The loss of the retaining split pins (four pieces) for clevis pin were confirmed at the inspection of the pipe supports in the Monju prototype fast-breeder reactor in May, 2014. The split pins (two pieces) of ROD RESTRAINT and CONSTANT HANGER were fallen off. The split pins (two pieces) of MECHANICAL SNUBBER were broken at both ends of them. As a result of investigation, a dimple pattern was observed in a fracture surface of broken split pin. This observation result showed that fracture morphology is ductile fracture. A reproduction test, whether split pin was broken by loading the external force to the clevis pin, also gave the same fracture morphology. As the result of all cause investigation, the reason of the broken split pins is that the split pins were loaded shearing stress by the external force loaded to the clevis pin axial direction. The result of the cause investigation and a recurrence prevention measure of this trouble was be reported by this report.

The Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor, JSFR, is currently under conceptual study. The concept of JSFR's reactor system is a compact reactor system to avoid excessive increase of reactor vessel diameter with structural and fluid integrities. To realize this concept, single rotating plug with advanced refueling system is adopted. Advanced refueling system consists of column type Upper Internal Structure and pantograph type Fuel Handling Machine. To realize structural and fluid integrities, top entry piping, sodium dam and flow block/guide structures are adopted. Structural integrities against seismic displacement or thermal stress and fluid integrities against vortex cavitations or cover gas entrainment can be ensured with these designs.

This trilateral study confirms that the fundamental mission of the fast reactor is to achieve significant uranium utilization and waste management goals. Thus, fast spectrum reactor concepts are vital for nuclear fuel cycle sustainability goals. The trilateral countries agree that SFR, GFR and LFR are capable to achieve the goals. However SFR is the most matured technology from the view point of industrial deployment while GFR and LFR still require long term development before a test reactor project could begin. The trilateral common view supports fast reactor project situations in each country.

Japan Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor adopts an compacted hot reactor vessel concept. From the point of structural designs to ensure both seismic design and elevated temperature design is important. In this study, based on a common conservative seismic loading condition considered with the Niigata-ken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake, seismic evaluations were carried out, the thicknesses of reactor vessels of 750 MWe and 500 MWe output plants were determined. For both plants 50 mm was selected as the thickness, and ensured buckling evaluation margins were more than 2.4. From the point of seismic design, the difference of plant output was negligible. With the condition of 50 mm thickness of reactor vessel, thermal integrities were evaluated. For three plant start-up conditions which were 2.2, 3.2, and 4.3 days, thermal ratcheting and creep-fatigue damage were evaluated. As a result plant start-up period needed more than 3.2 days for both 750 MWe and 500 MWe output plants. Caused thermal stress were the nearly same for both plants, therefore from the point of thermal design, the difference of plant output was negligible.

Materials and Life Science Facility of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is an experimental facility where neutron and muon beams are provided as powerful probes. They are generated with high-intensity proton beam supplied through a 3-GeV proton beam transport (3NBT) line. Its beam optics and components were designed to transport the proton beam of large emittance with extremely low loss rate. The 3NBT accommodates an intermediate target that causes large beam loss. The scheme of the cascade target system was carefully devised to overcome difficulties due to high radiation.

One of the experimental facilities in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), where high-intensity neutron beams and muon beams are used as powerful probes for materials science, life science and related engineering. The neutrons and muons are generated with high-intensity proton beam from 3-GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). The high-intensity proton beam has to be effectively transported, and a neutron production target and a muon production target have to be also properly irradiated. The principal design of the 3-GeV proton beam transport facility (3NBT) is systematized.

A launching experiment of a microwave-boosted vehicle model was carried out using the 110GHz, 1MW gyrotoron and a propulsive inpulse to lift up the vehicle was measured. The rf power and pulse was 1MW and 0.175 $$sim$$ 0.8msec. The launching mechanism is as follows. Plasma is produced in the nozzle of the vehicle model when the rf beam is injected toward it. The plasma heated by the rf beam can produce a shock wave that gives a propulsive impulse to the vehicle. Maximum momentum coupling coefficient from the impulse to the vehicle is 395N/MW which is comparable to that of a laser boosted vehicle. The rf pulse was 0.175msec. The coupling coefficient is limitted by the gyrtron operation in pulse length and can increase if the pulse length is shorter than 0.175msec.

A concept of a compact reactor system for Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (JSFR) is being studied with aims including streamlining its facilities. A candidate of innovative technology for this purpose is a fuel exchange system which consists of an upper internal structure (UIS) with a radial slit and a single rotating plug, and another candidate is a "ot vessel" concept. The applicability of this structural concept has been studied by considering flow optimization, seismic resistance, thermal evaluation, etc. This paper reports the result of the applicability study.

Design study of an FBR demonstration facility is now in progress for the sodium-cooled fast reactor (JSFR). In JSFR, a seismic isolation system is adopted from the viewpoint of reduction in seismic force to major components taking into account the characteristics of the fast reactor. After the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake, a design earthquake was revised for investigation to ensure seismic resistance under a severer seismic condition. Moreover, countermeasures against various external hazards such as tsunami, etc. were investigated for the purpose of establishment of safety design guidelines and enhancement of safety. This presentation introduces the design earthquake and the seismic isolation system concept responding to the external hazards with issues for realization.
