Japan Atomic Energy Agency formulated the plan to achieve the medium-term target in the period of April 2010 to March 2015(hereinafter referred to as "the second medium-term plan"). JAEA determined the plan for the business operations of each year (hereinafter referred to as "the year plan"). This report is that the Sector of Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management has summarized the results of the decommissioning technology development and decommissioning of nuclear facilities which were carried out in the second medium-term plan.

Lithium intercalation and structural changes at the LiCoO$$_{2}$$ surface under high voltage battery operation

An epitaxial-film model electrode of LiCoO$$_{2}$$(104) was fabricated on SrRuO$$_{3}$$(100)/Nb:SrTiO$$_{3}$$(100) using pulsed laser deposition. The 50 nm thick LiCoO$$_{2}$$(104) film exhibited lithium (de-)intercalation activity with a first discharge capacity of 119 mAh g$$^{-1}$$ between 3.0 and 4.4 V, followed by a gradual capacity fading with subsequent charge-discharge cycles. In contrast, a 3.2 nm thick Li$$_{3}$$PO$$_{4}$$-coated film exhibited a higher intercalation capacity of 148 mAh g$$^{-1}$$ with superior cycle retention than the uncoated film. In situ surface X-ray diffraction measurements revealed a small lattice change at the coated surface during the (de-)intercalation processes compared to the uncoated surface. The surface modification of LiCoO$$_{2}$$ by the Li$$_{3}$$PO$$_{4}$$ coating could lead to improvement of the structural stability at the surface region during lithium (de-)intercalation at high voltage.

It is essential for a stable plasma equilibrium control to reconstruct an accurate plasma boundary in tokamak devices. Cauchy Condition Surface (CCS) method is a numerical approach to calculate the spatial distribution of the magnetic flux outside a hypothetical plasma surface and reconstruct the plasma boundary from the magnetic measurements located outside the plasma. It is found that the optimum number of unknown parameters and shape of the CCS for minimizing errors in the reconstructed plasma shape increase in proportion to the plasma size. It is shown that the accuracy of the plasma shape reconstruction greatly improves by using the optimum number of unknown parameters. The assessment of accuracy of plasma shape reconstruction by CCS method in JT-60SA is reported.

We describe three specific high power laser systems that are being developed in our laboratory for many applications in high field science, nonlinear optics and material processing. We report on a femtosecond petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of 20 J of 40 fs pulse duration, a picosecond high intensity Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of 100 mJ of 0.5 ps pulse duration, and a nanosecond high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser system that can provide an average power of 360 W with a pulse duration of 30 ns delivered at a 1 kHz repetition rate. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

Study of plasma equilibrium control for JT-60SA using MECS

The precise control of the plasma position is essential in safe and stable plasma operation. An MHD equilibrium control simulator has been developed in order to study the techniques of plasma equilibrium control for JT-60SA. In this study, the modules of plasma shape reconstruction, power supply, PF and FPPC coils are incorporated in order to simulate the real plasma equilibrium control. The plasma equilibrium control is simulated during Ip ramp-up within the power supply capability using MECS.

The precise control of the plasma position is a key issue in safe and stable plasma operation. A plasma equilibrium control simulator has been developed in order to study the techniques of plasma equilibrium control for JT-60SA. The simulator consists of an equilibrium solver and controller. The equilibrium solver identifies the plasma equilibrium under the given coil current and unknown eddy current by iteration. The function which calculates the self-consistent $$I$$$$_{rm p}$$ with magnetic flux consumption has been incorporated in order to simulate the $$I$$$$_{rm p}$$ control. The waveforms of JT-60SA plasma operation scenario during the $$I$$$$_{rm p}$$ ramp-up and the controllability of the plasma equilibrium control using the equilibrium control simulator were reported.

This paper reviews techniques for improving the temporal contrast and spatial beam quality in an ultra-intense laser system that is based on chirped-pulse amplification (CPA). We describe the design, performance, and characterization of our laser system, which has the potential for achieving a peak power of 600 TW. We also describe applications of the laser system in the relativistically dominant regime of laser-matter interactions and discuss a compact, high efficiency diode-pumped laser system.

The plasma position and shape control is important issue in JT-60SA, ITER and future fusion reactor. In order to study the plasma position and shape control, we have developed a simulator which consists of an equilibrium solver and an "isoflux" controller. It is possible to simulate the position and shape control by using the "isoflux" technique and optimize the control logic of coil current in JT-60SA. It was demonstrated that the simulator can simulate the position and shape control in response to prescribed change in the configuration and internal parameters.

High intensity, high temporal contrast, high repetition-rate laser for laser driven particle acceleration

We have reported hundred mJ level, femtosecond pulse duration with the high temporal contrast in an OPCPA/Yb:YAG ceramic thin disk laser system at 10 Hz repetition rate. At an input laser pulse energy of 3.8 mJ from the OPCPA preamplifer the output energy of 130 mJ with spectral bandwidth of 2.5 nm has been obtained from multipass Yb:YAG ceramic thin disk amplifier, and the optical efficiency from LD energy to amplified laser pulse is 9.6%. The recompressed laser pulse duration was measured to be 450 fs. Because the compressor efficiency exceeds 73% the compressed pulse energy can potentially be as high as 95 mJ. The contrast level of this laser pulse was measured to be less than 7.2$$times$$10$$^{-9}$$ at -150 ps. This novel laser system after further amplification using additional amplifiers can be useful for the laser-driven proton acceleration in future.
