X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis is an analytical method to obtain elemental information by detecting fluorescence X-rays emitted from a sample irradiated with X-rays. It is possible to obtain two-dimensional elemental distribution images by scanning a sample with micro X-ray beam. In this study, we developed an XRF analytical instrument to rapidly obtain the elemental distributions for moving samples on a belt conveyor by applying the micro XRF technique. X-rays were widely irradiated to the belt conveyor. The elemental distributions were measured by scanning an X-ray detector, crossing above the belt conveyor. A collimator was attached to the top of the detector to limit the analyzing area. Both detection limit and spatial resolutions for moving directions of the detector and the belt conveyor were evaluated. Finally, it was demonstrated that the multi-elemental imaging was possible with the developed XRF instrument.

We performed proof-of-principle experiments to demonstrate the removal capability of metal parts, where we focused on the observation of removal processes from a metallic sample using a 5.5-kW continuous wave fiber laser combined with continuous and pulsed water jets.

In decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, a retrieval process of fuel debris in the Primary Containment Vessel by a remote operation is one of the key issues. In this process, prevention of spreading radioactive materials is one of the important considerations. Furthermore, an applicable technique to the process requires keeping of reasonable processing-efficiency. We propose to use the combined technique including a laser light and a water jet as a retrieval technique of the fuel debris. The laser processing technique combined with a repetitive pulsed water jet could perform an efficient retrieval processing. Our experimental result encourages us to promote further development of the technique towards a real application at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

The number of research reactors in the world is decreasing because of their aging. However, the planning to introduce the nuclear power plants is increasing in Asian countries. In these Asian countries, the key issue is the human resource development for operation and management of nuclear power plants after constructed them, and also the necessity of research reactor, which is used for lifetime extension of LWRs, progress of the science and technology, expansion of industry use, human resources training and so on, is increasing. From above backgrounds, the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center began to discuss basic concept of a multipurpose low-power research reactor for education and training, etc. This design study is expected to contribute not only to design tool improvement and human resources development in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center but also to maintain and upgrade the technology on research reactors in nuclear power-related companies. This report treats the activities of the working group from July 2010 to June 2011 on the multipurpose low-power research reactor in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center and nuclear power-related companies.

The radiolytic stabilities of the organic extractants for the separation of actinides have been commonly evaluated by the irradiation with -rays as the most convenient method. However in the actual partitioning process of HLW, the extractants will be exposed to alpha-particles emitted from actinides, as well as beta- and -rays from various fission products. In this study, alpha-radiolysis of -tetraoctyldiglycolamide (TODGA) in -dodecane was investigated by the irradiation with helium ion beam accelerated by a tandem accelerator using the TC1 irradiation apparatus in the TIARA facility. The sample was also irradiated with Co -rays for comparison of the radiation chemical yields between - and -rays. It was found that TODGA had almost fourfold resistance to -rays, as compared with -rays. This result suggests that the radiolytic degradation of TODGA has been hitherto overestimated only by the irradiation with -rays.

In this study, -radiolysis of TODGA in -dodecane was investigated by the irradiation with helium ion beam accelerated by the AVF cyclotron or the tandem accelerator in the TIARA facility at JAEA Takasaki. It was found that the radiation chemical yield for the degradation of TODGA by helium ion beam irradiation was less than that by -rays irradiation. It was also observed the radiation chemical yield gradually increased with the incident energy of helium ions. These results indicate that the radiolytic degradation of TODGA is reduced by high LET radiations such as -particles. Because the radical cations of -dodecane, which contribute to the charge transfer reaction described above, decrease by recombination in track.

Many diamide-type extractants were synthesized and tested for the extraction of actinides (III), (IV), (V) and (VI). The diglycolamides (DGA) with two amidic oxygen and one ether oxygen, which show the tridentate feature, have the high extractability of actinides (An). In order to increase the lipophilic property, the diglycolamides with the different functional groups attached to N atoms were synthesized and examined for their extractability. It was found that tetraoctyl-diglycolamide (TODGA) and tetradecyl-diglycolamide (TDDGA) exhibit the satisfactory dissolution into dodecane with less solubility in HO. The results of various metal extractions using TODGA revealed that the divalent, trivalent and tetravalent metals with ionic radius of 90-120 pm gave notably high D values. After elucidation of the effect on substitution of the functional group, the chemical form of DGA to have high performance on An extraction was proposed.
