Times Cited Count:5 Percentile:87.42(Nuclear Science & Technology)In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

Times Cited Count:11 Percentile:54.04(Engineering, Geological)In order to identify specific chemical changes induced by recent, near-surface faulting, we compared two faults of different size and evolutionary history, the active Shiraki-Nyu Fault and a nearby minor, inactive fault in central Japan, in terms of their mineralogical and geochemical features. Our analyses suggest that (1) chemical changes such as depletion of NaO and CaO derived from smectite and illite formation, and that changes such as increase of U, Y and REEs derived from absorption to these clay minerals, occurred during the fault initiation and subsequent retrograde alteration and are identical in the two faults, and that (2) MnO increase accompanied by FeO depletion and a positive Ce anomaly can be a key to identify specific chemical changes due to recent, near-surface faulting, because this could be related to upward migration and oxidation of fault-driven reduced fluids from deep underground to the near-surface environment.

This paper aims to develop a methodology for understanding the fault activity by observing exposed fault planes without covering younger strata. Based on purpose, faults developed in relatively homogeneous rocks such granitic types are investigated as follows; Gosuke Dam upstream outcrop of Gosukebashi Fault and Funasaka-nishi outcrop of Rokkou Fault were selected for the study of an active fault; and K-3 outcrop of Rokkou Houraikyo Fault was chosen for a non-active fault.

JAEA has been conducting the Instructor Training Program (ITP) since 1996 under the auspices of MEXT to contribute to human resource development in currently 11 Asian countries in the field of radiation utilization for seeking peaceful use of nuclear energy. ITP consists of Instructor Training Course (ITC), Follow-up Training Course (FTC) and Nuclear Technology Seminars. In the ITP, trainings or seminars relating to technology for nuclear utilization are held in Japan by inviting nuclear related people from Asian countries to Japan and after that, the past trainees are supported during FTC by dispatching Japanese specialists to Asian countries. News Letter is also prepared to provide the broad range of information obtained through the trainings for local people near NPPs in Japan. The present report describes the activities of FY2014 ITP and future challenges for improving ITP more effectively.

Staples for a stapler can be used as a frame of a small oriented sample taken from fragile and scarce fault gouge. The fault gouge was slotted for staples of an insert. Staples are a group of about ten or less ones holding right-angled three small surfaces. Pre-oriented staples set the slot would remove then presented for the SEM observation. Only a knife, some glues and simple equipment are needed for the method in the field or laboratories.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has excavating three deep shafts through soft sedimentary rock at Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory. In this paper, the author discussed change in stress and the stress distribution in a concrete lining and steel arch sets induced by the 6.5 m diameter shaft sinking. They conducted not only field measurements of stress in support elements at around 220 m in depth but also three-dimensional numerical analysis which models the shaft excavation procedure such as timing of installation of support elements and setting and removal of a concrete form. As a result, it was clarified that more than 10 MPa difference in circumferential stress occurred in a 2 m high and 400 mm thick concrete lining due to anisotropy of initial stress and three-dimensional effect of an excavation face. It was also found that a concrete lining gradually deformed from an original cylindrical form to an "oval salad bowl" form with the long axis pallarel to the direction of the minimum horizontal principal stress after a concrete form was removed.

The flower colour of gra6 (wild-type) is pink-purple in the flower. On the other hand, flowers of gra50 (white-flowered variant) exhibit a white colour in its flower. In this study, the relationship between floral pigmentation and expression of several anthocyanin biosynthesis genes was investigated in gra6 and gra50. The pigments in the flower consist mainly of malvidin 3,5-diglucoside in gra6. White-flowered gra50 possessed lower amounts of anthocyanins, but higher amounts of flavonols compared to gra6. Gene expression analysis demonstrated that expression of the dihydroflavonol 4-reductase gene 2 () was lower in gra50 compared with gra6, whereas the expression of other key genes did not differ greatly. These results suggest that the white-flowered variant of gra50 may result from a defect in expression of the gene.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Times Cited Count:17 Percentile:51.15(Chemistry, Physical)Electronic and spin states of the codeposited C-Co films with large tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) effect were investigated with the X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. It is revealed that a C-Co compound generated in the C-Co films shows the clear MCD signal attributed to the spin-polarized Co 3d states hybridized with C orbitals. The magnetic response of these Co 3d-derived states agrees well with temperature dependence of the observed MR ratios of the granular C-Co films. This suggests the incorporation of the spin-polarized Co 3d-derived states of the C-Co compound into the observed TMR effect.

Recently, we have found the appearance of substantial MR ratio (80%) in a C/Co hybrid material. Such the MR ratio cannot be explained enough only by tunnel conduction through Co grains. Therefore, to obtain information about electronic structures of C/Co hybrid material is necessary. Absorption spectra of CCo are different from that of pristine C. In particular, peak intensity corresponding to (LUMO) C 1s excitation of CCo is clearly attenuated. In addition, C 1s photoelectron peak of CCo slightly shifted to lower binding energy compared to that of pristine C. These results indicate that 3d electron of Co transfers to orbital of C and new electronic states are formed in the C-Co compound. In fact, XPS spectra of valence excitation region also demonstrate the formation of hybrid orbital near the Fermi level due to the coupling of C and Co.

H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

The structural parameter and the electronic structure of the complex between cerium and N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-diphenylpyridine-2,6-carboxyamide(DMDPhPDA) was investigated by XAFS, photo luminescence and excitation spectra. The DMDPhPDA is one of the promising ligands for separation of trivalent actinides from lanthanides. The Ce-K XAFS spectra were measured at BL11XU of SPring-8. The bond distances between the carbonyl oxygens and cerium, and between the pyridyl nitrogen and cerium are 253pm and 264pm, respectively. The bond angle of the plane consisting of the two carbonyl oxygens and nitrogen with cerium was about 180 degree. This complex was a yellow color unique for the DMDPhPDA-lanthanide complexes. The photo absorption peak for the complex was extremely broad, and the peak position was at a higher wavenumber as compared with those for the other lanthanide complexes. The peak in the highest wavenumber of this band may be attributed to the transition between f and d orbitals, which are greatly influenced by the ligand field of the DMDPhPDA. The XANES spectrum of the cerium complex clearly showed that cerium was trivalent.
