Electronic structure of the MgZnY alloy showed a semi-metallic electronic structure with a pseudo-gap at the Fermi level. The observed electronic structure of the MgZnY alloy suggests that the presence of a pseudogap structure is responsible for phase stability.

The counter-flow diffusion experiment device was employed to analyze the reaction path and reaction products using laser diagnostics. The main product of sodium-water reaction was determined to be NaOH and the sodium oxide was not notably measured compared with NaOH.

The pH had a little effect on the distribution coefficients (Kd) in 0.01 M NaNO, whereas the Kd strongly depended on pH at 1 M NaNO. A cation exchange model combined with a one-site non-electrostatic surface complexation model was successfully applied to the measured Kd. The TRLFS spectra of Eu sorbed were processed by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), which corresponded to one outer-sphere (factor A) and two inner-sphere (factor B and C) complexes. It turned out that factors A and B correspond to Eu sorbed by ion exchange sites and inner-sphere complexation with hydroxyl groups of the edge faces, respectively. Factor C became dominant at relatively high pH and ionic strength and likely correspond to the precipitation of Eu(OH) on the surface.

Therefore a treatment planning system based on Monte Carlo simulation having better accuracy is highly desired. In order to assess the simulation accuracy of a Monte Carlo simulation code in situations closely related to medical application, we performed a comparison of dose distribution in a biological sample obtained by experiment and that by simulation. In particular, we irradiate a carbon beam on a biological sample composed of fresh chicken meat and bones, with a PAGAT gel dosimeter placed behind it, and compare the complex dose distribution in the gel dosimeter created by the beam passing through the inhomogeneous sample. Monte Carlo simulation using PHITS code was conducted by reconstructing the biological sample from its computed tomography images. The simulation accurately reproduced the experimental distal edge structure of the dose distribution with an accuracy under about 2 mm.

In Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System PHITS, two parallel computing functions are prepared to reduce the computational time. One is the distributed-memory parallelization using message passing interface (MPI) and the other is the shared-memory parallelization using OpenMP directives. Each function has advantages and disadvantages, and thus, by adopting both functions in PHITS, it is possible to conduct parallel computing suited for needs of users. It is also possible to conduct the hybrid parallelization by the intra-node OpenMP parallelization and the inter-node MPI parallelization in supercomputer systems. Each parallelization functions were explained together with some application results obtained using a workstation and a supercomputer system, K computer at RIKEN.

To evaluate dose response of VIP polymer gels, the transverse relaxation rate R2 of the dosimeters measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a function of linear energy transfer (LET), rather than penetration depth, as is usually done in previous reports. LET is evaluated by use of the particle transport simulation code PHITS. Our results reveal that the dose response decreases with increasing dose-averaged LET and that the response-LET relation also varies with incident carbon beam energy. The latter can be explained by taking into account the contribution from fragmentation products. Furthermore, as an application of the evaluated response-LET relation, we compare the measured and simulated R2 distribution in a VIP gel formed by heterogeneous irradiation and obtain agreement in overall distribution and range within an accuracy of 5% and 1-2 mm, respectively.

We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as and scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Using unpolarized and polarized elastic neutron scattering we show that the two transitions are due to the existence of frustrated minority spins in this compound. Upon cooling, at the spins on the 111 kagom planes order ferromagnetically in the plane and antiferromagnetically between the planes (phase I), leaving the spins on the 111 triangular planes that separate the kagom planes frustrated and disordered. At the lower , the triangular spins also order in the 111 plane (phase II). We also present a scenario involving exchange interactions that qualitatively explains the origin of the two purely magnetic phase transitions.

A new program was started out to create a new medical scientific field, which is consisting of radiation oncology and nuclear medicine, utilizing the advanced accelerator and ion beam technology. An in-air micro-PIXE analyzer system, which is among the most important technical basis of the program, was upgraded to improve accuracy of elemental mapping for samples having thickness variation in a scope of microbeam scanning. In the program, on the other hand, in order to approach important bio-medical problems on cancer, intracellular dynamics of the trace elements according to mechanism of development of diseases were studied using this system. This paper outlines this program and shows the system upgraded, and results of preliminary studied about the problems.
