Paramagnetic electron-nuclear spin entanglement in HoCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$

We investigated electron-nuclear spin entanglement in the paramagnetic ground state of the Ho-based cubic compound HoCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$. From analyses of magnetization and specific heat data, we determined the cubic crystalline electric field (CEF) parameters, the magnetic exchange constant, and the hyperfine coupling constant between the 4$$f$$ magnetic moment and the $$^{165}$$Ho nuclear spin. Our results show that the $$Gamma_5$$ CEF ground state is split by the hyperfine coupling, with an energy width of 1.3~K at 0~T, and that the true paramagnetic ground state is a quasi-sextet arising primarily from entanglement between the $$f$$-electron effective spin $$S = 1$$ and the $$^{165}$$Ho nuclear spin $$I = 7/2$$. We further demonstrate that, depending on the CEF parameters, the paramagnetic ground state can switch to an electron-nuclear coupled dectet. These findings underscore the importance of accurately identifying the electron-nuclear level scheme for understanding the low-temperature properties of rare-earth compounds containing spin-active nuclei.

Intimate relationship between spin configuration in the triplet pair and superconductivity in UTe$$_2$$

Spin-triplet superconductivity is an intriguing quantum coherent state with both spin and orbital degrees of freedom, which holds significant potential for future applications in quantum technology. However, how the spin of the triplet pairs responds to an external magnetic field remains poorly understood. This is mainly due to the absence of suitable spin-triplet superconductors. Here, we report results of Knight-shift and ac-susceptibility measurements on UTe$$_2$$. We demonstrate that the spin susceptibility, which slightly decreases compared to the normal-state value below the superconducting transition temperature $$T_c$$, is rapidly restored and nearly recovers to the normal-state values around 5 T, well below the SC upper critical field $$H_{c2}$$ when the magnetic field is applied along the $$c$$ axis.

強磁場における量子限界状態では、電子相関や電子格子相互作用に由来する新奇な電子状態が提案されている。本研究では、7Tという比較的低磁場で量子限界に達すると考えられているLaRhIn$$_{5}$$及び関連物質La$$T$$In$$_{5}$$ (T:遷移金属)を対象とし、強磁場での超音波測定を行った。音響ドハース振動から、先行研究と同様のLaRhIn$$_{5}$$の小さなフェルミ面を観測し、T=CoおよびIrでも量子振動がみられこれまで観測されていなかった100T以下の小さなフェルミ面の存在を明らかにした。遷移金属の$$d$$電子が小さなフェルミ面への寄与を示唆する結果であった。

In this study, we achieved pH control (up to 7) of phosphate-based geopolymer hardened bodies by reacting metakaolinite with a mixed aqueous solution of phosphoric acid and a soluble phosphate salt. This pH control was achieved by adjusting the total amount of phosphate ions and varying the molar ratio of phosphoric acid to phosphate salt. The hardened body with a neutral pH of 6.0 displayed mechanical and spectroscopic characteristics considerably similar to those of conventional phosphoric acid geopolymer hardened bodies with a pH below 3. To evaluate its potential application as a radioactive waste solidifier, a Sr-doped hardened body with a neutral pH (using an SrCl$$_{2}$$ aqueous solution as a simulant of $$^{90}$$Sr) was subjected to static leaching testing. The Sr-doped hardened body demonstrated high resistance to Sr leaching. Sr K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy of the Sr-doped hardened body revealed that its high Sr confinement capability was primarily due to inner-sphere complexation of Sr with the phosphate groups bridging metakaolinite particles.

