Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:8.43(Physics, Applied)Direct energy conversion has been investigated using Ni/SiC Schottky junctions with the irradiation of monochromatized synchrotron X-rays simulating the gamma rays of Np (30 keV) and
Am (60 keV). From current-voltage measurements, electrical energies were obtained for both kinds of gamma rays. The energy conversion efficiencies were found to reach up to
1.6%, which is comparable to those of a few other semiconducting systems reported thus far. This result shows a possibility of energy recovery from nuclear wastes using the present system, judging from the radiation tolerant nature of SiC. Also, we found different conversion efficiencies between the two samples. This could be understandable from hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements, suggesting the formation of Ni-Si compounds at the interface in the sample with a poor performance. Hence, such combined measurements are useful to provide information that cannot be obtained by electrical measurements alone.

However, there has been very limited knowledge available indicating the irradiation tolerance of spin thermoelectric devices. Through analysis using a heavy ion-beam accelerator and the hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) measurements, we show that a prototypical STE device based on YFe
O
/Pt heterostructures has tolerance to irradiation of high-energy heavy-ion beams. We used 320 MeV gold ion beams modeling cumulative damages due to fission products emitted from the surface of spent nuclear fuels. By varying the dose level, we confirmed that the thermoelectric and magnetic properties of the SSE elements are not affected by the ion-irradiation dose up to
ions/cm
fluence and that the SSE signal is extinguished around
ions/cm
, in which the ion tracks almost fully cover the sample surface. In addition, the HAXPES measurements were performed to understand the effects at the interface of Y
Fe
O
/Pt. The HAXPES measurements suggest that the chemical reaction that diminishes the SSE signals is enhanced with the increase of the irradiation dose. We share the current understandings of the damage analysis in Y
Fe
O
/Pt for developing better STE devices applicable to harsh environmental usages.

in order to develop an effective technique to control the frustration of charges in strongly correlated electron systems. The electro-chemical doping of Li
into YbFe
O
was examined on the cell type sample similar to the Li-ion secondary battery cell. Systematic change of the lattice constant, Fe-Fe and Fe-Yb distance were observed with Li doping. Maximum value of the doping was over 300 mAh/g. An EXAFS experiment indicated that Li positioned between Yb octahedron layer (U-layer) and Fe-bipyramidal layer (W-layer). However, detailed change of iron valence state of YbFe
O
was not clearly observed because of the superimpose of the signal from iron metal nano particles in XANES observation. The results indicate that the electrochemical method might be one of the potential technique to control the frustration of charges in YbFe
O
.

Exploring novel caloric materials is challenging but critically important in developing future technologies. Here we discovered that the quadruple perovskite structure ferrimagnet BiCuCr
O
shows a large multicaloric effect at the first-order charge transition occurred around 190 K. Large latent heat and the corresponding isothermal entropy changes 28.2 J K
kg
can be fully utilized by applying both magnetic fields (magnetocaloric effect) and pressure (barocaloric effect). Adiabatic temperature changes reach 3.9 K for the 50 kOe magnetic field and 4.8 K for the 4.9 kbar pressure, and thus highly efficient thermal controls are achieved by multiple ways.

: rare earth). Aging and memory effects of resistivity were found in the electric impedance response. We performed a numerical analysis with equivalent electric circuits that have a logarithmic Gaussian distribution of resistance and capacitance. The distribution parameters well explained the glassy nature of the electric and dielectric properties between 100 and 200 K and the distribution variations of charge- and magnetic-ordered domains underlying the glass nature.

(R: Y and Lu) was investigated by energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy, combined with conventional transmission electron microscopy. The presence of three-dimensional to two-dimensional charge ordering transition were observed in both RFe

on heating. Furthermore, real-space images obtained with the energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy revealed that YRFe
O
has less anisotropic nanometer-scale charge-ordered domains than LuRFe
O
. These findings in RFe
O
indicate the importance of the interchange interactions between Fe-O bilayers in addition to those within bilayers in the structural phase transitions associated with charge ordering in this system.

High energy X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) measurements were carried out for the Spin Seebeck system Pt/YFe
O
(YIG). This system was found to show anomalous Hall effect, possible due to the formation of intermetallic compounds between Fe
and Pt. To reveal this possibility, we have measured the Fe 1s photoelectron peaks by using HAXPES. It was found that the Fe ions consist of Fe
in YIG and metallic Fe. The formation of the metallic state is consistent with the proposed origin of the anomalous Hall effect. Other spectra such as Pt 4f will be presented at the conference.

. Using the localized Wannier functions obtained from a band calculation, the most stable magnetic state was found to be spiral with the incommensurate structure, consistent with the result from neutron diffraction. The Ni-site Coulomb interaction was not strong (U about 2 eV). The spin value at the Ni site was also not so large about 1.1 mb. These results mean that the hybridization between Ni and S may play an important role. The dynamical spin correlation function was found to in accord with the results from neutron scattering.

-edge suggest that the average valence value of Co ions increases, the interatomic distance of Co-O bonding decreases, and the local distortion of CoO
octahedron increases as Sr is doped in PrCoO
. The interatomic distance of Co-O bonding shrinks more greatly for the larger doping region. No temperature dependent electronic and structural changes were observed from Co
-edge X-ray absorption spectra in the whole thermal range studied (17-300 K). The magnetocaloric effect of Pr
Sr
CoO
indicates the change of magnetic structure at 110 K.

CrO
, GdCrO
, and TmCrO
and show that spin rotation or reorientation plays a key role in this property. The magnetization measurements on all systems show the appearance and disappearance of the reversal are commonly depend on a strength of a Zeeman energy at the rare earth site in analogy with spin rotation in GdCrO
and TmCrO
, denoted at the spin reorientation. Magnetic susceptibility measurements point to either superparamagnetic or single-molecule-magnet-like glassy behavior in all three systems, which is likely linked to a rotation of the R
-Cr
coupling, as seen from magnetocalorimetry (
= La
Pr
, Gd, and Tm). We also present a characteristic magnetization switching by rotating the R
moments with the aid of large Zeeman energies.
