Numerical study on longitudinal distance effect on failure stress of non-aligned twin cracked pipe

Nguyen, T.-L.*; Lee, M.-W.*; Hasegawa, Kunio; Kim, Y.-J.*

Proceedings of 2018 ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference (PVP 2018), 7 Pages, 2018/07

The effect of longitudinal distance H between non-aligned twin cracks is investigated using finite element damage analysis. It is shown that the failure bending stresses are raised by increasing longitudinal distance H for deep short cracks. On the contrary, shallow long cracks are unaffected by the distance H.

The bond behavior between rebar and concrete under bending moment was investigated by measuring the stress distribution in the two-dimensionally distributed rebars embedded in the reinforced concrete (RC) beam using neutron diffraction. The stress distributions in both of the main rebar and the transverse stirrups embedded in concrete were successfully measured at the fixed measurement configuration without any sample rotations, by suggesting a simple measurement technique on the premise that the transverse restriction from the surrounding concrete to the main rebar is negligible. The bending and shear fracture behavior of the RC beam specimen was predicted by comparing changes in the stress distribution in the rebars measured by neutron diffraction with respect to the applied stress, with the macroscopic deformation measured by strain gauges fixed on the concrete surface. In this study, it was found that the neutron diffraction technique can be a useful technique to evaluate not only the anchorage performance but also the bending behavior of the RC beam.

Piping components in power plants may experience combined bending and torsion moments during operation. There is a lack of guidance for pipe evaluation for pipes with local wall thinning under the combined bending and torsion moments. ASME Code Section XI Working Group is currently developing fully plastic bending pipe evaluation procedures for pressurized piping components containing local wall thinning subjected to combined torsion and bending moments. Using elastic fully plastic finite element analyses, plastic collapse bending moments under torsion were obtained for 114.3 mm to 609.6 mm diameter pipes with various local wall thinning flaw sizes. The objective of this paper is to introduce an equivalent moment, which combines torsion and bending moments by a vector summation, and to establish the applicable range of wall thinning lengths, angles and depths, where the equivalent moments are equal to pure bending moments.

Notch toughness evaluation of diffusion-bonded joint of alumina dispersion-strengthened copper to stainless steel

Tensile strength of the diffusion bonded joint was as large as that of Alumina dispersion-strengthened copper (DS Cu), however, the Charpy absorbed energy of the joint was considerably lower than that of DS Cu. Instrumented Charpy impact test and slow-bend Charpy test of diffusion bonded joints were performed to clarify the degradation of Charpy absorbed energy. Elasto-plastic analyses were also carried out in order to study the deformation behavior of the tensile and V-notched specimens for joints. As the results, the fracture behaviors of the impact and slow-bend tests were almost the same. Elasto-plastic analyses showed that the maximum strain occurred at the DS Cu apart from the interface for tensile specimen, however, the strain concentrated at the DS Cu near the interface for the notched specimen. This strain concentration arose from the mechanical heterogeneity between stainless steel and DS Cu in the bonded zone and attributed to the degradation of the absorbed energy of the joints.

In several institutes, research and development for an accelerator-driven spallation neutron source have been progressed. A beam window of a target will be subjected to proton/neutron irradiation, pressure wave and thermal stresses accompanied by high-energy proton beam injection. To obtain the irradiation data, the SINQ target irradiation program (STIP) at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) has been progressing. JAERI takes part in STIP and shares the PIE work. The STIP specimens are very small so that we developed a new fatigue-testing machine with ceramic piezoelectric actuator. The results showed that the numbers of cycles to failure (Nf) on the irradiated specimens were less than that of unirradiated specimens. Dpa dependence of Nf was not clearly seen in the irradiation conditions. On the other hand, fracture surface varied with irradiation conditions. Specimens irradiated at low temperature fractured in ductile manner. However, interglanular fractured surface was observed for 316F SS irradiated up to 12.5 dpa at 360$$^{circ}$$C.

Study of irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) is an important subject for the plant life assessment and extension of the light water reactors (LWRs). It is necessary that initiation mechanism of IASCC should be made clear under combined effect of irradiation, environment and stress in order to understand IASCC phenomena. Under the existing circumstance, Saturated Temperature Capsule (SATCAP) were fabricated for the irradiation test of IASCC studies in Japan Material Testing Reactor (JMTR). SATCAP is the irradiation rig to irradiate materials in high pressure water of controlled chemistry and temperature simulating Boiling water reactors (BWRs) core environment from the new water feelding system of out-of-pile. This report describes (1) investigation of technical problems for the design and fabrication of SATCAP, (2) the tests results of the problems and (3) fabrication and inspection of SATCAP.

Inelastic analyses of the floor liner subjected to thermal loading due to sodium leakage and combustion were carried out, considering thinning of the liner plate due to molten salt type corrosion. Because the inelastic strain obtained by the analyses stayed below the ductility limit of the material, mechanical integrity, i.e., there exist no through-wall crack on the floor liner, was confirmed. Partial structural model tests were conducted, with a band of local thinning of the liner plate. Displacements were controlled to give specimens much larger strains than those obtained by the inelastic analyses above. No through-wall crack was observed by these tests. Mechanical integrity of the floor liner was confirmed by these results of the inelastic analyses and the partial structural model tests.