本研究では、U(VI)からU(V)およびU(IV)への還元反応において、磁鉄鉱のstoichiometry(0 $$leqq$$ R = Fe(II)/Fe(III) $$leqq$$ 0.5)がUの酸化還元反応に与える影響を明らかにした。磁鉄鉱のRは、構造中のFe(II)の酸化やプロトン/リガンドにより促進される溶解により容易に変化することが知られているが、これまでの研究ではU(V)の生成反応に関するRの影響は評価されていなかった。本研究では、異なるRを持つ磁鉄鉱上におけるUの電子状態を調べるため、U L$$_{III}$$端HERFD-XANES分光法を用い、磁鉄鉱上のU(V)による特異的なピーク分裂を観察した。また、異なる条件下で行った吸着実験の結果、U(V)種が広範な条件下で高い安定性を示すことを示し、10日間の反応時間を経た後でも磁鉄鉱上で安定に存在していることが示された。最も重要な知見として、pHと酸化還元条件に依存して存在量が変化する、磁鉄鉱構造中のFe(II)がU(V)の安定化に重要な役割を果たしていることが明らかになった。

UTe$$_2$$における$$a$$軸方向の容易軸メタ磁性クロスオーバーが超伝導に及ぼす影響を、交流磁化率、磁化、および磁気熱量効果の測定によって調べた。高品質な単結晶試料において、5.6Tで超伝導状態内におけるメタ磁性に駆動された磁場誘起相転移を確認した。この相転移により高磁場超伝導状態が形成され、上部臨界磁場は12Tまで大幅に増大する。転移点でのエントロピーの急激な増加は秩序変数の自己再構成を示唆しており、多成分超伝導状態が外部摂動に適応するメカニズムを示している。

Intrinsic low-temperature magnetic properties on ultraclean UTe$$_2$$ with $$T_c$$ = 2.1 K revealed by $$^{125}$$Te NMR

To investigate the intrinsic magnetic properties of UTe$$_2$$, we performed $$^{125}$$Te-NMR measurements on the ultra-clean single-crystalline UTe$$_2$$ with superconducting transition temperature $$T_c$$ = 2.1 K and compared the results with those of the $$T_c$$ = 1.6 K sample. The broadening of the linewidth of the NMR spectrum in the a-axis magnetic field and the low-temperature magnetic fluctuations observed in the 1.6 K sample are suppressed in the ultra-clean sample, indicating that such magnetic properties originate from a tiny amount of U deficiency. The present results suggest that the magnetic properties in UTe$$_2$$ are sensitive to the U deficiency. We also observed a peculiar angular dependence of the NMR quantities due to large magnetic anisotropy with the a-axis as the magnetic easy axis.

Interpretation of vertical migration and enrichment processes of rare earth elements (REEs) in ion-adsorption-type mineralization in Japan based on REE speciation analyses

Typical vertical profiles of ion-adsorption type rare earth element deposits (REE-IADs) discovered in the central Japan were studied by various speciation analyses including X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy combined with transmission electron microscope (TEM) and adsorption/desorption experiments. The results revealed that REE speciation, migration and enrichment in the weathered granite is largely controlled by soil pH which control the variable charges of kaolinite as the REE host phase. The distribution coefficient Kd, together with the soil pH, increases as the depth increase, resulting in (i) REE dissolution and migration in upper layers near the surface acidic environment where hydroxyls of kaolinite basal surfaces and edges are deprotonated to a lesser degree and (ii) REE accumulation in relatively high pH environment below the surface where hydroxyls of kaolinite basal surfaces and edges deprotonated to a larger degree to produce variable charges as adsorption sites for REEs. The increase of soil pH above 6 in deeper layers promotes inner-sphere complexation of REEs. The inner-sphere complexation inhibits the ion-exchange extraction of REEs, but the inner-sphere complexes can be still extracted by lowering the pH, which suggests the adsorption of inner- and outer-sphere complexes is reversible. This fact is important both from (i) understanding of vertical profile of REE with variation of pH and (ii) effective recovery of REE from weathered granite at all the depths in the enriched layer.

Clear reduction in spin susceptibility and superconducting spin rotation for $$H||a$$ in the early-stage sample of spin-triplet superconductor UTe$$_2$$

We report the re-measurement of the $$a$$-axis spin susceptibility component in an early-stage sample of the spin-triplet superconductor UTe$$_2$$ with the transition temperature of $$T_{rm SC}$$ = 1.6 K. Using Knight-shift measurements along the $$b$$ axis and at a 10-degree tilt from the $$b$$ axis towards the $$a$$ axis, we accurately determined the $$a$$-axis component without directly measuring the $$a$$-axis Knight shift. The experiment reveals that the previously reported absence of the reduction in Knight shift is attributed to the missing of signal from the superconducting region and to the detection of residual signals from the non-superconducting region instead.

