Frost formation causes the thermal resistance for the heat transfer performance on the heat exchanger. In this study, the frost distribution on the heat exchanger used in the automobile air conditioning system was evaluated by neutron radiography imaging. At the initial stage of the frost formation, the frost formed in the upstream side of the heat exchanger. The frost deposited in the downstream region of the heat exchanger as time proceeds.

Exhaustive studies on external events that may pose a threat to the structures of nuclear facilities and evaluations of the structural integrities are critical to safety. One of the components that greatly influence the behavior of the plant structure is the connection of structural members. In particular, the modeling of the connections has relied on empirical methods, and been conservatively designed and evaluated by considering them as pinned or rigid connections. Therefore, in this research, we have aimed to develop a connection modeling method that reproduces more realistic behavior by utilizing a three-dimensional model of the connection. As the first step of this research, we planned to determine the stiffness of the connections of steel structural members. The results confirmed that the connection can be regarded as a partially-restrained connection depending on the connection specifications of the structure, and the prospects for realistic stiffness evaluation of the connection were determined.

Magnetic properties of one-dimensional quantum spin system Rb$$_2$$Cu$$_2$$Mo$$_3$$O$$_{12}$$ studied by muon spin relaxation

Rb$$_2$$Cu$$_2$$Mo$$_3$$O$$_{12}$$ is a one-dimensional quantum spin system with spin frustration. The magnetic ground state of this system has been expected to be incommensurate spin-singlet from a theoretical study. Furthermore, it was recently reported that this system exhibited ferroelectricity under a magnetic field. We carried out $$mu$$SR studies on this system to understand the magnetic properties. A slow muon spin relaxation due to nuclear dipoles is observed in the whole measured temperatures ranging from 0.06 K to 250 K, indicating that no magnetic ordering. The result suggests that the system shows a spin-singlet ground state. Furthermore, it was found that the distribution of the internal magnetic field were slightly enhanced below 10 K. This temperature dependence resembles that of the electric polarization observed in the magnetic field. It may indicate that some local anomaly of charge/spin related to the ferroelectricity is detected by a microscopic probe.

In emergency situation of nuclear facilities, we need to estimate the radiation dose due to radiation and radioactivity to grasp the influence range of the accident in the early stage. Therefore, we prepare the case studies of dose assessment for public exposure dose and personal exposure dose and contribute them to emergency procedures. This document covers about accidents of nuclear facilities in Nuclear Science Research Institute and past accident of nuclear power plant, and it can be used for inheritance of techniques of emergency dose assessment.

The general purpose Monte Carlo Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System, PHITS, is being developed through a collaboration of several institutes in Japan and Europe. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is responsible for managing the entire project. PHITS can deal with the transport of nearly all particles, including neutrons, protons, heavy ions, photons, and electrons, over wide energy ranges using various nuclear reaction models and data libraries. This paper briefly summarizes the physics models implemented in PHITS, and introduces some important functions useful for particular purposes, such as an event generator mode and beam transport functions.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and post-closure performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, based on some examples of developing method of hydro-geological structure model, acquired knowledge are arranged using the tree diagram, and model uncertainty and its influence on the evaluation items were discussed. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the developed approach for "defining conditions" has been reevaluated and improved from practical viewpoints. In addition, the uncertainty evaluation for the effect of use of cementitious material, as well as glass dissolution model, was conducted with analytical evaluation. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, based on survey of precedent procedures, multiple-approach for distribution coefficient of rocks was established, and the adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to sedimentary rock and granitic rock. Besides, an approach for solubility setting was developed including the procedure of selection of solubility limiting solid phase. The adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to key radionuclides.

This presentation briefly summarizes the physics models implemented in PHITS, and introduces some important functions for specific applications, such as an event generator mode and a radiation damage calculation function.

Following FY2011, JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, the tree diagram of methodology of groundwater travel time has been extended for crystalline rock, in addition, tree diagram for sedimentary rock newly has been organized. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the existing approach has been improved in terms of a practical task, and applied and tested for near field focusing on the buffer. In addition, the uncertainty of some important processes and its impact on safety functions are discussed though analysis. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, the approaches for parameter setting have been developed for sorption for rocks and solubility, and applied and tested through parameter setting exercises for key radionuclides.

An upgraded version of the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System, PHITS 2.52, was developed and released to public. The new version has been greatly improved from the previous released version, PHITS 2.24, in terms of not only the code itself but also the contents of its package such as attached data libraries. Owing to these improvements, PHITS became a more powerful tool for particle transport simulation applicable to various research and development fields such as nuclear technology, accelerator design, medical physics, and cosmic-ray research.

The construction of a small-size, magnetic sector, single focusing mass spectrometer (He-MS) for the continuous, on-site monitoring of the He isotope ratio ($$^{3}$$He/$$^{4}$$He) is described. The instrument is capable of measuring $$^{4}$$He/$$^{20}$$Ne ratios dissolved in several different types of natural fluids of geochemical interest, such as groundwater and gas from hot springs, volcanoes and gas well fields. Ion optics of the He-MS was designed by using the ion trajectory simulation program TRIO so as to measure $$^{3}$$He and $$^{4}$$He simultaneously with a double collector system under mass resolution power of $$>$$ 500. Presently attained specifications of the He-MS are; (1) mass resolving power of ca. 490, enough to separate $$^{3}$$He$$^{+}$$ from interfering ions, HD$$^{+}$$ and H$$_{3}$$$$^{+}$$, (2) ultra-high vacuum condition, and (3) high sensitivity enough to detect $$^{3}$$He amount 3000000 atoms).

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation phase. The topics and the conducted research are follows; (1) Study on selection of host rock: in terms of hydraulic properties, items for assessing rock property, and assessment methodology of groundwater travel time has been organized with interaction from site investigation. (2) Study on development of scenario: the existing approach has been embodied, in addition, the phenomenological understanding regarding dissolution of and nuclide release from vitrified waste, corrosion of the overpack, long-term performance of the buffer are summarized. (3) Study on setting nuclide migration parameters: the approach for parameter setting has been improved for sorption and diffusion coefficient of buffer/rock, and applied and tested for parameter setting of key radionuclides. (4) Study on ensuring quality of knowledge: framework for ensuring quality of knowledge has been studied and examined aimed at the likely disposal facility condition.

X-ray study of radiation damage in UO$$_{2}$$ irradiated with high-energy heavy ions

In order to characterize the radiation damage due to ion-track formation in UO$$_{2}$$, polycrystalline samples have been irradiated with 210-MeV Xe ions, and measured with XRD (X-ray diffraction) technique using Cu X-ray. We have also tried EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) measurement using X-ray near U L$$_{3}$$-edge. The results show that XRD technique detects damage at relatively low fluence of 10$$^{16}$$ ions/m$$^{2}$$ and higher, while the irradiation-induced change of EXAFS spectra is not observed even at highest fluence of 10$$^{19}$$ ions/m$$^{2}$$. The damage detection may be critically influenced by the depth profile of X-ray penetration.
