Development of fireproof sheet on glove box panels

Plutonium Fuel Production Facility was built in 1988 for the purpose of mainly producing MOX fuel of the prototype fast breeder reactor MONJU, and large glove boxes were installed for handling unsealed nuclear fuel material remotely. The panels of these glove boxes are made of acrylic, except for those installed after December 2013. For fires inside the glove box, automatic fire extinguishing systems using halides have been introduced since the beginning of construction, but for fires outside the glove box, there have been issues with direct measures for acrylic. Therefore, we have developed a fireproof sheet that mitigates the effect of fire outside the glove box on the panels as much as possible. As a result, fire-retardant sheets have been selected and attached to the glove box panels. We conducted a flammability test of the acrylic plate attached with these fireproof sheets and a usage environment influence test of fireproof sheets, and obtained good results. In addition, we set up a working group in the Plutonium Fuel Development Center in view of reducing external exposure during the work of attaching fireproof sheets, in which we discussed and examined the work procedure, and summarized it in the basic procedure manual.

Analysis of J-HBC stripper foil for the J-PARC RCS

The multi-turn charge-exchange H$$^{-}$$ beam injection scheme with stripper foils is one of the key techniques to achieve a MW-class high power proton beam. The J-PARC RCS adopts Hybrid type Boron-doped Carbon (HBC) stripper foil, which was developed in KEK to improve the lifetime. Indeed, the RCS user operation confirmed that HBC foil has the great advantage of a longer lifetime against high beam irradiation. To examine characteristics of the HBC foils, various beam studies were performed, such as the stripping efficiency measurement and long-term observation with an H$$^{-}$$ beam in the J-PARC RCS, foil analysis using RBS, EDR and PIXE methods, and SEM and TEM observation after the ion beam irradiation in Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application (TIARA) on National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST). Recently, the deposition apparatus for the HBC foils from the KEK Tsukuba-site was relocated to the JAEA Tokai-site, and we started fabrication of new HBC foil in 2017. (The new one fabricated in JAEA we call J-HBC foil.) And, we continue investigations in TIARA with the J-HBC foils. Furthermore, in-depth researches by changing the process parameters of the foil deposition are carried on. Recent results suggest that the amount of the boron doped in the foil is more important parameter than the ratio of the discharge amount of carbon from cathode and anode electrodes. In this presentation, we will report the details of recent analysis of the J-HBC foil.

We have developed a technique for neutron diffraction experiments at pressures up to 40 GPa using a Paris-Edinburgh press at the PLANET beamline in J-PARC. To increase the maximum accessible pressure, the diameter of the dimple for sample chamber at the top of the sintered diamond anvils is sequentially reduced from 4.0 mm to 1.0 mm. As a result, the maximum pressure increased and finally reached 40 GPa. By combining this technique with the beam optics which defines the gauge volume, diffraction patterns sufficient for full-structure refinements are obtainable at such pressures.

ASTRID has the objective to integrate innovative options in order to prepare the 4th generation reactors. In ASTRID, large number of tubes are installed above each fuel subassembly to monitor the core. These instrumentations such as thermocouples (TC) and Failed Fuel Detection and Location (FFDL) systems are integrated into Above Core Structure (ACS) with various sizes tubes. In the present study, the routing study for TC tubes and FFDL tubes was performed with 3D modeling and mock-up experiment of the ACS designed for ASTRID with 1500 MW thermal power in order to clarify the integration process and secure the design hypotheses. Although some problems on fabricability were found in the mock-up experiment, the possible solutions were proposed. The present study gives manufacturing feedback to design team and will contribute to increase the knowledge for ACS design and fabricability.

This paper aims to develop a methodology for understanding the fault activity by observing exposed fault planes without covering younger strata. Based on purpose, faults developed in relatively homogeneous rocks such granitic types are investigated as follows; Gosuke Dam upstream outcrop of Gosukebashi Fault and Funasaka-nishi outcrop of Rokkou Fault were selected for the study of an active fault; and K-3 outcrop of Rokkou Houraikyo Fault was chosen for a non-active fault.

After the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in March 2011, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency has newly set up a laboratory for radioactivity analysis in Fukushima. At the laboratory, radioactivity concentrations of environmental samples such as soil, water, dust filter, plant, etc., approximately 1,000 samples in a month, are measured with high-resolution $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry systems. The systems employ n-type HPGe detectors from Ortec. Since September 2012, characterization and upgrade of the systems have been performed aimed at enhancing reliability of analysis and convenience of customers. Resolving both systematic and technical issues, the laboratory has been accredited the ISO/IEC 17025 standard as a testing laboratory for radioactivity analysis.

Neutron devices such as neutron detectors, optical devices including supermirror devices and $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters, and choppers are successfully developed and installed at the Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Tokai, Japan. Four software components of MLF computational environment, instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and a database, have been developed and equipped at MLF. MLF also provides a wide variety of sample environment options including high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressures. This paper describes the current status of neutron devices, computational and sample environments at MLF.

The reference materials used for accountancy analysis by IDMS, referred to as LSD spikes allows to obtain accurate measurement results for a variety of nuclear materials under potentially difficult handling or measurement conditions. Because of expected difficulties in a stably long term supply of plutonium reference materials, which are the main source of plutonium for LSD spikes preparation, the JAEA's PFDC decided to evaluate the possibility of using domestically available MOX powders as a plutonium source material for LSD spikes. Therefore, PFDC started to separate, purify and characterize plutonium in MOX powders for plutonium reference materials (MOX-Pu) preparation that are suitable for source of LSD spikes in cooperation with the US DOE's NBL. The detailed preparation procedure of the latest MOX-Pu standard material and results of intercomparison for verification are presented.

