Proceedings of 17th International Conference on RF Superconductivity (SRF 2015) (Internet), p.1196 - 1199, 2015/12

The spoke cavity is expected to have advantages for compact ERL accelerator for X-ray source based on laser Compton scattering. We have been developing the spoke cavity under a research program of MEXT, Japan to establish the fabrication process. Since our designed shape of the spoke cavity is complicated due to increase the RF properties, we have been designing the mold including the process of press work and the support parts for vacuum tolerance with the mechanical simulation. In this paper we present status of the spoke cavity fabrication.

Proceedings of 6th International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC '15) (Internet), p.2902 - 2904, 2015/06

A 5-year research program on the development of superconducting spoke cavities for electron accelerators has been funded by MEXT, Japan since 2013. The purpose of our program is establishing design and fabrication processes of superconducting spoke cavity optimized for compact X-ray sources based on laser Compton scattering. The spoke cavity is expected to realize a compact industrial-use X-ray source with a reasonable cost and easy operation. We have chosen a cavity frequency at 325 MHz due to possible operation at 4 K and carried out cavity shape optimization in terms of electromagnetic and mechanical properties. Production of press-forming dies is also in progress. In this paper, we present overview and up-to-date status of the research program.

$$^{99m}$$Tc for medical use can be separated by thermochromatography from a molten $$^{99}$$MoO$$_{3}$$ sample. Effect of moist oxygen gas on the $$^{99m}$$Tc release from molten $$^{99}$$MoO$$_{3}$$ samples was investigated using a $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{99m}$$Tc generator. $$^{99}$$Mo was produced with $$^{100}$$Mo(n,2n)$$^{99}$$Mo. A new phenomenon has been observed: release rate, separation- and recovery-efficiencies of $$^{99m}$$Tc were higher in the moist oxygen gas than those in the dry oxygen gas. The present result is a significant progress towards the stable production of a high quality $$^{99m}$$Tc from a molten MoO$$_{3}$$ sample with high separation efficiency. The result would also give us a new insight into the interaction between the moist oxygen gas and the molten MoO$$_{3}$$.

Proceedings of 27th International Linear Accelerator Conference (LINAC 2014) (Internet), p.1030 - 1033, 2014/12

A 325 MHz superconducting spoke cavity for the electron acceleration is under development to realize a compact industrial-use X-ray source with the laser-Compton scattering. Optimum designs of the spoke cavity have been searched by using the genetic algorithm, and multipactor simulations are currently in progress to finalize the detailed design. In parallel to the design-optimization efforts, studies toward fabrication processes are also being carried out. In this paper, progresses made so far and a current situation are briefly reviewed.

$$^{99m}$$Tc, the daughter nuclide of $$^{99}$$Mo, is widely used for medical diagnosis. In Japan, about 0.9 million diagnostic procedures are carried out using $$^{99m}$$Tc. $$^{99}$$Mo has been mostly produced using $$^{235}$$U in research reactors. Because of recent shortages of $$^{99}$$Mo, a variety of alternative production methods of $$^{99}$$Mo or $$^{99m}$$Tc were proposed. We proposed to produce $$^{99}$$Mo by $$^{100}$$Mo(n,2n) using neutrons from an accelerator. The route is characterized to produce a large quantity of high-quality $$^{99}$$Mo with a minimum level of radioactive wastes, since the cross section of the $$^{100}$$Mo(n,2n)$$^{99}$$Mo reaction at 11 $$<$$ En $$<$$ 18 MeV is large, and the cross sections of the (n,He), (n,n'p), and (n,p) reactions on $$^{100}$$Mo are quite small. Intense neutrons are available because of recent progresses of accelerator and target technologies. In the talk, we show our recent experimental results to obtain $$^{99m}$$Tc with high-quality using $$^{99}$$Mo produced by $$^{100}$$Mo(n,2n).

We have launched a 5-year research program to develop superconducting spoke cavity for laser Compton scattered (LCS) photon sources combined with an energy-recovery linac and a laser. For realizing a wide use of LCS X-ray and $$gamma$$-ray sources in academic and industrial applications, we adopt a 325-MHz superconducting spoke cavity to electron beam drivers. The spoke cavity has advantages over the elliptical cavity to adopt for our proposing system. Design optimization calculation of the spoke cavity shape is being carried out using 3D electro-magnetic field simulation code with multi-objective genetic algorithm. Current progress of mechanical and fabrication design will be also presented.
