The performance of net-current free heliotron plasmas has been developed by findings of innovative operational scenarios in conjunction with an upgrade of the heating power and the pumping/fuelling capability in the Large Helical Device (LHD). Consequently, the operational regime has been extended, in particular, with regard to high density, long pulse length and high beta. Diversified studies in LHD have elucidated the advantages of net-current free heliotron plasmas. In particular, an internal diffusion barrier (IDB) by a combination of efficient pumping of the local island divertor function and core fuelling by pellet injection has realized a super dense core as high as 5$$times$$10$$^{20}$$ m$$^{-3}$$, which stimulates an attractive super dense core reactor. Achievements of a volume averaged beta of 4.5% and a discharge duration of 54 min with a total input energy of 1.6 GJ (490 kW on average) are also highlighted. The progress of LHD experiments in these two years is overviewed by highlighting IDB, high-beta and long pulse.

Suppression of hydrogen absorption to V-4Cr-4Ti alloy by TiO$$_{2}$$/TiC coating

Hirohata, Yuko*; Motojima, Dai*; Hino, Tomoaki*; Sengoku, Seio

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 313-316(1-3), p.172 - 176, 2003/03

Titanium oxide film was coated on entire surface of a V-4Cr-4Ti alloy to reduce hydrogen absorption at low temperature region. The film consisted with a mixture of TiO2 and TiC. The content of TiO$$_{2}$$ was approximately 80%. The hydrogen absorption rate of Ti-oxide coated V-alloy largely decreased with increase of the film thickness. In the case of the film with a thickness of 0.5 micron, the absorption rate was fifty times smaller than that of non-coated V-alloy at the absorption temperature of 573 K.

Structural changes of water in polyacrylamide hydrogels

Sekine, Yurina; Tojima, Yu*; Fukazawa, Tomoko*; Fukazawa, Hiroshi

no journal, ,

Hydrogels are unique materials that can contain a large amount of water in their three-dimensional polymer chain networks. Because of characteristic properties of water, hydrogels are widely used as biomedical materials. The structure of water is thus an important factor governing the chemical and physical properties of hydrogel materials. In order to investigate the effects of the side groups of polymer on the water structure, we measured the Raman spectra of polyacrylamide and poly-N,N-dimethylacrylamide hydrogels with various water contents. The results indicate that the water structure in the hydrogels depends on the structure of the side groups in the polymer chains.

Structure of water and ice in poly-N,N,-dimethylacrylamide hydrogels investigated by neutron diffraction

Sekine, Yurina; Tojima, Yu*; Fukazawa, Tomoko*; Fukazawa, Hiroshi

no journal, ,

Neutron diffraction patterns of high and low D2O-content poly-N,N,-dimethylacrylamide (PDMAA) hydrogels were measured in temperature range from 10 to 300 K to investigate structure of water in hydrogels. The results show that amorphous, cubic, and hexagonal ices exist in the low D2O-content PDMAA hydrogel at low temperature, whereas only hexagonal ice exists in the high D2O content PDMAA hydrogel.
