Eustatic change modulates exhumation in the Japanese Alps

King, G. E.*; Ahadi, F.*; 末岡 茂; Herman, F.*; Anderson, L.*; Gautheron, C.*; 塚本 すみ子*; Stalder, N.*; Biswas, R.*; Fox, M.*; et al.

Geology, 51(2), p.131 - 135, 2023/02

The exhumation of bedrock is controlled by the interplay between tectonics, surface processes, and climate. The highest exhumation rates of centimeters per year are recorded in zones of highly active tectonic convergence such as the Southern Alps of New Zealand or the Himalayan syntaxes, where high rock uplift rates combine with very active surface processes. Using a combination of different thermochronometric systems including trapped-charge thermochronometry, we show that such rates also occur in the Hida Mountain Range, Japanese Alps. Our results imply that centimeter per year rates of exhumation are more common than previously thought. Our thermochronometry data allow the development of time series of exhumation rate changes at the time scale of glacial-interglacial cycles, which show a fourfold increase in baseline rates to rates of $$sim$$10 mm/yr within the past $$sim$$65 k.y. This increase in exhumation rate is likely explained by knickpoint propagation due to a combination of very high precipitation rates, climatic change, sea-level fall, range-front faulting, and moderate rock uplift. Our data resolve centimeter-scale sub-Quaternary exhumation rate changes, which show that in regions with horizontal convergence, coupling between climate, surface processes, and tectonics can exert a significant and rapid effect on rates of exhumation.

Proceedings of International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles; Sustainable Clean Energy for the Future (FR22) (Internet), 9 Pages, 2022/04

The ARES project is planned to re-establish capabilities for transient testing SFR fuels at the TREAT facility. A full suite of complementary in-pile capability will be available for future users with devices to suit a variety of testing objectives ranging from analytical experiments to highly prototypic experimental simulations. These capabilities extend from fresh to irradiated fuels leveraging a large library of irradiated SFR fuels from EBR-II and FFTF experimental programs. The fresh fuel commissioning tests on metallic fuels will support detailed understanding of the performance of the experimental platform while adding relatively large amount of data to the existing experiment database. High burnup experiments on irradiated metallic and MOX specimens will aid to expand the existing performance envelope of advanced designs to support current and future reactor design and optimization to maximize the performance potential of these already successful fuel types.

The central parts of the Sredna Gora Zone in Bulgaria have experienced a complex Alpine tectonic evolution. The main tectonic and thermal events since the end of the Triassic are the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous (Early Alpine) and Late Cretaceous-Paleogene (Late Alpine) compression/transpression separated by Late Cretaceous island-arc magmatism and intra/back-arc extension and basin formation. During the Cenozoic, the area was mainly under post-orogenic extension. Here, we present the first apatite and zircon fission-track results and new muscovite and biotite $$^{40}$$Ar/$$^{39}$$Ar age analysis on late Carboniferous-Permian granitoids together with Late Cretaceous volcanic and subvolcanic rocks and Late Maastrichtian-Danian conglomerates from the Panagyurishte basin, which allowed us to reveal the Alpine thermal and tectonic evolution of the Central Sredna Gora Zone. Our new results disclosed the existence of several thermal and cooling episodes related to different tectonic and magmatic events in the studied area. The 40Ar/39Ar dating of samples from the metamorphic basement constrain the thermal peak of an Early Alpine thermal event at about 139-137 Ma at temperatures between $$sim$$ 300 and 400$$^{circ}$$C. Through the apatite FT dating and thermal modelling, the time of a Late Alpine (post-Danian) event was constrained at 65-55 Ma, during which the tectonically buried sediments of the Panagyurishte basin attained temperature of $$<$$ 120$$^{circ}$$C. The Cenozoic cooling and exhumation of the Central Sredna Gora Zone metamorphic basement was related to post-orogenic extension and denudation which took place probably at two stages during middle Eocene to Oligocene.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy, a key ingredient for establishing long-range order in a magnetic material down to the two-dimensional (2D) limit, is generally associated with spin-orbit interaction (SOI) involving a finite orbital angular momentum. Here we report strong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy without orbital angular momentum, emerging at the interface between two different van der Waals (vdW) materials, an archetypal metallic vdW material NbSe$$_{2}$$ possessing Zeeman-type SOI and an isotropic vdW ferromagnet V$${}_5$$Se$${}_8$$. We found that the Zeeman SOI in NbSe$$_{2}$$ induces robust out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy in V$$_{5}$$Se$$_{8}$$ down to the 2D limit with a more than 2-fold enhancement of the transition temperature. We propose a simple model that takes into account the energy gain in NbSe$$_{2}$$ in contact with a ferromagnet, which naturally explains our observations. Our results demonstrate a conceptually new magnetic proximity effect at the vdW interface, expanding the horizons of emergent phenomena achievable in vdW heterostructures.

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$$_2$$Cu$$_2$$Mo$$_3$$O$$_{12}$$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$$frac{1}{2}$$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a unique class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

The aim of this work was to investigate the $$alpha$$-decay properties of $$^{200,202}$$Fr and daughter products. Neutron-deficient francium nuclei are produced at ISOLDE-CERN bombarding a UCx target with 1.4 GeV protons. Due to the very high statistics and the high beam purity, improved decay data for $$^{202}$$Fr and its daughters were obtained. The observation of crossover transitions positioned the isomeric high-spin level of $$^{198}$$At at an excitation energy of 265(3) keV. Half-life values of 4.47(5) s and 1.28(10) s were extracted for the ground state and isomeric state of $$^{198}$$At and 52(3) ms for the ground-state decay of $$^{200}$$Fr.

Hyperfine-structure parameters and isotope shifts for the 795-nm atomic transitions in $$^{217,218,219}$$At have been measured at CERN-ISOLDE, using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique. Magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments, and changes in the nuclear mean-square charge radii, have been deduced. A large inverse odd-even staggering in radii, which may be associated with the presence of octupole collectivity, has been observed. Namely, the radius of the odd-odd isotope $$^{218}$$At has been found to be larger than the average.

Proceedings of 9th Conference on Severe Accident Research (ERMSAR 2019) (Internet), 21 Pages, 2019/03

Under the scope of analyses of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) Severe Accident (SA), estimation of Cs distribution, especially localization in the upper part of the core, has large uncertainties partly caused by the current implemented Cs-chemisorption models in SA analysis codes. This is in part due to the scarce knowledge related to Cs chemisorption mechanisms onto structure surfaces. The objective of this work is, therefore, to improve Cs chemisorption models by consolidation and extension of knowledge in the chemical process of Cs chemisorption. In this study, we will present in the first part experimental tests for grasping the phenomenology of Cs chemisorption onto stainless steel (SS) surfaces under reproductive conditions of 1F SA. The chemical factors involving in the Cs chemisorption process were investigated and implemented in an improved Cs chemisorption model based on a mass transfer theory. The second part of the study will discuss further improvement of built Cs chemisorption model to take into account revaporizaton process of Cs chemisorbed species. For such improvement, the thermodynamic properties of all possible Cs-(Fe)-Si-O chemisorbed species were provided using first-principles calculations. In the last part of the study, chemical equilibrium calculations were conducted to evaluate the relative stability of possible Cs-(Fe)-Si-O chemisorbed species in SA conditions.