PLANET is a high-pressure neutron beamline constructed at pulsed-neutron source in Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF) in J-PARC. The six-axis multi-anvil press designed for time of flight (TOF) neutron diffraction experiments enables routine data collection at high pressures and high temperatures up to 10 GPa and 2000 K, respectively. To obtain clean data, the beamline is equipped with the incident slits and receiving collimators that eliminate parasitic scattering from the high-pressure cell. The high performance of the diffractometer for the resolution ($$Delta d/d$$ $$sim$$ 0.6%) and the accessible d-spacing range (0.2 - 8.4 ${AA}$) together with low-parasitic scattering characteristics enables precise structure determination of crystals and liquids under high pressure and temperature conditions.

In the experimental fast reactor Joyo, it was confirmed that the top of the irradiation test sub-assembly of "MARICO-2" (material testing rig with temperature control) had been broken and bent onto the in-vessel storage rack as an obstacle and had damaged the upper core structure (UCS). This paper describes the results of the in-vessel repair techniques for UCS replacement, which are developed in Joyo. UCS replacement was successfully completed in 2014. In-vessel repair techniques for sodium cooled fast reactors (SFRs) are important in confirming its safety and integrity. In order to secure the reliability of these techniques, it was necessary to demonstrate the performance under the actual reactor environment with high temperature, high radiation dose and remained sodium. The experience and knowledge gained in UCS replacement provides valuable insights into further improvements for In-vessel repair techniques in SFRs.

The Effect of the inhomogeneity of rock mass to the tunnel support stress during tunnel excavation

In the rational tunnel support design, numerical analysis is powerful tool to know the estimation of the behavior before tunnel construction in the case of the special ground condition and limited similar construction. In order to evaluate the support structure quantitatively, it is necessary to understand the effect of the inhomogeneity of rock mass to the tunnel support stress in advance. In this study, tunnel excavation analysis considering the inhomogeneity of rock mass was carried out. The analysis results were compared with the stress measured in the tunnel support in the Horonobe underground research laboratory. As a result, it was revealed that the local stress measured in the tunnel support can be simulated by considering the inhomogeneity of rock mass stochastically. In addition, this study evaluated the effect of the inhomogeneity of rock mass to the tunnel support stress quantitatively by processing analysis results statistically.

Visualization of distribution of shear stress due to water vortex flow with SSLCC

A visualization study is performed under suction vortex geometry in water. In the experiment, the shear-sensitive liquid crystal coating (SSLCC) is applied to grasp the distribution of wall shear stress under the suction votex flow. As the result, it was found that the peak value of wall shear stress is appeared at the center and edge of the projected area of suction pipe. The non-dimensional profile of wall shear stress obtained by suction vortex flow experiment agrees well with that of numerical simulation.

The crystal structure of halophilic $$beta$$-lactamase from ${it Chromohalobacter}$ sp.560 (HaBLA) was determined using X-ray crystallography. Moreover, the locations of bound Sr$$^{2+}$$ and Cs$$^{+}$$ ions were identified by anomalous X-ray diffraction. The location of one Cs$$^{+}$$ specific binding site was identified on HaBLA even in the presence of 9-fold molar excess of Na$$^{+}$$ (90 mM Na$$^{+}$$ /10 mM Cs$$^{+}$$). This Cs$$^{+}$$ binding site is formed by two main-chain O atoms and an aromatic ring of a side chain of Trp. An aromatic ring of Trp interacts with Cs$$^{+}$$ by the cation-$$pi$$ interaction. The observation of a selective and high-affinity Cs$$^{+}$$ binding site provides important information that is useful for designing artificial Cs$$^{+}$$ binding sites useful in bioremediation of radioactive isotopes.

The quality control section of Plutonium Fuel Development Center (PFDC) in Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been analyzing isotopic compositions and content of plutonium and uranium as well as impurity and physics of nuclear materials in the process of MOX fuel fabrication for accountancy purpose as well as process control purposes. These analytical techniques are also effective for nuclear forensics to identify the source, history, and route of the material by determining a composition and chemical property of it. Therefore, PFDC cooperates with Los Alamos National Laboratory which has broad experience and established measurement skill for nuclear forensics, and evaluates the each method, procedure, and analytical data toward R&D of characterizing a nuclear fuel for forensics purposes. This paper describes the approaches to develop characterization techniques of nuclear fuel for nuclear forensic purpose at PFDC.

Weak ferromagnetic ordering disordered by Rh$$^{3+}$$ ions for LaCo$$_{0.8}$$Rh$$_{0.2}$$O$$_{3}$$

We have carried out the neutron scattering measurements for a single crystal of LaCo$$_{0.8}$$Rh$$_{0.2}$$O$$_{3}$$ in order to investigate the ferromagnetic ordering induced by Rh$$^{3+}$$ substitution for Co$$^{3+}$$ of LaCoO$$_{3}$$. The ordered moment is evaluated to be 0.4$$pm$$0.2$$mu$$$$_{B}$$, which is consistent with the saturation magnetization of LaCo$$_{0.8}$$Rh$$_{0.2}$$O$$_{3}$$. It indicates that the ferromagnetic ordering of LaCo$$_{0.8}$$Rh$$_{0.2}$$O$$_{3}$$ originates from the short-range ferromagnetic ordering disordered by Rh$$^{3+}$$ ions.
