After the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in March 2011, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency has newly set up a laboratory for radioactivity analysis in Fukushima. At the laboratory, radioactivity concentrations of environmental samples such as soil, water, dust filter, plant, etc., approximately 1,000 samples in a month, are measured with high-resolution $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry systems. The systems employ n-type HPGe detectors from Ortec. Since September 2012, characterization and upgrade of the systems have been performed aimed at enhancing reliability of analysis and convenience of customers. Resolving both systematic and technical issues, the laboratory has been accredited the ISO/IEC 17025 standard as a testing laboratory for radioactivity analysis.

Based on the regulations (the safety regulation of Tokai reprocessing plant, the safety regulation of nuclear fuel material usage facilities, the radiation safety rule, the regulation about prevention from radiation hazards due to radioisotopes, which are related with the nuclear regulatory acts, and the local agreement concerning with safety and environment conservation around nuclear facilities, the water pollution control law, and bylaw of Ibaraki prefecture), this report describes the effluent control results of liquid waste discharged from the JAEA's Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories in the fiscal year 2012, from 1st April 2012 to 31st March 2013. In this period, the concentrations and the quantities of the radioactivity in liquid waste discharged from the reprocessing plant, the plutonium fuel fabrication facilities, and the other facilities were much lower than the authorized limits of the above regulations.

Development of a superconducting proton linac is in progress in collaboration with KEK. In order to demonstrate cavity performance and to study stable accelerating field in a pulsed operation, a 600MHz superconducting cryomodule has been fabricated. The cryomodule includes two 5-cell superconducting cavities of $$beta$$=0.6 and is designed to perform 2K operation. Cold tests of the cryomodule have been performed at the temperature of 4K and 2K. In the tests, heat leak to the cavities, loaded quality factors, tuning sensitivities, frequency shifts against helium vessel pressure and Lorentz force detuning of the cavities were measured. Most of the measured data agreed with their design values, except for the heat leak and the Lorentz force detuning. As the preliminary horizontal test of the cryomodule, high power RF test has been also performed, where the surface peak fields of 10 and 16 MV/m were achieved in CW and pulsed operation, respectively. Now, the optimization of the RF control system is in progress to demonstrate stable accelerating field in a pulsed operation.

Electron spectroscopy of doubly excited states in He produced by slow collisions of He$$^{2+}$$ ions with Ba atoms

We measured ejected electron spectra caused by autoionization of doubly excited states in He atoms; the excited He was made by double electron capture of low-energy He$$^{2+}$$ ions colliding with Ba atoms. Measurements were performed by means of zero degree electron spectroscopy at projectile energies from 40 to 20 keV. Electron spectra due to autoionization from the states He(2lnl) to He+(1s) for n$$geq$$2, and those from He(3lnl) to He$$^+$$(2s or 2p) for n$$geq$$3, were observed. Line peaks in the spectra were identified by comparing observed electron spectra with those of several theoretical calculations. It was found that doubly excited states of relatively high angular momenta such as the D and F terms were conspicuously created in a quite different manner from the cases of the production of doubly excited states by the use of photon, electron, or ion impacts on neutral He atoms. Rydberg states with large n values were observed with high population in both the He(2lnl) and He(3lnl) series.
