The spallation and fragmentation reactions of $$^{136}$$Xe induced by proton, deuteron and carbon at 168 MeV/nucleon were studied at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory via the inverse kinematics technique. The cross sections of the lighter products are larger in the carbon-induced reactions due to the higher total kinetic energy of carbon. The energy dependence was investigated by comparing the newly obtained data with previous results obtained at higher reaction energies. The experimental data were compared with the results of SPACS, EPAX, PHITS and DEURACS calculations. These data serve as benchmarks for the model calculations.

We have performed zero-field muon spin rotation measurements on single crystals of La$$_{2-x}$$Sr$$_{x}$$CuO$$_{4}$$ to search for spontaneous currents in the pseudo-gap state. By comparing measurements on materials across the phase diagram, we put strict upper limits on any possible time-reversal symmetry breaking fields that could be associated with the pseudo-gap. Comparison between experimental limits and proposed circulating current states effectively eliminates the possibility that such states exist in this family of materials.

In the huge volume of research on the cuprates, there is very little that investigates the properties of the highly overdoped area of the phase diagram, where superconductivity disappears with increased carrier concentration. In the spirit of further exploring this region, we have performed the first known $$mu$$SR measurements of heavily overdoped single-crystalline La$$_{2-x}$$Sr$$_{x}$$CuO$$_{4}$$. We discovered an anomalous field-induced broadening of the internal magnetic field distribution. The broadening is linear in applied field and has a Curie-Weiss temperature dependence. Furthermore, the effect increases with doping above $$x=0.12$$ and is maximal at our highest doping ($$x=0.3$$). Possible relaxation mechanisms are discussed.

An instrument based upon high-resolution $$gamma$$-ray measurements has beentested for more than 1 year at the TokaiReprocessing Facility for determinationof plutonium concentration by K-edge absorption densitometry and for determination of plutonium isotopic fractions bytransmission-corrected passive $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry. The nondestructive assay instrument was designed and built atLos Alamos National Laboratory for theTokai Advanced Safeguards Technology Exercise (TASTEX). It was used at Tokai forthe timely assay of more than 100 productsolution samples daring the TASTEX evaluations The results were compared tosolution samples during the TASTEXaluations. The results were compared toreference values obtained by conventionaldestructive analysis of these samples. The precision and accuracy of plutoniumconcentrations measured by the K-edgetechnique are shown to be with in 0.6% (1$$sigma$$) in these applications. The precisionsand accuracies of the isotopic fractions. determined by these passive
