By the nuclear disaster of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the following tsunami on March 11, 2011, a large amount of radioactive material was released from the FDNPS. After the nuclear disaster, airborne radiation monitoring using manned helicopter was conducted around FDNPS. We have carried out the background radiation monitoring around the nuclear power stations of the whole country to apply the airborne radiation monitoring technique that has been cultivated in the aerial monitoring around FDNPS against nuclear emergency response. The results of monitoring around Shimane and Hamaoka Nuclear Power Stations in the fiscal 2018 were summarized in this report. In addition, technical issues were described.

The cryogenic irradiation system was developed with a Gifford-McMahon cryocooler to cool the sample via an oxygen-free high-conductivity copper plate by conduction cooling. The sample was a copper wire with a 250
m diameter and 99.999% purity sandwiched between two aluminum nitride ceramic sheets. The resistivity increase did not change during annealing after irradiation below 15 K. The experimental displacement cross-section for 125 MeV irradiation shows similar results to the experimental data for 1.1 and 1.94 GeV. Comparison with the calculated results indicated that the defect production efficiency in Monte Carlo codes gives a good quantitative description of the displacement cross-section in the energy region
100 MeV.

Distribution of radiocesium existing on the waterbed such as lake or pond was concerned about at the present that passed for two years by an accident. Here, the direct measurement technique of the radiocesium concentration (in-situ measurement technique) was developed. This method was used an plastic scintillation detector (p-Scanner). This detector carried out quick measurement of a large area. In addition, the count-rate of p-Scanner was converted to the radiocesium concentration (Ba/kg-wet) by comparative measurement of -ray spectrometer. We applied the technique to the agricultural pond in Fukushima and made a map of distribution of radiocesium concentration.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Results of this study showed that the HIP process in the standard HIP condition could make SS/SS HIP joint material of which tensile properties was equivalent to that of the SS base material. In addition, the effect of surface roughness at the HIP joint material on the mechanical properties of SS/SS HIP joint material was estimated.

This paper describes all the activities that were executed by JNC related to JCO criticality accident on September 30,1999. During the JCO accident, the activities of radiation monitoring, environmental monitoring, criticality termination operation, computer simulation of criticality accident, whole body exposure measurements by WBC about 24-Na, back up of local government like consultation of residents near by were performed by JNC. After the accident Japanese government and Nuclear Safety Commission establishes the investigation committee of JCO accident. JNC has also back up this activity. For example, investigation of the causes, accident scenario, estimation of the doses of the workers and personnel for deserter, counter measure operation. This paper summarizes all the important activity executed by JNC in the meantime.

The advanced water chemistry controlled irradiation research device has been developed in JAERI to perform irradiation tests for research on IASCC. The irradiation device consists of the SATCAP (Saturated Temperature Capsule) inserted into the JMTR core and the water control unit installed out-of-core. Regarding the SATCAP, thermohydraulic design of the SATCAP was performed aiming at controlling the specimen temperature with high accuracy and increasing water flow velocity on the specimen surface to improve the controllability of water chemistry. As a result of irradiation test using the new type SATCAP, each specimen temperature and water chemistry were able to be controlled as designed.

An improved analysis procedure has been introduced to evaluate irradiation field at each specimen in the irradiation capsule by using the MCNP code, which is able to model the complicated structure of the capsule directly. As the verification results, it was confirmed that the calculated fast and thermal neutron flux/fluence were agreed with measured ones within 10% and
30%, respectively, for the irradiation tests in the JMTR. Concerning gamma dose/spectrum, it was confirmed that the calculated temperature was evaluated within -3
+14% using gamma heating obtained by MCNP calculations. The evaluations of neutron flux/fluence and specimens temperature with high accuracy are therefore possible in the irradiation test of the JMTR.

JAERI has been developing irradiation technique and facilities for irradiation tests in the JMTR to improve irradiation capability keeping up with progress of nuclear fuels and materials research. This paper summarizes recent development on irradiation technique for the JMTR. Design study and installation of the IASCC (Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking) irradiation test facility was main and the most urgent task of the field in the last five years since two large projects for IASCC were planned in Japan to start irradiation tests in 2002. Almost four years were devoted to preliminary design study, detail design and installation of the facility, then IASCC irradiation test started in March, 2002. Instrumentation technique and capsules development for other research purposes also have been steadily progressing during the term, and new type of off-line temperature monitor, dual re-instrumentation device and the uniform irradiation capsule became available for the irradiation tests.
