Material irradiation test system had been newly installed in JMTR (Japan Materials Testing Reactor) with taking 5 years which was from 2008 through 2013. The aim of material irradiation test system is to conduct IASCC (Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking) evaluation study. This system is mainly consist of water control unit, which can simulate elevated temperature and pressure of the light water reactor environment in the reactor, and load control unit, which can perform the crack propagation examination under irradiation. This load control unit gives a load to CT (Compact Tension) specimen, and perform the crack propagation examination. The principle of loading to CT specimen is using pressure difference between pressure generated by high temperature and high pressure water by water control unit in capsule and pressure generated by load gas pressure supplied by helium gas cylinder in bellows installed in load control unit. In 2013, the commissioning of material irradiation test system was carried out for adjustment. During this commissioning, the correlation between the differential pressure in load control unit and the load was confirmed by using the test container connected to load control unit with load cell. From the results of commissioning, the problem, which the load change speeds at loading and unloading were different due to different pressure change speeds by the piping resistance performance in the periodic loading test in which load from minimum to maximum repeatedly applied, was confirmed. This report summarizes the problem of load change speed due to the piping resistance performance, which was confirmed in 2013, the improvement and performance test of load control unit for solving the problem described above, which were carried out from 2014 to 2015, and operating procedure.

The Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) Project is being pursued by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) to enhance the reliability of geological disposal technologies through investigations of the deep geological environment in the crystalline rock (granite) at Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. On the occasion of JAEA reformation in 2014, JAEA identified three remaining important issues on the geoscientific research program based on the synthesized latest results of research and development (R&D): "Development of countermeasure technologies for reducing groundwater inflow", "Development of modeling technologies for mass transport" and "Development of drift backfilling technologies". The R&D on three remaining important issues have been carrying out in the MIU Project. In this report, the current status of R&D and construction activities of the MIU Project in fiscal year 2018 is summarized.

Tono Geoscience Center (TGC) of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is being performed Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) Project, which is a broad scientific study of the deep geological environment as a basis of research and development for geological disposal of nuclear wastes, in order to establish comprehensive techniques for the investigation, analysis and assessment of the deep geological environment in fractured crystalline rock. The MIU Project has three overlapping phases: Surface-based Investigation phase (Phase I), Construction phase (Phase II), and Operation phase (Phase III). The project goals of the MIU Project from Phase I through to Phase III are: (1) to establish techniques for investigation, analysis and assessment of the deep geological environment, and (2) to develop a range of engineering for deep underground application. This report summarizes the results of geoscientific study on Phase II to 500m depth. During Construction phase, we have evaluated of adequacy of techniques for investigation, analysis and assessment of the deep geological environment on Surface-based Investigation phase, and have established systematic methodology for stepwise investigation and evaluation of the geological environment on Construction phase. Further, with respect to design and construction of underground facilities, it was confirmed the validity of the engineering involved in the construction, maintenance and management of underground facilities.

The researches on engineering technology in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory plan consists of (1) research on engineering technology at a deep underground, and (2) research on engineering technology as abasis of geological disposal. The former research mainly aimed in this study are categorized in (a) development of design and construction planning technologies, (b) development of construction technology, (c) development of countermeasure technology, (d) development of technology for security. In this study, the researches on engineering technology are proceeded in these four categories by using data measured down to GL-460m during construction as a part of the second phase of the MIU plan.

Times Cited Count:9 Percentile:37.85(Physics, Applied)We revealed that the Ba(CoMn)O (BCMO) ceramic samples exhibited ferromagnetic-dielectric behavior below the magnetic transition temperature of about 35 K. The origin of their magnetic ordering was expected to super-exchange coupling of Co()-O-Mn () with bonding angle of 180. and/or Mn()-O-Mn () with bonding angle of 90. The magnetic spin momentum estimated by the magnetic Compton profiles (MCP) of the samples had similar temperature dependence as that determined by the SQUID measurement, which meant that the observed magnetic moments could be ascribed to the spin moment. The shapes of the MCPs of the samples were completely same regardless of the temperature measured. This result indicates that there are no changes of the momentum space distribution of spin density between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states. So, this magnetic transition is simply caused by a thermal fluctuation of the spin.

JAEA has been conducting research and development at two underground research laboratory projects, in crystalline and sedimentary rock at Mizunami, Gifu and Horonobe, Hokkaido respectively. In this report, individual risk assessment methods are shown based on existing studies on general underground construction projects and complementary data and experience obtained from the Mizunami URL project. The results suggest that risk assessments on geological disposal projects can utilize this methodology to assess risk in establishing the site description model for design and safety assessment of a repository, as was done in Phase I of the Mizunami URL. Thus the proposed methodology should have broad application and additional special investigations for risk management are not likely needed.
