In this paper, a new method is proposed for the nonlinear sloshing condition of a cylindrical tank, which can evaluate the vertical load acting on the roof and the horizontal load acting on the sidewall. This method is a combination of simplified equations for the liquid surface level and velocity proposed in the past study and the new pressure model modified from the existing model. A long calculation time as CFD analysis is not needed, because this method is consisted of simplified equations. The validity of this method was confirmed by comparing them with the CFD and the test. And future issues on the improvement of this method were clarified from the result.

Thermally altered subsurface material of asteroid (162173) Ryugu

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

We have developed ${it spatiotemporal}$ measurement and analysis techniques in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To begin with, time-division depth profiles of gate stacked film interfaces have been achieved by NAP-HARPES (Near Ambient Pressure Hard X-ray Angle-Resolved Photo Emission Spectroscopy) data. We then have promoted our methods to quickly perform peak fittings and depth profiling from time-division ARPES data, which enables us to realize 4D-XPS analysis. It is found that the traditional maximum entropy method (MEM) combined with Jackknife averaging of sparse modeling in NAP-HARPES data is effective to perform dynamic measurement of depth profiles with high precision.

The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2 sample return mission, is believed to be a primitive carbonaceous object. The Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2 acquired reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micron was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

A new formulation of the cross-section adjustment methodology with the dimensionality reduction technique has been derived. This new formulation is proposed as the dimension reduced cross-section adjustment method (DRCA). Since the derivation of DRCA is based on the minimum variance unbiased estimation (MVUE), an assumption of normal distribution is not required. The result of DRCA depends on a user-defined matrix that determines the dimension reduced feature subspace. We have examine three variations of DRCA, namely DRCA1, DRCA2, and DRCA3. Mathematical investigation and numerical verification have revealed that DRCA2 is equivalent to the currently widely used cross-section adjustment method. Moreover, DRCA3 is found to be identical to the cross-section adjustment method based on MVUE, which has been proposed in the previous study.

On the basis of the minimum variance approach, the unified formulation for three types of the cross-section adjustment methods has been derived in a straightforward way without assuming the normal distribution. These methods are intended to minimize the variances of the predicted target core parameters, the adjusted cross-section set, and the calculated integral experimental values. The first and the second methods are found to be slightly different from the extended and the conventional cross-section adjustment methods based on the Bayesian approach with the normal distribution assumption, respectively. However, they become equivalent in some cases and results. The third method is a new method, which is necessary from the viewpoint of the symmetry of the formulation. The derivation procedure proposed in the present paper is potentially applicable to developing more sophisticated cross-section adjustment methods because of the less assumptions on the probability density function.

To understand the subsurface biosphere, borehole investigation was conducted for 300-m deep granitic rocks at the Mizunami underground research laboratory, Japan. The initial biomass was the highest with the flourish of aerobic H$$_{2}$$-oxidizing Hydrogenophaga spp., whereas an uncultivated lineage of the phylum Nitrospirae became predominant after three years with decreasing biomass. The common occurrence of many species of Nitrospirae and Chlorobi phyla at the geographically distinct sites and the exclusive detection of their phylogenetically related environmental sequences from deep groundwaters and terrestrial hot springs, suggest that these bacteria are indigenous and potentially adapted to the deep terrestrial subsurface.

A system is developed for the real-time position detection of single-ions which hits a target with spatial accuracy about 1 $$mu$$m. The system combines highly luminescent, sensitive, scintillators with a high sensitivity luminescence detection system. The real-time detection system contains a Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$:Eu scintillator, Eu implanting into $$alpha$$-Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$. A single-crystal scintillator has been selected since position resolution of emission for powdery scintillator is limited by a grain size, several micrometers for ZnS for example. When the material is irradiated with an electron or ion beam, the Eu is activated and strong luminescence occurs. The detection system includes an image intensifier tube and an electron multiplier CCD camera. The results show that our system can be sufficiently sensitive to detect the hit of a single-ion in real time through simple improvement in emission intensity of the scintillator.

Under Broader Approach (BA) Agreement between EURATOM and Japan, IFMIF/EVEDA (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility/Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities) has been performed since the middle of 2007. The present EVEDA phase aims at producing a detailed, compete and fully integrated engineering design of IFMIF. The deivery of the Intermediate IFMIF engineering design report is foreseen mid-2013. The main function of the IFMIF is to provide the materials database for the design and licensing of DEMO reactor and further fusion rectors from the material sets irradiated in High Flux Test Modules (HFTM, Startup Monitoring Module), Medium Flux Test Modules (Creep Fatigues Test Module, Tritium Release Test Module, Liquid Breeder Validation Module) and Low Flux Test Modules of IFMIF. This paper is summarizing the current progress of the engineering design of the test modules within the IFMIF/EVEDA project.

This study reconsiders rock's mechanical and hydrological parameters based on additional ${it in-situ}$ data given in this year, and conducts the mechanical-hydrological analysis using the Micromechanics-Based Continuum (MBC) model which can consider the behavior of fracture. The acquired analysis results are compared with actual test data such as drift convergence and hydraulic pressure around the drift. Then, following knowledge is obtained.
