To understand the influence of glass structural change by neutron irradiation and boron isotope composition, glass samples were made from enrichment boric acid reagents and neutron irradiation of those samples was carried out in Pn-2 of KUR. The structural change of glass sample after the irradiation will be estimated in 2020FY. Before neutron irradiation test of glass samples, the Si-O bridging structure difference by boron isotope composition compared by using a Raman spectrometry.

To understand this structural change of a borosilicate glass by a neutron irradiation in detail, the irradiation test was carried out in KUR in 2017FY. The glass structure was estimated by using Raman spectrometry in 2018FY. Comparing with the Raman spectra of glass samples before and after irradiation, it could be observed the change of peak height of Si-O bridging structure by the irradiation.

To select the chemical composition of a glass frit which can increase the waste content, the simulated waste glass samples prepared from a borosilicate glass frit including vanadium (V) were investigated by using Laser Ablation (LA) ICP-AES analysis, Raman spectrometry, and synchrotron XAFS measurement in this study on foundation business of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.

In this study, to understand the structural change of a borosilicate glass by a neutron irradiation in detail, the neutron irradiation test was carried out for 50 min in the Pn-2 of the Kyoto University Research Reactor (KUR). The structural change of glass sample after the irradiation will be estimated in 2018FY. Before the irradiation test, the glass composition was selected to estimate a structural change accurately by Raman spectrometry and 2 kinds of Li free borosilicate glass for the irradiation test samples were prepared.

To investigate the characterization damage of a borosilicate glass by a neutron irradiation, the glass sample after neutron irradiation was estimated by using the Raman spectrophotometry and the synchrotron XAFS measurement. As a result, we confirmed that the Si-O bridge structure of a borosilicate glass and the containing element valence in the glass were changed by the neutron irradiation.

Raman spectroscopic measurements of porewater in bentonite

Nature of porewater in bentonite plays important roles on the mass transport in the compacted bentonite used as a physical and chemical buffer material of the multi-barrier system in the high level radioactive waste manegement Higher activation energies of diffusion in the compacted bentonite than those in the aqueous solution is due probably to change in molecular structure of water in the porewater. The Raman spectroscopy was applied to studying the structure of porewater in bentonite at room temperature. Bentonite (Kunipia F, 98-99wt% of Na-smectite) was mixed with ion-exchanged water by water content of 75, 80, 90, 95 and 98wt% of water or with 0.5M NaCl aqueous solution by 75 and 80wt% of NaCl solution. Intensity maxima of the spectra of ion exchanged water, NaCl solution and their porewater were observed near 3200 to 3250, 3400, 3630cm$$^{-1}$$. These bands can be attributed to water molecules forming stronger hydrogen bond in this manner. Ratio of intensity, 3250cm$$^{-1}$$/3400cm$$^{-1}$$, increased from 0.97 to 1.1 with a decrease in water content of 100wt% (water) to 75wt%. On the other hand, intensity ratio of 3400cm$$^{-1}$$/3250cm$$^{-1}$$ of NaCl aqueous solution, 80wt%and 75wt% were 0.92, 1.2 and 1.3, respectively. Since the Raman scattering near 3250cm$$^{-1}$$ was attributed to water molecule forming the strongest hydrogen bonding in the three bands, those changes in intensity ratio suggests an increase in number of water molecule forming strong hydrogen bond in porewater of the bentonite. The constrained porewater possibly results in the high activation energy of diffusion in the compacted bentonite.

It is expected by bubbling operation of molten glass that glass composition becomes uniform. Air or Ar gas was purged into the molten simulated waste glass, and the drained glass was investigated by Raman spectrophotometry and synchrotron XAFS measurement. As a result, the Si-O bridging structure with a small number of non-bridging oxygen increases by Ar gas purging into the molten glass and also valence of Ce included in the simulated waste glass reduces.
