the performances of each layer of this control system have been achieved in the initial stage.

Evaluation of deuteron-induced activation for IFMIF accelerator structural materials

In the design of IFMIF, long-term operation with total facility availability of at least 70 % is required. However, activation of structural materials by deuteron beam limits maintenance, which causes lower facility availability. Thus it is essential to prepare deuteron-induced activation cross section database and to select low activation materials based on it. In this work, we measured deuteron-induced activation cross sections of aluminum, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, nickel, copper, tantalum, tungsten and gold. The measured cross sections were compared with other experimental data and calculations. Deuteron-induced activities of nuclides produced in SS316 and F82H alloys used as the accelerator structural material were also measured to validate the measured cross sections comprehensively. It demonstrated that the measured activities of almost all the nuclides were in agreement with evaluated ones based on the measured cross sections within error.

Activation cross sections for deuteron-induced reactions on aluminum, iron, copper, tantalum and tungsten were measured by using stacked-foil method. The stacked-foils were irradiated with deuteron beam at the AVF cyclotron in TIARA facility, JAERI. We obtained the activation cross-sections for $$^{27}$$Al(d,x)$$^{22,24}$$Na, $$^{nat}$$Fe(d,x)$$^{55,56}$$Co, $$^{nat}$$Cu(d,x)$$^{61}$$Cu, $$^{nat}$$Cu(d,x)$$^{62}$$Zn, $$^{nat}$$Ta(d,x)$$^{178,180}$$Ta and $$^{nat}$$W(d,x)$$^{181,183}$$Re in 20-40MeV region. These cross-sections were compared with other experimental ones and the data in the ACSELAM library calculated by the ALICE-F code.

The IFMIF (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility) is in the design planning stage as neutron source to test fusion reactor materials for high fluence neutron. In the design of it long-term operation that total facility is 70 % at least is required. However, deuteron beam activates the structural materials and these activation limits maintenance and makes long-term operation difficult. Thus the accurate estimation of deuteron-induced activity and the selection of structural materials are important. In this work, measurements of deuteron-induced activation cross sections for aluminum, iron, copper, tantalum, and tungsten were performed.