本研究では生物性マンガン酸化物を用いて人形峠坑水からのラジウム除去実験を行った。その結果、7.6mgの生物性マンガン酸化物を用いて3L坑水中から98%以上の$$^{226}$$Raを除去することが出来た。これは固液分配係数に換算すると10$$^{7.4}$$ mL/gという非常に高い値となり、生物性マンガン酸化物が実際の坑水処理に有効であることを示している。

超伝導体UTe$$_2$$の常伝導状態を$$b$$軸磁場に対するエントロピー解析によって調べた。メタ磁性揺らぎ(空間一様、$$Q=0$$)による磁場によるエントロピーの強い増加が観測された。この磁場依存性は遍歴メタ磁性の量子臨界性に関するHertz-Millis-Moriya理論によってよく記述される。特に、量子臨界領域の下界は超伝導転移温度$$T_c(B)$$の最小値の位置とよく一致する。この結果は、$$Q=0$$の揺らぎが超伝導を強めることを示唆している。

The unique control mechanisms of the plastic deformation of two-phase extruded alloy composed of Mg and long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase were clarified by comparison with those of other Mg solid-solution alloys, focusing on the question of why do the Mg/LPSO two-phase alloys exhibit both large elongation and high strength? The stress-strain curves for each grain in the alloys could be imaginary estimated using neutron diffraction analysis during the tensile test. The results demonstrate that the deformation behaviors of the worked and recrystallized grains are significantly different in all the Mg-extruded alloys owing to the strong plastic anisotropy in Mg with hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure. Therefore, the deformation behavior is controlled by a composite-like deformation mechanism, even in single-phase Mg solid-solution alloys.

Longitudinal spin fluctuations driving field-reinforced superconductivity in UTe$$_2$$

Our measurements of $$^{125}$$Te NMR relaxations reveal an enhancement of electronic spin fluctuations above $$mu_0H^*sim15$$~T, leading to their divergence in the vicinity of the metamagnetic transition at $$mu_0H_mapprox35$$~T, below which field-reinforced superconductivity appears when a magnetic field ($$H$$) is applied along the crystallographic $$b$$ axis. The NMR data evidence that these fluctuations are dominantly longitudinal, providing a key to understanding the peculiar superconducting phase diagram in $$H|b$$, where such fluctuations enhance the pairing interactions.

$$b$$-軸磁場下で$$a$$-軸方向の電流を用いて測定することで、スピン3重項超伝導体UTe$$_2$$におけるボルテックスダイナミクスを研究した。驚くべきことに、超伝導状態の深部で、島状の臨界電流の低い領域を発見した。この現象は、ボルテックスのピンニングが弱まった結果と考えられる。特筆すべきは、この領域が最近提案された中間磁場の超伝導相と一致していることである。我々は、中間磁場超伝導状態において非特異的なボルテックスが存在する可能性を検討した。この中間状態では、複数の超伝導成分が混合するためボルテックスの中心部で超伝導の秩序パラメータが完全に消えない可能性があり、それがピニングが弱まる原因になっている可能性がある。

Observation of field-induced single-ion magnetic anisotropy in a multiorbital Kondo alloy (Lu,Yb)Rh$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$

We demonstrate field-induced single-ion magnetic anisotropy resulting from the multiorbital Kondo effect on diluted ytterbium alloy (Lu$$_{1-x}$$Yb$$_x$$)Rh$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$. Single-ion anisotropic metamagnetic behavior is revealed in low-temperature regions where the local Fermi-liquid state is formed. Specific heat, low-field magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity indicate reproduction of the ground-state properties by the SU($$N$$ = 8) Kondo model with a relatively large $$c$$-$$f$$ hybridization of $$T_{rm K}$$ = 60.9 K. Dynamical susceptibility measurements on YbRh$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ support realizing multiorbital Kondo ground state in (Lu$$_{1-x}$$Yb$$_x$$)Rh$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy becomes evident above $$sim$$5 T, which is lower than the isotropic Kondo crossover field of 22.7 T, verifying blurred low-lying crystal field states through the multiorbital Kondo effect.

