The combination of the existing position-sensitive photomultiplier and the $$^{3}$$He main detector with focusing devices, and the newly installed front detectors in SANS-J at JRR-3 covers small-angle neutron scattering signals in the range of the magnitude of the scattering vector Q from 0.002 to 6 nm-1 gaplessly with three standard device layouts. The installation of the front detector and a graphical user interface system largely improved the usability of SANS-J.

We investigated the iron-based ladder compounds (Ba, Cs)Fe$$_{2}$$Se$$_{3}$$, whose parent compounds, BaFe$$_{2}$$Se$$_{3}$$ and CsFe$$_{2}$$Se$$_{3}$$, have different space groups, formal valences of Fe and magnetic structures. Electrical resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction and powder neutron diffraction measurements were conducted to obtain the temperature and composition phase diagram of this system. Block magnetism seen in BaFe$$_{2}$$Se$$_{3}$$ is drastically suppressed with Cs doping. In contrast, stripe magnetism observed in CsFe$$_{2}$$Se$$_{3}$$ more resilient to Ba doping. Novel magnetic structure appears in intermediate compositions, which is similar to the stripe magnetism of CsFe$$_{2}$$Se$$_{3}$$ but with different inter-ladder spin configuration. Intermediate compounds show insulating behavior, nevertheless finite T-linear contribution in specific heat was obtained at low temperature.

Magnetism in the insulating BaFe$$_{2}$$Se$$_{3}$$ was examined through susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity and neutron diffraction measurements. After formation of a short-range magnetic correlation, a long-range ordering was observed below $$T_{rm N}$$ $$sim$$ 255 K. The transition is obscured by bulk properties. Magnetic moments are arranged to form a Fe$$_{4}$$ ferromagnetic unit, and each Fe$$_{4}$$ stacks antiferromagnetically. This block magnetism is of the third type among magnetic structures of ferrous materials. The magnetic ordering drives unusually large distortion via magnetoelastic coupling.

Selective vibrational excitation in the resonant Auger decay following core-to-$$pi^*$$ transitions in N$$_2$$O

In N$$_2$$O a detailed study of the vibrational distribution of the state reached after decay of core-to-$$pi^*$$ excitation of N terminal, N central and O 1s core levels is reported. We observe a change in the relative intensity of bending versus stretching modes while scanning the photon energy across all three resonances. While this effect is known to be due to the Renner-Teller splitting in the core-excited states, we could derive that the antisymmetric stretching is excited mainly in the decay of the N terminal 1s-to-$$pi^*$$ excitation. An explanation for such selectivity is provided in terms of interplay of vibrational structure on potential energy surfaces of different electronic states involved in the process.

Therapy of tumor using radiation, especially heavy particle, is one of the effective treatment for an aged person and a malignant solid tumor. In order to spread the radiation therapy, downsizing of accelerator is necessary for reduction of its vast costs of construction and running. The quality of high temperature superconductors is improving rapidly in recent years, which may lead to realization of the downsizing. This presentation describes a conceptual design of the superconducting cyclotron and its advantage comparing to other type of accelerators.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.
