To accurately determine the external exposure dose, it is desirable to examine the analysis of the CO radical intensity. We examined ESR spectra of teeth of 10 macaques captured in Fukushima by two spectrum-decomposition algorithms.

In a mercury target of the J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex), pulsed proton beams repeatedly bombard the flowing mercury which is confined in a stainless-steel vessel (target vessel). Cavitation damage caused by the propagation of the pressure waves is a factor of the life of the target vessel. As a measure to reduce damages, we developed a bubbler to inject the gas microbubbles into the flowing mercury, which can reduce the pressure waves. To operate the mercury target vessel stably with the 1 MW high-intensity proton beams, further reduction of the damage is required. The bubbler setting position should be closer to the beam window to increase the bubble population, which could enhance the reduction effect on the pressure waves and damage. However, the space at the beam window of the target vessel is restricted. The bubbler design and setting position as well as the vane design for the mercury flowing pattern are optimized by means of a machine learning technique to get more suitable bubble distribution, increasing in bubble population and optimizing bubble size nearby the beam window of the target vessel. The results of CFD analyses performed with 1000 cases were used for machine learning. Since the flow rate of mercury affects the temperature of the target vessel, this was used for the constraint condition. As a result, we found a design of mercury target vessel that can increase the bubble population by ca. 20% higher than the current design.

The balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant activity, which is a defense mechanism against oxidative stress, was investigated in the liver and bladder of wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima Prefecture. No significant induction of oxidative stress by exposure to environmental radionuclides after the Fukushima nuclear accident was observed, suggesting that the stress defense mechanism of the organism is activated in some organs.

To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

Radioactive wastes were generated and stored in the hot cell of Operation Testing Laboratory of Tokai Reprocessing Plant due to the experiments related to the reprocessing technology development from 1974 to 2014. Waste removal work was strengthened by the shift work in the past, however another wastes were generated by the equipment dismantling. From 2006, an improved waste removal method was established by using bag-out technique and wastes were taken from the glove-box connected to the hot cell. The removal period, estimated from the conventional method using Cask No. 10, was reduced from 14 to 5 years. From 2016, upgrade of worker's awareness including related departments was performed by various software and hardware improvements. Also, the worker's skills were improved and equipment in Cask No.10 was checked for preventive maintenance. The prevention measures for past troubles were discussed with Radiation Control Department. In addition, transportation schedule including safety operation with Transportation Department and Waste Receiving Department was optimized to maintain the waste removal cycle. The removal period was reduced from 5 to 3 years by the above efforts. Finally, the work was completed in March 2020.

We observed inelastic peaks at eV coming from the hyperfine splitting in the magnetically ordered phase due to the hyperfine interactions between Nd nuclei (=7/2) and the 4 electrons with ground state composed of mainly . At very low temperatures, nuclear spin of Nd is polarized with increasing occupation probability of low energy levels and contributes to the enhancement of the antiferromagnetic Bragg intensities: the elastic non-spin-flip channel is dominant. As an application of this phenomenon, we determined the Nd moment and hyperfine splitting from the temperature dependence of an antiferromagnetic Bragg intensities for NdPdGe.

Band gap and Frenkel defect formation energy were used to analyze defect equilibria. Oxygen partial pressure dependence of defect equilibria was evaluated based on oxygen potential experimental data and DFT calculation, and a Brouwer diagram was derived. The defect formation energies, including Frenkel defect, electron-hole pair and so on, were determined and used to evaluate the properties, including oxygen diffusion coefficients, electrical conduction, heat capacity and thermal conductivity. Mechanisms of various properties were discussed for a deeper understanding based on defect chemistry, and the relationship among properties were systematically described.

This is achieved by using a newly developed double chamber system to separate the recoil chamber and the reaction one, thereby avoiding the decomposition of reactive molecules by the projectile ion beam, which hinders the synthesis of carbonyl complexes. The feasibility of this method was verified by synthesizing 5d metal short-lived isotopes as homologous element isotopes of the light transactinide elements Sg, Bh, Hs, and Mt at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency tandem accelerator and conducting model experiments.

At the Oarai Research and Development Institute of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, experimental studies in various sodium environments are being conducted in connection with the research and development of sodium-cooled fast reactors such as the experimental fast reactor Joyo and the prototype fast reactor Monju. The dismantling of sodium test facilities and equipment that have achieved their purpose has been carried out sequentially, and a wealth of experience and technology has been accumulated. On the other hand, a large amount of metallic sodium used for research and testing is being reused for new testing facilities, and the large sodium tanks that contained the metallic sodium are being dismantled. In order to dismantle these tanks safely and efficiently, it is important to reduce the residual sodium inside the tanks (especially at the bottom) as much as possible before dismantling. Therefore, we have been working on the reduction of residual sodium at the bottom of several large sodium tanks of 100 m class. This report describes the technologies and experiences related to the reduction of residual sodium that have been carried out so far.

Under the exact same chemical conditions, comparative studies with the lighter homologs of group-5 in the Periodic Table clearly indicate the volatility sequence being NbOCl TaOCl DbOCl. From the obtained experimental results, thermochemical data for DbOCl were derived. The present study delivers reliable experimental information for theoretical calculations on the chemical properties of transactinides.

In this study, we analysed the morphological characteristics of the testes and in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacity of cryopreserved sperm of raccoons from the ex-evacuation zone of the FDNPP accident. This study revealed that the chronic and LDR radiation exposure associated with the FDNPP accident had no adverse effect on the reproductive characteristics and functions of male raccoons.

For the improvement of the structural integrity assessment methodology on reactor pressure vessels (RPVs), the probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) analysis code PASCAL has been developed and improved in Japan Atomic Energy Agency based on the latest knowledge. The PASCAL code evaluates the failure probabilities and frequencies of Japanese RPVs under transient events such as pressure thermal shock considering neutron irradiation embrittlement. In order to confirm the reliability of the PASCAL as a domestic standard code and to promote the application of PFM on the domestic structural integrity assessments of RPVs, it is important to perform verification activities, and summarize the verification processes and results as a document. On the basis of these backgrounds, we established a working group, composed of experts on this field besides the developers, on the verification of the PASCAL module and the source program of PASCAL was released to the members of working group. This report summarizes the activities of the working group on the verification of PASCAL in FY2016 and FY2017.

Using the dose response curve, external exposure dose for seven wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima prefecture were examined. The results suggest that the external exposure dose for the wild Japanese macaques were ranged between 45 mGy to 300 mGy.
