The mesospheric ionization signature reached below 70 km altitude and continued for ~15 min until the substorm onset, as observed by the PANSY radar and imaging riometer at Syowa Station in the Antarctic region. We also used energetic electron flux observed by the Arase and POES 15 satellites as the input for the air-shower simulation code PHITS to quantitatively estimate the mesospheric ionization rate. Combining the cutting-edge observations and simulations, we shed new light on the space weather impact of the EEP events during geomagnetically quiet times, which is important to understand the possible link between the space environment and climate.

Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

The Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2 acquired reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micron was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

We describe three specific high power laser systems that are being developed in our laboratory for many applications in high field science, nonlinear optics and material processing. We report on a femtosecond petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of 20 J of 40 fs pulse duration, a picosecond high intensity Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of 100 mJ of 0.5 ps pulse duration, and a nanosecond high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser system that can provide an average power of 360 W with a pulse duration of 30 ns delivered at a 1 kHz repetition rate. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

At an input laser pulse energy of 3.8 mJ from the OPCPA preamplifer the output energy of 130 mJ with spectral bandwidth of 2.5 nm has been obtained from multipass Yb:YAG ceramic thin disk amplifier, and the optical efficiency from LD energy to amplified laser pulse is 9.6%. The recompressed laser pulse duration was measured to be 450 fs. Because the compressor efficiency exceeds 73% the compressed pulse energy can potentially be as high as 95 mJ. The contrast level of this laser pulse was measured to be less than 7.210 at -150 ps. This novel laser system after further amplification using additional amplifiers can be useful for the laser-driven proton acceleration in future.

We demonstrate a compact, high-spatiotemporal-quality, high-intensity diode-pumped Yb:YAG thin-disk chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) laser system that incorporates a nonlinear preamplifier based on optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA). The stretched pulses are amplified in the OPCPA preamplifier and the following Yb:YAG main amplifier to 100 mJ at 10 Hz. The broadband amplified beam quality of 1.1 (horizontal direction) and 1.4 (vertical direction) times diffraction limited and pulse compression down to 470 fs with contrast of better than 10 have been achieved successfully.

We have demonstrated amplification of 1030 nm femtosecond laser pulses from a broadband Yb oscillator to over 6.5 mJ with a total gain of greater than 10 achieved in a single pass through only 56 mm of gain material at a 10 Hz repetition rate. The amplified spectral bandwidth of 10.8 nm affords recompression to a 230 fs pulse duration following amplification. As an alternative to the regenerative amplifier (RA) this system is one of the more promising candidates for realizing compact, high intensity, direct diode pumped, high repetition rate femtosecond Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) in laser systems.

The Pilot Borehole Investigation of the Ventilation Shaft was conducted in Horonobe, Hokkaido, Japan from October 2007 to March 2008. Main purpose of the investigation is to understand geological, hydrogeological and hydrochemical properties of the formation where the Ventilation Shaft has been excavated. Hydraulic packer tests show that hydraulic conductivity lies in the range from 1.1E-11 to 1.4E-7 m/sec down to 500 m in depth. This heterogeneity mainly depends on the distribution and permeability of groundwater inflow points, which were detected by Fluid Electric Conductivity logging. High conductive zones were found between 263 m and 290 m, 355 m and 370 m of the depth in the pilot borehole. An effective method for reducing groundwater inflow should be considered for the deeper Ventilation Shaft excavation.

Nonlinear processes between meso-scale structures and turbulent fluctuations in the edge region of the toroidal plasmas were studied using the bispectrum analysis. In the JFT-2M tokamak, divertor plasmas were investigated as well as the limiter plasmas, and the amplitude and phase of the bispectrum function of the potential fluctuation were found to be consistent with an analysis of the drift wave-zonal flow system. In the CHS machine, the edge plasmas during the H-mode were investigated. It was found that the edge potential begins to decrease before the decrease of the intensity of the deuterium line (by about 30ms), and the edge fluctuations are found to be composed of low frequency MHD fluctuations, drift wave like broad band electrostatic fluctuations and high frequency electromagnetic fluctuations. Nonlinear coupling between the MHD fluctuations and the electrostatic fluctuations or the electromagnetic fluctuations were found for the first time.

The results of the analyses of nonlinear processes in the plasma in JFT-2M tokamak and CHS machine are reported. In both machines, the measurements of the fluctuations were done by electrostatic probes. The obtained bicoherence and biphase from the potential data in JFT-2M were found to be close to the values obtained from a theoretical model of the interaction of the zonal flow and the drift wave turbulence. Therefore the experimentally obtained nonlinear interaction is considered to be that interaction of the zonal flow and the drift wave turbulence. By the analysis of the CHS H-mode plasma, a marked nonlinear interaction was found between a characteristic MHD magnetic fluctuation and density turbulence. By analysing the cross bispectrum of the density fluctuation and the potential fluctuation, it was found that the fluctuating particle flux is affected by the MHD oscillation. As stated above, we progressed in the investigation of the nonlinear processes of the edge plasmas.
