JENDL-5 benchmark test for shielding applications

Konno, Chikara; Ota, Masayuki*; Kwon, Saerom*; Onishi, Seiki*; Yamano, Naoki*; Sato, Satoshi*

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 60(9), p.1046 - 1069, 2023/09

 Times Cited Count:7 Percentile:96.69(Nuclear Science & Technology)

JENDL-5 was validated from a viewpoint of shielding applications under the Shielding Integral Test Working Group of the JENDL Committee. The following benchmark experiments were selected: JAEA/FNS in-situ experiments, Osaka Univ./OKTAVIAN TOF experiments, ORNL/JASPER sodium experiments, NIST iron experiment and QST/TIARA experiments. These experiments were analyzed with MCNP and nuclear data libraries (JENDL-5, JENDL-4.0 or JENDL-4.0/HE, ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3). The analysis results demonstrate that JENDL-5 is comparable to or better than JENDL-4.0 or JENDL-4.0/HE, ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3.

JAEA-Conf 2016-004, p.41 - 46, 2016/09

Neutron- and proton-induced cross-section data are required in a wide energy range beyond 20 MeV, for the design of accelerator applications. New evaluations are performed with recent knowledge in the optical and pre-equilibrium model calculations. We also evaluated cross-sections for p+$$^{6,7}$$Li and p+$$^{9}$$Be which have been highly requested from a medical field. The present high-energy nuclear data library, JENDL-4.0/HE, includes evaluated cross-sections for incident neutrons and protons up to 200 MeV (for about 130 nuclei). We overview substantial features of the library, i.e., (1) systematic evaluation with CCONE code, (2) challenges for evaluations of light nuclei and (3) inheritance of JENDL-4.0 and JENDL/HE-2007. In this talk, we also focus on the results of benchmark calculation for neutronics to show performance of the present library.

Public opinion survey on the relationship between society and nuclear energy

Shinoda, Yoshihiko; Yamano, Naoki*; Torii, Hiroyuki*

Nihon Genshiryoku Gakkai Wabun Rombunshi, 7(4), p.350 - 369, 2008/12

I conducted a questionnaire survey of 2500 adults (collect rate 22.0%, 551 replies) who live in Tokyo metropolitan area. The purpose of this survey asking opinion about a relation between attitude toward nuclear technology utilization and social awareness is to find out their request, exception and concern about nuclear technology utilization. The survey reveals that the differences of attitudes towards nuclear technology utilization can be explained in terms of differences of general views on society such as directionality of social progress. Then, it is necessary to argue with citizens about the strategy on nuclear technology utilization from the viewpoint of directionality of the future society. The social decision-making process on nuclear technology utilization has to be renovated through the dialogue among citizens as the partner taking on the achievement and contribution toward directionality of the future society.

Integrated nuclear data utilization system for innovative reactors; Nuclear data processing and utilization system

Yamano, Naoki*; Katakura, Junichi; Kato, Kiyoshi*; Igashira, Masayuki*

Proceedings of International Conference on Nuclear Data for Science and Technology (ND 2007), Vol.2, p.825 - 828, 2008/05

A nuclear data processing and utilization system has been developed as a modular code system of the integrated nuclear data utilization system for innovative nuclear energy system. The system is able to handle evaluated nuclear data in ENDF-6 format to generate point-wise and group-wise cross sections in several formats, and has a capability to perform criticality and shielding benchmarks. An overview of the integrated nuclear data utilization system and the scheme of cross-section generation and benchmark procedure in the system have been described as well as future development plan based on the system.

This technical note summarizes research activities on nuclear data carried out by Japanese Nuclear Data Committee (JNDC) during the fiscal years of 2003 and 2004. During this period, the nuclear data files for special purposes (JENDL-HE-2004 and JENDL-PD-2004) were released. Other activities are described: analysis of post nuclear fuel irradiation experiments, nuclear chart and nuclear data evaluation for astrophysics.

AIP Conference Proceedings 769, p.326 - 331, 2005/05

An overview is presented of recent nuclear data evaluations performed for the JENDL high-energy (JENDL-HE) file, in which neutron and proton cross sections for energies up to 3 GeV are included for the whole 132 nuclides. The current version of the JENDL-HE file consists of neutron total cross sections, nucleon elastic scattering cross sections and angular distributions, nonelastic cross sections, production cross sections and double-differential cross sections of secondary light particles (${it n, p, d, t,}$ $$^{3}$$He, $$alpha$$, and $$pi$$) and $$gamma$$-rays, isotope production cross sections, and fission cross sections in the ENDF6 format. The present evaluations are performed on the basis of experimental data and theoretical model calculations. For the cross section calculations, we have constructed a hybrid calculation code system with some available nuclear model codes and systematics-based codes, such as ECIS96, OPTMAN, GNASH, JQMD, JAM, TOTELA, FISCAL, and so on. The evaluated cross sections are compared with available experimental data and the other evaluations. Future plans of our JENDL-HE project are discussed along with prospective needs of high-energy cross section data.

The third revision of JENDL-3 (JENDL-3.3) was released in May 2002. The library is useful for many applications. For users' convenience, we have produced two JENDL-3.3 based libraries FSXLIB-J33 and MATXSLIB-J33 for transport calculation codes such as MCNP and ANISN. These two libraries are available on request.

Evaluation for JENDL-3.3 has been performed by considering the accumulated feedback information and various benchmark tests of the previous library JENDL-3.2. The major problems of the JENDL-3.2 data were solved by the new library: overestimation of criticality values for thermal fission reactors was improved by the modifications of fission cross sections and fission neutron spectra for $$^{235}$$U; incorrect energy distributions of secondary neutrons from important heavy nuclides were replaced with statistical model calculations; the inconsistency between elemental and isotopic evaluations was removed for medium-heavy nuclides. Moreover, covariance data were provided for 20 nuclides. The reliability of JENDL-3.3 was investigated by the benchmark analyses on reactor and shielding performances. The results of the analyses indicate that JENDL-3.3 predicts various reactor and shielding characteristics better than JENDL-3.2.