Superconducting (SC) state has spin and orbital degrees of freedom, and spin-triplet superconductivity shows multiple SC phases because of the presence of these degrees of freedom. However, the observation of spin-direction rotation occurring inside the SC state (SC spin rotation) has hardly been reported. Uranium ditelluride, a recently found topological superconductor, exhibits various SC phases under pressure: SC state at ambient pressure (SC1), high-temperature SC state above 0.5 gigapascal (SC2), and low-temperature SC state above 0.5 gigapascal (SC3). We performed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and ac susceptibility measurements on a single-crystal uranium ditelluride. The b axis spin susceptibility remains unchanged in SC2, unlike in SC1, and decreases below the SC2-SC3 transition with spin modulation. These unique properties in SC3 arise from the coexistence of two SC order parameters. Our NMR results confirm spin-triplet superconductivity with SC spin parallel to b axis in SC2 and unveil the remaining of spin degrees of freedom in SC uranium ditelluride.

硬X線およびソフトX線光電子分光法、およびバンド構造計算を用いて、Mg$$_{99.2}$$Zn$$_{0.2}$$Y$$_{0.6}$$合金の電子構造を調査し、この材料の相安定性のメカニズムを調べた。Mg$$_{99.2}$$Zn$$_{0.2}$$Y$$_{0.6}$$合金の電子構造は、フェルミエネルギー近傍に疑ギャップを持つ半金属的な電子構造を示した。Mg$$_{99.2}$$Zn$$_{0.2}$$Y$$_{0.6}$$合金の観察された電子構造は、疑ギャップ構造が相安定性に寄与していることを示唆する。

To investigate the static and dynamic magnetic properties on the uranium-based superconductor UTe$$_2$$, we measured the NMR Knight shift $$K$$ and the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate 1/$$T_1$$ in $$H//a$$ by $$^{125}$$Te-NMR on a $$^{125}$$Te-enriched single-crystal sample. 1/$$T_1$$$$T$$ in $$H//a$$ is much smaller than 1/$$T_1$$$$T$$ in $$H //b$$ and c, and magnetic fluctuations along each axis are derived from the 1/$$T_1$$$$T$$ measured in $$H$$ parallel to all three crystalline axes. The magnetic fluctuations are almost identical at two Te sites and isotropic at high temperatures, but become anisotropic below 40 K, where heavy-fermion state is formed.

Spin susceptibility in the superconducting (SC) state was measured in the higher-quality sample of uranium-based superconductor UTe$$_2$$ by using Knight-shift measurements for a magnetic field $$H$$ along all three crystalline axes. In the higher-quality sample, the SC transition temperature $$T_c$$ is about 2.1 K, and the residual electronic term in the specific heat is almost zero. The NMR linewidth becomes narrower and is almost half of that in the previous sample with $$T_csim$$1.6 K when $$H//a$$ and $$c$$. Although the Knight-shift behavior was not so different from the previous results for $$H//b$$, and $$c$$, a large reduction in Knight shift along the $$a$$ axis was observed, in contrast with the previous $$a$$-axis Knight shift result. We discuss the origin of the difference between the previous and present results, and the possible SC state derived from the present results.

$$T_{rm c}$$=2.1Kのウラン2テルル化物単結晶における超伝導相図を磁気困難軸である結晶$$b$$軸方向に磁場をかけて調べた。電気抵抗と交流帯磁率を同時に測定した結果、低磁場超伝導(LFSC)相と高磁場超伝導(HFSC)相が、対照的な磁場-角度依存性をもつことがわかった。結晶の純良性が上がったことにより、LFSC相の上部臨界磁場は上昇したものの、HFSC相が現れる特徴磁場$$H^{ast}$$は、単結晶の純良性に関わらず、15Tと一定であることがわかった。また、$$H^{ast}$$近傍のLFSC相内に、弱い渦糸ピン留め力で特徴づけられる中間超伝導相を示唆する新たな相線の形跡を捉えた。
