Benchmarks of iron nuclear data for fusion neutron sources

In order to evaluate the accuracy of the iron data in the latest nuclear data libraries (FENDL-3.2b, JENDL-5, ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3) used in the fusion neutron source design, we performed their benchmark tests by using QST/TIARA iron experiment with quasi mono-energy neutrons of 40 and 65 MeV and JAEA/FNS iron experiment with DT neutrons. From the test results, we have found the following issues; (1) The calculation results with FENDL-3.2b underestimate the measured neutron fluxes of the continuous energy range (10-60 MeV) by a factor of 0.6 in the TIARA experiment with 65 MeV neutrons; (2) The calculation results with FENDL-3.2b tend to underestimate the measured neutron flux above 10 MeV by a factor of 0.8 at depth of 70 cm and overestimate the measured ones below 10 keV by a factor of 1.3 up to depth of 40 cm in the FNS experiment. We investigated those issues in detail and clarified their reasons.

Radiotherapy package based on Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (RT-PHITS) enables to calculate the 3-dimensional dose distribution inside patients using their individual SPECT/CT images coupled with the Monte Carlo radiation transport simulation. Based on the regulations (the safety regulation of Tokai Reprocessing Plant, the safety regulation of nuclear fuel material usage facilities, the radiation safety rule, the regulation about prevention from radiation hazards due to radioisotopes, which are related with the nuclear regulatory acts, the local agreement concerning with safety and environment conservation around nuclear facilities, the water pollution prevention act, and by law of Ibaraki Prefecture), the effluent control of liquid waste discharged from the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories of Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been performed. This report describes the effluent control results of the liquid waste in the fiscal year 2023. In this period, the concentrations and the quantities of the radioactivity in liquid waste discharged from the reprocessing plant, the plutonium fuel fabrication facilities, and the other nuclear fuel material usage facilities were much lower than the limits authorized by the above regulations.

In-situ X-ray imaging of the breakup dynamics of current-carrying molten metal jets during arc discharge

The flow dynamics of current-carrying molten metal jet breakup during arc discharge serves as mass and heat sources in wire-arc-based metal deposition processes, thereby optimizing the resultant product quality. However, the spatiotemporal flow interaction between the molten metal jet and the surrounding arc plasma remains unclear. Here, using in-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging, we simultaneously track surface deformation and internal flow in molten aluminum jets during argon arc discharge. We reveal that modulating the magnitude and path of the arc discharge current can accelerate the jet velocity by 200 $$sim$$ 300% beyond its initial injection speed, thereby facilitating significant jet elongation. Our results provide consistent evidence that the jet flow dynamics are predominantly governed by the interaction between the arc discharge current and its coaxial self-induced magnetic field. This study establishes a framework at the intersection of fluid dynamics and electromagnetism, contributing to optimized control and precision in wire-arc-based applications.

This study proposes a method that combines sliding mode control and neural networks as a control method for unmanned surface vehicle to measure radiation in submarine soil. Sliding mode control is used as the base of control input, and corrective inputs are added using a neural network controller so that one of the parameters of sliding mode control, $$sigma$$, and its rate of change are reduced. After producing a control system using this method, we conducted simulation tests and sea area tests to evaluate whether the survey could be conducted using this method.

We have been developing "Non-destructive electrostatic septum" for a slow extraction. This septum has multiple electrodes placed around the region without the beam hitting and separate the beam by its electric field. To evaluate its electric field, we have built a prototype septum and a test machine, which consists of an electron gun and monitors. This test machine can measure the electric field indirectly by using a narrow electron beam. The experiment results of prototype septum is good agreement with the calculation one. However, this electric field distribution is not enough to separate the beam. A step function-like electric field distribution is ideal for the beam separation with minimal negative effect on the beam. We have studied to improve the electrode configuration to match the beam shape. In this paper, we present the result of the electric field measurements and the septum improvement. Additionally, we describe the future plan of this development.

Study on simulation code for transverse instabilities for the J-PARC MR

The J-PARC main ring (MR) will be increased to 1.3 MW. To cope with the increase in beam intensity, the intra-bunch feedback system (IBFB) needs to be upgraded to handle higher frequencies up to about 200 MHz. To evaluate the performance and understand the optimal parameters after this upgrade, we are developing a particle tracking simulation that includes the necessary components. The recoherence period induced by chromaticity between tracking simulations and experiments are compared and it cannot be discribed by the simple simulations, and we investigate what mechanisms explain this result. The shift of synchrotron tune caused by longitudinal wakes using tracking simulations are calculated and it find that introducing the effect of longitudinal wakes only does not explain the recoherence period in the experimental results.

Detailed $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope $$^{28}$$Ne has been performed using the one-neutron removal reaction from $$^{29}$$Ne. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for $$^{28}$$Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.
