composed of two almost isolated subsystems A and B, which are described as an
triangular Heisenberg-like antiferromagnet and a frustrated honeycomb Ising-like antiferromagnet, respectively. It was found that the excitation spectra of both subsystems are well separated and independent of each other. The excitation spectrum of subsystem A is composed of two single-magnon branches with roton-like minima at the M point and a clearly structured intense continuum, as similarly observed in Ba
CoSb
O
, which is strongly indicative of spinon excitations. Dispersion curves for subsystem B can be described by linear spin wave theory within the third-neighbor exchange interaction.

Recent studies have revealed that topologically invariant states, such as edge states in topological insulators, can emerge not only in a fermionic electron system but also in a bosonic system, enabling nondissipative propagation of quasiparticles. Here we report the topologically nontrivial triplon bands measured by inelastic neutron scattering on the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized antiferromagnet BaCuSi
O
Cl
. The excitation spectrum exhibits two triplon bands that are clearly separated by a band gap due to a small alternation in interdimer exchange interaction, consistent with a refined crystal structure. By analytically modeling the triplon dispersion, we show that Ba
CuSi
O
Cl
is the first bosonic realization of the coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, where the presence of topologically protected edge states is prompted by a bipartite nature of the lattice.

We have successfully observed the XMCD signals for all the constituent elements. The Mn L
XAS and XMCD spectra are reproduced by spectral simulations based on density-functional theory, indicating the itinerant character of the Mn 3
states. On the other hand, the V 3
electrons are rather localized since the ionic model can qualitatively explain the V L
XAS and XMCD spectra. This picture is consistent with local
excitations revealed by the V L
RIXS.

JAEA and RWMC concluded the letter of cooperation agreement on the research and development of radioactive waste disposal in April, 2005, and have been carrying out the collaboration work described above based on the agreement. JAEA have been carrying out the Horonobe URL Project which is intended for a sedimentary rock in the Horonobe town, Hokkaido, since 2001. In the project, geoscientific research and research and development on geological disposal technology are being promoted. Meanwhile, the government (the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) has been promoting construction of equipments for the full-scale demonstration of engineered barrier system and operation technology for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal since 2008, to enhance public's understanding to the geological disposal of HLW, using underground facility, etc. RWMC received an order of the project in fiscal year 2010 continuing since fiscal year 2008. Since topics in this project are included in the Horonobe URL Project, JAEA carried out this project as collaboration work continuing in FY 2008. This report summarizes the results of engineering technology carried out in this collaboration work in fiscal year 2010. In fiscal year 2010, part of the equipments for emplacement of buffer material was produced and a house for the equipments and apparatus was opened in the adjoining land of Public Information House of JAEA Horonobe.

Simple and rapid methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations are required to be established for the near surface disposal of radioactive wastes generated from research facilities at Japan Atomic Energy Agency. In order to establish the methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations of miscellaneous solid wastes generated from research and testing reactors, we collected and analyzed samples from miscellaneous solid wastes generated by the decommissioning of JPDR (Japan Power Demonstration Reactor). In the present paper, we summarized data about the radioactivity concentrations which accumulated by the analysis.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and Radioactive Waste Management Funding and Research Center (RWMC) effect an agreement about research and development of high level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal and carried out research and technological development about geological disposal technology. JAEA has been carried out the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL) Project which is intended for sedimentary rock and the Project includes geoscientific research and geological disposal technology. RWMC carried out an investigation about full-scale demonstration of engineered barrier system (EBS) and operation technology for HLW disposal, under the contract with the Natural Resources and Energy Agency, Ministry of Economy, the Trade and Industry. The investigation aims to obtain the citizens' understanding of the geological disposal. This work includes the full-scale demonstration of operation technology in the Horonobe URL. This joint research is about engineering technology concerned with the work. In 2008 fiscal year (2008/2009), the master plan of the work was made, and a part of the device for transportation of engineered barrier was made, and it has begun the exhibition of full-scale bentonite block and overpack.

Although theoretical calculation predicts the presence of ferromagnetic electron-doped manganites with doping tetravalent cations, the ferromagnetic origin in experiments has been controversial due to the lack of direct experimental evidence. Here, we investigate the ferromagnetism in (La,Ce)MnO thin films by measuring the magnetic circular dichroism in soft X-ray absorption (XMCD). The XMCD measurements clarified that the ferromagnetism is not caused by the presence of Mn
but by self-hole doping for manganese.

of 108 K. With decreasing temperature, the observed ZF-
SR function changed from a Gaussian-type to an exponential-type below 60 K and zero field muon precession was also observed below 45 K. These
SR signals are attributed to the development of the antiferromagnetic ordering in inner CuO
planes with a low carrier concentration. These results seem to indicate clear evidence that antiferromagnetism microscopically coexists with superconductivity in the Hg-1245 superconductor below 60 K.
