Proceedings of 20th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering and the ASME 2012 Power Conference (ICONE-20 & POWER 2012) (DVD-ROM), 8 Pages, 2012/07

In PUREX process for spent fuel reprocessing plants, heating portions in the components are severely corroded in the boiling solution under heat transfer (HT) conditions. In this paper, authors have focused on the effects of surface temperature and heat flux on corrosion rates (CRs) of stainless steels in boiling nitric acid under HT conditions. Two types of cells for HT and immersion conditions were applied for corrosion tests. Test solution used was 33 mol/m$$^{3}$$ vanadium added to 3 kmol/m$$^{3}$$ nitric acid solution, and was heated at boiling temperature under atmospheric pressure. Additionally, a boiling curve which was indicated the relation between heat flux and degree of superheating was investigated experimentally. Surface temperatures during corrosion tests were estimated from a boiling curve. The results showed that CR did not depend on heat flux, but depended on surface temperature. Arrhenius plots on CRs indicated that CR was accelerated by solution boiling against non-boiling.

In Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), individual monitoring and dose data recording for radiation workers have been conducted since 1957, the next year of which JAERI was established. This report compiles the statistics of individual doses, such as average doses, collective doses, the number of radiation workers and dose distributions, over the past 48 years from 1957 to 2005, when JAERI merged with Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute into Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Transition of the statistics showed the history of radiation works in JAERI and many efforts for dose reduction based on the ALARA principle recommended by ICRP. In addition, it was found from the analysis of cumulative distributions that, in recent years, there was a specific work-group exposed to significantly high dose compared with other workers.

Japanese Government decided that Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute ( JAERI ) and Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute ( JNC ) shall be consolidated to a New rganization as of October 2005, which organization would be an Institute for comprehensive research and development for atomic.Through the preparation for unification, JAERI and JNC have been developing the Decommissioning program for own facilities, estimating decommissioning cost and the amount of waste from the decommissioning, and developing Management Program. Planning the Decommissioning program, it is important to estimate decommissioning cost effectively, because JAERI and JNC retain about 230 nuclear facilities which are reactors, fuel cycle facilities and research facilities. Then the decommissioning cost estimation method has developed based on several dismantling and replacement experiences. This method has adopted more estimation fomulae for decommissioning various works than ever, so as to be more reliable. And decommissioning cost for the facilities has estimated under the common condition. This method would be improved, reflecting future nuclear facilities dismantling and replacement events. This paper shows the cost estimation method for nuclear facilities and cost evaluation result for about 230 facilities of both JAERI and JNC.

Effect of metal surface temperature and solution boiling on corrosion of stainless steel in boiling nitric acid solution at heating portion was studied to investigate ageing behavior of the components in spent fuel reprocessing plant. Corrosion tests under the conditions of heat transfer and immersion in atmospheric pressure were carried out using nitric acid solution including Vanadium. As the results, apparent activation energies of thermal dependences on corrosion rates of both the heat transfer and the immersion were indicated approximately 40 kJ/mol. Corrosion rate under the boiling condition were higher about 7 times for the non-boiling condition.

Dependence of the yields of AP sites and AP clusters produced in pUC18 plasmid DNA on scavenging capacity and radiation quality

Many studies using synthetic AP clusters reported that AP clusters retard base excision repair processes. Sutherland et al. (2002) showed that AP clusters are induced efficiently in human cells by low LET X-irradiation with the similar yields with those for the pyrimidine or purine base lesion clusters. There, however, has been very little knowledge of AP sites and AP clusters induced by high LET radiation. In order to clarify the relation between track structure of C ions or X-rays and the induction processes of an AP or AP clusters, we measure the yield of AP sites visualized by the treatment of irradiated pUC18 plasmid DNA with the AP endoclease (Nfo), which converts an AP site to detectable single strand break. Several scavenging capacities of the samples are tested to estimate the effect of indirect action of diffusible OH radicals. These experimental data will be discussed with theoretical radiation track structure in the respect of repair susceptibility of the AP cluster.

There has been very little knowledge of AP sites and AP clusters induced by heavy ion beam irradiation. In order to clarify the relation between track structure of C ions (290MeV/nucleon, LET 13, 60keV/$$mu$$m) or X-rays and the induction processes of an AP or AP clusters, we measure the yield of AP sites visualized by the treatment of irradiated pUC18 plasmid DNA with the AP endoclease (Nfo), which converts an AP site to detectable single strand break. Several scavenging capacities of the samples are tested to estimate the effect of indirect action of diffusible OH radicals in the induction of AP site. These experimental data will be discussed with theoretical radiation track structure in the respect of repair susceptibility of the AP cluster.
