Radiation resistant cable

Ukon, Seiichi*; Ishida, Katsuyoshi*; Takano, Kazuhiko*; Furukori, Hisayoshi*; Kusano, Joichi*

Fujikura Giho, 3(115), p.26 - 30, 2008/12

In general, polymeric cable installed in heavy radiation environment, such as nuclear power plant or radiation research facility as the J-PARC, deteriorates its performance by the effect of radiation damage. The deterioration conducts a decreasing of mechanical property and of flame retardant characteristics that require the replacement of the cable within a certain period of time to keep the basic function as insulation or non-flammability. This report explains the development of radiation resistant polymeric material and cable by the examination of sample $$gamma$$-ray irradiation method based on the joint research agreement with JAEA toward the J-PARC application. We studied the irradiation effect in the combination of light stabilizer and ultraviolet absorber. A current non-halogen sheath material was observed severe damage on the mechanical property by the irradiation dose of 0.5 MGy. While the developed material demonstrated excellent performance as the elongation brake at 50%, which corresponding to the self-diameter bending, kept after the irradiation dose of 2.5 MGy. The new cable manufactured with the advanced sheath material maintained at the vertical tray flame test of JIS C 3521, and accomplished to a bending test, in case of the cable was bent to a diameter 4 times of the cable outer diameter, as well as all of the development objectives were achieved successfully after the irradiation dose of 2.5 MGy.

JAEA-Review-2008-022-1.pdf:46.12MB
JAEA-Review-2008-022-2.pdf:40.74MB

This document presents the collected reports of radiation irradiation study for the candidate materials and instruments to be used in the High Intensity Proton Accelerator Facility, J-PARC. The examinations were executed at the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facility in JAEA Takasaki Institute. The effect of radiation damage by loss-beam or secondary particle beam of the accelerators influences the performance and the reliability of various instruments. The knowledge on the radiation resistivity of the materials is important to estimate the life of the equipments, the maintenance interval and dose evaluation for the personnel at the maintenance period. The radiation damage consists with mechanical property, electrical property and gas-evolution property. This report shows the subject of the instruments or the materials in the J-PARC facility, the theme of the irradiation study, the results of examination and the selected decision of the policy for usage.

Development of crosslinked rubber material for high radiation field

Nakatsukasa, Sadayoshi*; Tabasaki, Takeshi*; Kusano, Joichi; Masukawa, Fumihiro

Nihon Gomu Kyokai-Shi, 79(9), p.429 - 434, 2006/09

A new compound was developed to obtain a radiation proof crosslinked rubber which shows the excellent performance than the usual elastomer i.e. ordinary EPDM(Ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer) based one. As the first study, examinations were carried out with Co-60 $$gamma$$-ray exposure tests at the room temperature for various candidate rubbers. Based on the exposure test of various rubbers, EPDM compounds were investigated in order to improve the resistance to deterioration under high radiation field. The high performance rubber was achieved by a blend of EPDM and IIR(Butyl rubber). In addition to the polymer system, antioxidant and aromatic oil were used as admixture. The most excellent new crosslinked rubber showed no bleeding, no brooming, less change of hardness and keep 150% elongation after the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation over 7 MGy.

Gas yield and mechanical property of super insulator (polyimide and polyester) after $$gamma$$ ray irradiation

Teion Kogaku, 41(3), p.99 - 104, 2006/03

Japanese intense spallation neutron source (JSNS) driven by 3 GeV protons with power of 1 MW is constructed under the joint project of Japan Atomic Energy Agency and High Energy Accelerator Research Organization. Supercritical hydrogen of around 20K with 2 MPa is selected as a neutron moderator material and cryogenic hydrogen transfer lines are constructed from the moderators to the refrigerator. Then, a super insulator (SI) is adopted to reduce heat load in the hydrogen transfer lines. We performed irradiation test of SI using $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$ ray to evaluate the irradiation effect. Two kinds of super insulator (polyimide and polyester) coated both sides by aluminum were irradiated. After $$gamma$$ ray irradiation, tensile test and gas yield measurement of super insulator were performed. Polyester based SI became brittle at about 10 MGy, on the other hand, polyimide based SI did not loss ductility so much even 80 MGy. Polyester based SI generated gas yield higher than that of polyimide based SI about one order of magnitude. We developed the gas analysis method by using a Q-mass and a mass-flow, providing to identify the unknown gas (i.e. H$$_{2}$$O) effectively compared to a gas chromatography method.

$$gamma$$-ray irradiation experiments of collimator key components for the 3GeV-RCS of J-PARC

Kinsho, Michikazu; Ogiwara, Norio; Masukawa, Fumihiro; Takeda, Osamu; Yamamoto, Kazami; Kusano, Joichi

Proceedings of 2005 Particle Accelerator Conference (PAC '05) (CD-ROM), p.1309 - 1311, 2005/00

It was success to develop the radiation resistant components using for beam collimator. Turbo molecular pump could be operated more than 15 MGy of $$gamma$$ ray irradiation dose. Stepping motor developed at JAERI could be operated with good performance in the $$gamma$$ ray dose of more than 70 MGy. PEEK sheathed cables and connector have kept good performance during $$gamma$$ ray irradiation more than the dose of 10 MGy. It was cleared that the function of the heat pipe disappeared at 30 kGy $$gamma$$ ray irradiation dose.

An Investigation of fireproofing and airtight for floor openings in J-PARC linac building

Suganuma, Kazuaki; Anami, Shozo*; Chishiro, Etsuji; Kusano, Joichi; Ouchi, Nobuo; Yamaguchi, Seiya*

Proceedings of 1st Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan and 29th Linear Accelerator Meeting in Japan, p.248 - 250, 2004/08

Consideration have been given to the airtight and fireproofing for floor openings in J-PARC Linac building where cables, waveguides, and coaxial waveguides will penetrate. It was decided to adopt the fireploof block method for fireproofing, and to use a two-component liquid sealant for airtight. From measurement of leak rate for the proposed method for airtight, it was shown that the methods has enough margin compared with acceptable leak rate.
